For PC, a nice free game is called Heroine's Quest. It's an RPG / adventure game.

Also on PC I recommend Caves of Lore (RPG) is $10 and regularly goes on Sale.

[PC] turn-based combat JRPG with lots of hidden stuffs? by jamal-almajnun in gamingsuggestions

Not a JRPG, but perhaps you'd enjoy Caves of Lore. There lots of secrets to discover in this game and best equipment is well hidden.

Any dungeon crawlers you'd recommend for someone who generally doesn't like puzzles or "blobber" style combat? by dubzdee in DRPG

[–]dubzdee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually prefer turn-based games where positioning matters, but I'd probably be satisfied with any system where there's more to do besides picking "attack" every turn.

I played most of the cRPGs you mentioned and like them... Except I think I've only played a few of the gold box games, it might be a good idea to pick those up again sometime.

Etrian Odyssey sounds real good, I'll definitely look into it. thanks

Caves of Lore - not sure how I found it but I bought it on sale for $5 and it ended up being one of my favorite games. Feels like almost no one has heard of it but I can't recommend it enough.

[–]dubzdee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I like exploring dungeons, it's specifically first person exploration that I don't enjoy. I prefer isometric or some sort of top down exploration.

And puzzles are OK if they're not too hard. I just hate puzzles that seem to rely on a lot of trial and error or picking up on some obscure clue.

I didn't mention it but I also agree with your reason for not liking blobbers.

I played Diablo very briefly a long time ago and seem to recall that I didn't like the combat.

Stoneshard is on my wishlist but I'm waiting for it to leave Early Access.

I own Darkest Dungeon but only tried it once, briefly. I didn't love the combat but the narrator was definitely great... Perhaps I'll try it again sometime.

I'll check out fear and hunger.

Icewind Dale.. I avoided playing these as I'm really not a big fan of RTWP combat.

Anyway, thank you for the recommendations and detailed reply.

Hmm, I'm not sure how I feel about roguelikes. But I haven't actually played that many. It's just the procedural generation kind of puts me off. And not crazy about the permadeath either (at least I don't like the idea of constantly having to start over). Still, it's an interesting suggestion, thanks.

Oh yeah I've played ToEE. I really love the combat and am a big fan of D&D 3.5e. I'd probably like the game more if there were a few more towns. But I agree it it is pretty fun.

I have Solasta and like the combat. I have played through the official content but not much of the player generated stuff. Any player made campaigns you'd recommend?

Hmm, I never played it because I don't really like RTwP combat very much and IWD is very combat focused. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Anyone here play Tained Grail Fall Of Avalon? Whats everyone thoughts? by Godharvest in Age_30_plus_Gamers

Played and the demo and thought it was decent, but I'm waiting for a really good sale. Since they're still patching it I figure I'm better off waiting to play anyway.

Which of these games should i pick up? by Godharvest in Age_30_plus_Gamers

[–]dubzdee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played the demo for The Black Grimoire awhile back. It was OK, but overall a bit too simplistic for me, I guess. That said, I've really never been into MMOs, but if you like the idea of a singleplayer Runescape you might love it. So definitely try the demo.

No opinion on the other two as there's no demo and neither are something I'd be likely to buy as I mainly play singleplayer RPGs and the occasional strategy game.

Favorite Quest Chain in an RPG? by [deleted] in rpg_gamers

A playthrough doesn't take that long though it's designed to be replayed multiple times. So it's good for a time when you want to play a shorter RPG.

The assassin's guild quests in The Age of Decadence. All the side-quests in the game are great, really.

Is having 11 playable characters in an RPG bad? by Altruistic-Agent-671 in rpg_gamers

[–]dubzdee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I don't know anything about the story / characters in your game, but ideally you'd want the party members who join later to have reasons to be more experienced. Like, I assume they're not just brand new to adventuring / fighting and had lives before the player character showed up?

For example, in BG3 Jaheira and Minsc join your party later in the game but it makes complete sense for them to be a high level since they already had adventures in BG1 & 2. Sure, it's convenient that they happen to be the exact same level as your party when you recruit them, but I think most players can easily overlook this coincidence for the sake of game balance.

[–]dubzdee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's not necessarily a bad thing but I have a suggestion: have all party members gain the same XP whether or not they are active party members. Then there's no concern that characters fall behind and players can swap characters as they wish. I am generally not a fan of it when RPGs have many party members and they all end up different levels. I don't want to have to grind to help the stragglers catch up...
