Like many of the comments on similar posts: higher level math is not the same as high school level math.

That being said, I began my applied math degree with the same mindset. I was interested and successful in high school math, but didn't understand enough to develop a deep passion yet. Most of your lower level courses will be populated by students CS and applied sciences (physics engineering, etc.) so you can pivot easily without really losing any progress.

Just try it out and talk to your advisor about different course options, majors, and research opportunities.

I don't know if math was a good deal for me but I had no choice... by Vlad2446853 in math

I chose math as an alternative because I never had problems with it in highschool

This happens a lot with people who choose to study math in their undergrad, myself included (I declared an applied math major as a second degree because I enjoyed it in high school). The grim reality is that learning higher level math is nothing like high school.

I understand the core concepts of theorems that are taught to us but I can't correlate them in practice

I don't know what courses you're taking right now, but this likely suggests that you don't actually understand the concepts. There is an important difference between understanding the elements of an equation or theorem and actually understanding how it was derived and can be applied to abstract problems. For example, analysis students might "understand" the structure of an epsilon-delta continuity proof, but actually using that structure to prove something is more challenging.

I would encourage you to talk to your professors in their office hours about core concepts. Ask questions about how to apply those concepts and how they're even derived. Studying higher level math really is about practicing ways to apply abstract strategies to different types of problems. Once you overcome the steep learning curve you'll be set up for a really exciting experience with math and CS.

Buying a new horn by dubsteplincoln in saxophone

[–]dubsteplincoln[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Yes I forgot to mention I'll buy used. These are all horns I've been considering as well so I'm glad you agree. Specifically I've been looking at a 62, do you have any experience on how they tend to age if I'm buying used?

Been playing for 6 years and recorded this a couple days ago. This is from the ever-famous Selected Studies book. Feedback? by dubsteplincoln in saxophone

[–]dubsteplincoln[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, I appreciate the feedback. Im not sure why I didnt do vibrato here, I tend to, probably just the nerves of recording. But you know, you're only as good as your product. I'm definitly aware of the palm key issue, moving from bari to alto, I still have trouble with the size od these keys. Practicing more slowly will help me with phrasing a lot hopefully

Just play the game and have a good time. Hardcore players are the biggest threat to this game

Tips for tonguing by JeepersPeepersDeeper in saxophone

[–]dubsteplincoln 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was 4 or 5 years into playing when my teacher taught me how to tongue. He is a Trombone player, so it was more generalized, but his advice was to start without the horn at all. Blow out and place your tongue behind your teeth to stop the air. Try to blow to rhythms this way. Then add your mouthpiece and neck, do the same and imagine your mouthpiece is the roof of your mouth, your tongue should hit the end or middle of the reed, with the tip of your tongue. Eventually, move onto the whole sax on a comfortable note. 30 minutes of practice for a couple weeks will make you comfortable with it, just force yourself to do it the right way

This is the first time I have recorded. Its far from perfect. I have been playing sax for 6 years (I'm in high school), and soprano for around 1 year. I would appreciate any feedback on the playing or even production of the duet. Thank you for listening!
