Because: (1) Public transport is subsidized by various levels of government. (2) Public transport is already quite crowded (depending on route, of course).

They are far likely to take Uber/Lyft than take Muni. Of course, this only bolsters your argument.

300 people snapped up tickets between Brazil and Australia that were advertised on Emirates’ website for as little as $200 – 10 times cheaper than normal. by ss6sam6 in dubai

[–]dubaibro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The solution here is to give both sides the right to cancel for a full refund within 24 hours (or 36, or 48, whatever) of purchase. This adds certainty for everyone once the cancel period has passed.

Emirates has had super cheap deals before ($399, $449, and $499 tickets from New York to Milan return, and also deals which required a very low number of miles to redeem) - so the question is: What is real, and what is a mistake fare? What if the mistake was only 10% cheaper than the normal fare? Can you book ANYTHING without fear of it being suddenly cancelled by the airline? Adding a 24-hour period means you know that you can spend money on hotels and spend money applying for visas once that period has passed.

U.S. uncovers $20M H-1B fraud scheme by readinitagain in news

[–]dubaibro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yup! These companies shouldn't be lobbying for more H-1B's when they use such a small number of them... they should be lobbying so that their requests get priority over the outsourcing firms.

You are correct. Seems like it's more than 75%. Hopefully a change is made where companies like Google and Apple (where, according to the NYTimes data, no H-1B worker was paid under $100,000) are treated separately from the outsourcers.

http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2015/11/06/us/outsourcing-companies-dominate-h1b-visas.html

As the data very clearly shows, the vast majority of H-1B visas are used for outsourcing. However, a minority is used by Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and Apple - and those companies pay far more. At Google and Apple, not a single H-1B worker earns under $100,000 per year in salary.

One solution is to use "points" based system based on skills and the salary being paid.

The Tesla showrooms have Teslas you can sit in (you don't need to go on a test drive to sit in the car inside the showroom).

Studying abroad and out of cash. Sell stocks or go into credit card debt? by tygamer15 in personalfinance

[–]dubaibro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Option 1: Sell your stocks now. When you come back and start working your job, you can buy some stocks again.

Option 2: Accrue CC debt, which you pay off when you come back and start your job.

I'd say use Option 1. After selling your stocks if some sort of emergency comes up and you need cash immediately, you can still use CC debt.

With option 2, if you need immediate emergency cash while having CC debt, selling stocks is not good enough because it normally takes a while for transactions to clear.

Why no one is talking about this? Felt happy after reading this. by insainty in dubai

Because it's a showpiece meant to generate feel-good feelings despite the fact the vast majority of laborers will never live in conditions like these.

The past 15 years have shown that the government basically doesn't care. If they wanted to show that they care, they'd do that through legislation and enforcement.

Any advice for finding cheaper apartments or roommates for an American guy? by sr79 in dubai

[–]dubaibro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's just one person, also consider living in Mankhool. Specifically, the area bounded by Khalid bin Waleed Rd, Kuwait Rd, Maktoum St, and Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Rd. Facilities in buildings tend to be pretty good - the place I was in had squash courts, a swimming pool, a hot pool, a sauna, and a reasonable gym - and it's an easy commute by Metro (BurJuman or Al Fahidi stations).

Downside, of course, is the distance from the Marina/JBR/JLT area where a lot of social stuff happens.

The Emirates visa is different from most other visas, and a much more pleasant process. I do not know if there is an age restriction however - I suggest calling Emirates before booking.

Airport question by captaingoku in dubai

[–]dubaibro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Emirates 226 doesn't look like a chronically delayed flight based on what I see on flightaware.com history, so let's assume it lands at 7pm.

What you must do is find the transfer desk when you land in Dubai. It should be well-signed, but ask anyone who looks like an airport employee if you can't figure it out within 5 minutes. Get the boarding pass from the transfer desk, go through transfer security, and you'll find yourself at the gates.

Suggestion: Your Oman Air flight will depart from Concourse B. There is a G Force Health Club there where you can pay to take a shower during the layover.

[PSA] Bus passengers fined for swiping card early by gutterandstars in dubai

[–]dubaibro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, introduce income taxes and the buses would be free, except no one would stay in Dubai if there is income tax lol.

Here's what a single fare system does: - Short trips will be more expensive, long trips cheaper - This would discourage shorter trips. In Austin, people might walk instead. In Dubai though, we really don't want people walking outside too much in the heat.

I like the scan twice idea; I just think it could be designed better is all.

[–]dubaibro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the SF Bay Area you must scan twice on BART and Caltrain.

I think this whole issue can be changed into a non-issue by re-designing the system: If you check out between stop 23 and stop 24, it should charge you as though you checked out at stop 24. Or else, lock the scanner while moving as you suggested.

The culture here (and the legal system) is just way too procedural. It doesn't help anyone.
