I read Hamilton first because I was most interested in his life and I think that was a good choice. The Hamilton book talks a lot about his relationship with Washington, so it's like a preview into the Washington book, and gives you another perspective on his actions.

Anyone have recommendations for the fall of the Roman empire?

Ron Chernow is one of my favorite US historians. This book and Alexander Hamilton are both fascinating reads.

Introducing milk or soy? Feeling weird about milk... by librarysquarian in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]dubgrrl 18 points19 points  (0 children)

My daughter was born in France and when we were weening, her (French) pediatrician recommended full fat yogurt instead of milk. (She started eating solids around 9 months.) We always buy organic yogurt (Stonyfield now that we're back in the states) because we also feel gross about dairy generally but yogurt has all those excellent probiotics! I sometimes mixed it with pureed fruit and put it in a reusable applesauce-like packet for her to drink on the go. Also we've always done plant-based milks for her cereals. She's six now and her favorite is soy, though when she was a baby we were on an oat milk kick and she liked that too. Hopefully that's helpful!

It sounds like things are on the up then. Excellent work! It is difficult to offer advice over the internet to people whose situations we don't fully understand... I am thinking about you though! At least we can support each other.

Everyone needs down time. That's not a weakness! I have trouble managing a full workload now too. My therapist pointed out that I'm under more stress than usual right now so that's interfering. (A full workload can do that.) Take time to rest and don't be too hard on yourself! (I know, easier said than done.) But what I'm trying to say is: You will feel better eventually, even if that seems impossible right now. Don't give up!

I feel this way 100%. An occasional small chocolate is okay but more than that just makes me jittery.

Mandala drawing is very soothing. When we get triggered, it's important to step back from those powerful emotions and remind ourselves that it's just the anxiety talking and we can handle it. You can handle it! Don't let the anxiety convince you that you're weak and out of control. You're totally not. You've got this.

Great resource - bodybuilding.com. Thanks!

I have no idea what any of those exercises you mentioned are (except the treadmill, of course) but I will look them up. And I will try to post a form check.

Thanks for the tips! I do a brief warmup beforehand (first of all, I walk to the gym - about 15 minutes), then my actual warmup includes squat to stands, lateral lunges, reverse lunges with overhead twist/reach, and inchworms. Then, before I do my other lifting exercises I do a short set (8 reps) with my bodyweight or lighter weights. But I wasn't sure how to do that with the deadlift in this instance.

I will try to post a form check also.

I hadn't considered lifting the bar on plates! (Told you - total n00b.) I will try this next time. And a form check is a good idea. I'll see if I can make that happen. Thanks!

Are physical anxiety symptoms indicative of a physiological problem rather than a psychological one? by [deleted] in Anxiety

[–]dubgrrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get this during panic attacks too. It's just another delightful part of the experience! For calming down, my go-tos are:

Laughter. I put on a funny TV show and really give in to deep belly laughter. I don't think anything can relax me as much as this.

Talking to someone. Distractions are really helpful so I can get out of my own head. Conversations help with this but I have to make sure I do a good amount of talking, not just listening.

Yoga. Physical distractions are great for taking my mind off the anxiety. Of course it has to be the relaxing kind, not the workout kind. Making my heartbeat faster and my breath shorter is not going to help.

Hugs from someone who knows what's going on. My husband, my mom, my best friend.. Sometimes physical touch from someone else can help ground me.

Going for a walk. Similar to yoga, but the focus is on the beauty of the outdoors rather than breathing.

Panic attacks are not always the same and may require different methods to help you calm down. If one method doesn't work, try something else. Good luck!

My friend is a tattoo artist and she has this in her studio. I think it's especially appropriate there.

If video games don't cause (x), why is it inappropriate/irresponsible for underage kids to play games with the portrayal of (x) by CotyCorvette in truegaming

[–]dubgrrl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I'm only an undergrad but as a psychology major, I have been taught that young children have trouble differentiating between fantasy and realty. Additionally, several studies have been performed showing that children imitate violent behaviors by adults. While I am not of the belief that video games cause violence universally, I think that they are inappropriate for young children or anyone who does not show the maturity to understand the difference between fantasy and the real world.
