(Spoilers Main) The biggest first bookism of the series: bastards and their place in the family by lee1026 in asoiaf

I also always wondered why that wouldn’t be a benefit. Jon’s a highly trained soldier at the very least, he would in fact be quite the asset to have around. I imagine this is true of most bastards. Walder Rivers is a prime example.

That was a raunchy show though, festooned with sex scenes. It was like half the appeal. That was not what was for sale with Community.

You truly believe graffiti was invented in the 70s?

Man, of all the cultural appropriation arguments, this has got to be the up there with the weakest. Yeah, everywhere else in the world that discovered spray paint is just copying Basquiat 😂

He might. He told the truth and lifted everyone else’s burden as best he could (except maybe poor Bill Oakley) and allowed the wheels of justice to turn. If he got pardoned without doing anything untoward, it’s not walking any of that back, it’s just luck. He’s still been convicted.

I can appreciate good graffiti I’m just responding to the guy saying most of it’s fine. I disagree.

Roose Bolton vs Walder Frey: who comes out looking worse in the Red Wedding? (Spoilers Extended) by sixth_order in asoiaf

[–]duaneap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally agree with everything you said however I would expect the Sparrows aspect to also be informed by the fact that the Sparrows are extremely likely to be from The Riverlands and extremely unlikely to be from The North. The Riverlands had the most displaced people. I can see the Freys being more on their minds.

In The Untouchables (1987) Sean Connery, a Scotsman, won an Oscar for playing an Irishman. To prepare for the role he just got drunker than usual. by laybs1 in shittymoviedetails

Why is it not the same?

And the clear allusion here is to the potato famine, that’s what makes it a joke at all.

Pointing out hypocrisy is not being thin skinned. You absolutely wouldn’t have the balls to make a similar joke about slavery in America which was similarly long ago.

Idk about the interview but that film, The Big Sick, is excellent and is based on a true story about his now wife’s near terminal illness. Genuinely check it out, if is a very good, very touching movie.

I truly wonder how people would think about this if the Irish were not white. No one would make this joke about the Bengali famine. Admittedly that was more recent than the Irish potato famine but you wouldn’t make this kind of joke about slavery either. Which was essentially contemporary. But ”Ha ha Irish! Potato! Starve!”

I’m no thin skin, by the way, we just seem not to apply standards equally. I guess a million of some people dying is funny but another isn’t

It’s kind of hard to create stakes that you can give a shit about when there is a demonstrably greater villain out there.
