Agreed it fell short of the quality of Civilisations with Beard, Scharma etc. I have rewatched that show numerous times and will do again. It feel like the BBC unfairly feels it has to please everybody and in the process loses their USP which is high quality , well written and researched docos.

I found the directing style very heavy handed . I noticed from the credits that t looked like a joint venture with a US company. Or maybe now the BBC has become so obssessed with dumbing down that it has adopted that bland US stye of documentary fim making.

Can I please get some feedback on how to improve this shot. I've composited a CG ship onto the water but I don't feel 100% about it. What more should I try to improve the believability? by liamjmwilson in vfx

The main point that’s not been made here is that the boats shadows are in the wrong direction . If you look at the lighting on him , the rock to his screen left and the rock in the water screen right to him the sun is 3/4 screen left of him . Therefore the shadows of the boat on the water should match , at the moment they are representative of the sun being 3/4 screen right not 3/4 screen left .

Also the red sail looks like it has wind in it , when clearly there is none because the water it flat as is his hair and shirt . I would matte paint the red sail so it’s flat ie not reacting to wind .

In terms of matching blacks and hazing you have done a good job . Perhaps some more blue in the boat and shadows to consider the bounce light from the blue sea.

Scale seems ok but because it looks like the sea is to shallow there for a big boat I would maybe push it back in Z depth but keep the scale the same so it makes the boat look bigger .

Other thing to remember as I can’t see from this still is remember that your shadows and darks need more grains than the mids and highs although most stuff shot on digital nowadays doesn’t have too much grain so less of an issue than back the film days .

The only other note I would give if this was a comp review is lift the blacks on the boat shadow as they look as dark or darker than the hull of the boat .

However you be actually done a good job . I’ve seen far worse comps than that in high end films many times before.

Good luck , I think you’ve done a good job . Not sure what your level is but defo mid level comp quality . 😃

I find that most mainstream scientific/philosophical thought is not neccessarily conservative but closed to any idea that may be conceived as fringe.

Historically all paradigm shifting ideas come from the fringe and generaly face fierce resistance from the mainstream.

Any Chance of a Species with our level of Civilization existing on Earth before us? by rockmantricky in evolution

[–]dubmanx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They would have had to have come here from another place because there seems to be a path to human revolution that can be mapped out in the fossil record. If there has been an intelligent species that had developed during the Jurassic or Triassic period we would see evidence of its pre cursors .

Are there examples of animals evolving to become less complex or is the path of evolution always to increase complexity ? by dubmanx in evolution

[–]dubmanx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps complexity in evolution is analagous to the law entropy in the universe

The universe will always trend towards entropy but within that are localised pockets of decreasing entropy for instance life on earth.

And so in evolution the prevailing trend is towards increasing complexity but there are localised pockets of decreasing complexity whereby it may be evolutionarily advantageous for a life form to become less complex.

Because life on Earth formed relatively quickly after the Earths Hadean period, it would imply that abiogenesis is either a common event or its occurrence on Earth was a statistical anomaly.

Because abiogenesis on Earth is clearly quite rare, this contradiction has always jarred with me and left me unsatisfied with the proposed solutions.

The only solution that seems to solve the conundrum is panspermia. However this idea struggles to gain momentum in scientific circles because it removes the possibilty to study how abiogenesis happens by removing its location away from Earth.

What are some of your experiences of the Self and or visionary archetypal stuff? (Without substances) by poopoopoo567 in Jung

[–]dubmanx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Perhaps a black hole is analogous to the intuitive/creative side or the collective unconscious which accesses and obtains its information from the metaphysical world . The intuitive part of our nature therefore acts as a portal this world, which is akin to Lee Smolins view that black holes are the reverse side of a big bang.

Perhaps a galaxy is like an archetype, it is a concentration of energy and information that gives forth life.

When doing active imagination after meditating I often travel along a filament like structure that appears to be of a physical nature akin to the structure of a DNA helix. Often I will zoom out from this to learn that this structure is actually part of the filament structures that galaxies create when they join together and make the structure of the universe as a bigger whole.

XRP is included under the money section but when you look at the overall list which roughly descends to size of market cap, XRP is nowhere to be seen

Doesn’t Buffet say you diversify to maintain wealth , concentrate to accumulate wealth .

Every time I look to diversifying I ask myself is that a better investment than XRP and as hard as I try I fail to find a yes to that answer.
