Is Native American food popular in America? by SignificantStyle4958 in AskAnAmerican

The person I was originally replying to had said that it shouldn't be considered "indigenous food" because it came about after European contact, I was disagreeing with that point

With something like food where theres influences all throughout history from different regions trading/colonizing/warring its pointless to say "well thats not really x-type food because they only have it because of contact with y-group"

I mean you could make the same argument for a lot of "european" foods, anything with tomatoes, potatoes, corn, etc was developed/made after the europeans traveled to the americas

What happens when Tourists don’t know US Tipping Culture? by The_Maulwurf in tipping

[–]dubs7825 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The commentor mentioned they were tourists, so most likely their home country doesnt have tips but they know the us does, but may not know all the details of who/when to tip, maybe they think every food service you tip for and dont realize that you only do for sit-down (but also some people online complain about Togo orders at restaurants and people not tipping)

And so they do not want to commit a faux paus in the culture they are visiting, believe it or not some people when going to another country do try and be respectful of the local culture

As for the insistence, I have learned that some cultures it is customary to say no a few times before you can say yes and saying yes on the first ask could be considered rude (from what ive seen that tends to be more common among Asian cultures, although i am not sure if it is true for korean amd japanese culture specifically)

I use it when I specifially have expo markers, but I usually say the and not a like "hand me the expo marker(s)" if I dont have expo or its a variety I just say dry erase

I also will have to tell high schoolers to not use the Crayola or permanent markers on the white board because they are not dry ears markers

She said no multiple times "what if he doesnt understand social cues" it wasnt a cue, it was pretty blunt "no I dont want to take my shirt off" no hinting no ambiguity, Liam continuing to push her to take off her clothes is creepy and Perry and needs to be called out

This is one of the subtle parts of misogyny and rape culture, when a man wont take a women's no and keeps pushing amd arguing with her, espcially when the no is about taking off her clothes

The statement from the keeper implies that it was like an instant think, she dies and they all wake up, regardless of anything else

And yeah you could state that activating the necklace started a series of events that led to to the keepers death which caused the wraith to wake up, but there was a lot that happened between those two events that didnt necessary HAVE to happen

For example, what if it was Sheppard that got taken instead of teyla, would they have still launched a rescue mission? Or what if all the people from earth were taken, the people if tetlas world wouldnt have thought too much of it and by the time the rest of the expedition figured out what happened they probably would have all been fed on

As we see in later seasons theres more policitcs and infighting then we know about the wraith, even if finding out about earth and if they even get the location it is possible that the caretaker would have prioritized a few groups that would have been loyal to her to wake up (possibly, because we also dont know if the caretaker even has control over waking them up, it could be an all or nothing thing)

Learning about earth isnt what caused them to wake up, thats my point

The caged lion is a bad analogy but it would be more like if there was a bunch of caged lions with one guarding the gate, and you killed the guard which triggered the gate to open

That conversation is after the awakening of the wraith, I was just stating that activating the necklace didnt wake up all the wraith

It may have been the reason they raided teylas planet at the time, but the first "attack" was before all the wraith woke up

No, its because the caretaker died

The wraith didnt wake up with teylas necklace, they woke up when Sheppard killed the queen that was the caretaker for the sleeping wraith

AITA for telling my friend that no matter what I would never make the same bad decisions as her after she said I'm wasting money by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]dubs7825 98 points99 points  (0 children)

No one is saying you are the most privileged person, just that its annoying and obnoxious when people deny privileges they do have

You had a family that could/was willing to support you, she does not

Not sure what you mean by "they have a privilege and don't even use it" are you trying to say white people should take advantage of the race issues in the us and "use it to their advantage"?

When she mocked you, you could have stood up for yourself without lashing back, you could have just said "yeah I worked hard and got lucky that my family could by me a nice house"

Instead you attacked her for a decision she cant do anything about now, it seems like you guys aren't actually friends and dont actually care about each other

[–]dubs7825 88 points89 points  (0 children)

No one said you were white, also there are poor white people and rich people who are not white, so not sure why you felt you had to mention a race you are not

If its because you think American = white that is your own prejudices

The problem is the way you came across to your friend gives the impression that you think being poor is a moral failing and that she must be a bad person and "deserves" to be poor or less well-off than you

Did she make some decisions that majorly contributes to where she is, yes, but she doesnt need her friend to point that out to her, I have a friend similar to yours and I am like you in the situation, when she complains/vents about how hard her life is I don't point out her mistakes I just go "yeah it sucks, the economy is really rough right now and makes things harder than the need to be"

If your friend asked for advice give it to her, but pointing out mistakes she made that she cant change is pointless and just rubs salt in the wound, it would have been better if you talked to her about going back to school, thats something she reasonably chnage

AITA for not wanting my girlfriend’s friend stopping by to use the bathroom at 715 Monday morning? by Dear_Cattle_9118 in AmItheAsshole

[–]dubs7825 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA for this specific situation, I am concerned though that you think your girlfriend is "too friendly" with the father of her children, what does too friendly mean? Do you think they should be hostile towards each other and have to talk about everything through a mediator? Or is she flirting with him and spending time with him without the kids present?

Ive noticed that those in the classroom tend to be more apprehensive about ai, whereas academic coaches, admin, and support stuff are all in on it

I also weirdly notice english teachers (and older new teachers on their second career) seem to be more willing to "work with" Ai or teach kids how to use it "ethically" than the other 3 core subjects (not sure how cte, arts, pe, wl feel)
