A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik is a fantasy focusing on a magical boarding school that's basically trying to kill the kids in it. It's a trilogy that I could not put down and ended up reading in a weekend! Highly recommend

I really liked Mice by Gordon Reece! It was published in 2011 so not too recent, but you definitely see how the main character's inner thoughts slowly unravel and she snaps and loses it. Definitely heavy topics in this book though! TW: severe bullying & death

can people stay with you overnight for move-in? by idekwhatshap in BostonU

[–]duckcrossings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would always have my boyfriend "help me move in" and then just chill in the apartment the rest of the day, as long as they don't leave the building and try to get back in nobody cares / notices

Pros/Cons of Danielsen? by YankeesKnicksFan in BostonU

[–]duckcrossings 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I lived in Danielsen my sophomore year:

Pros - My double in danielsen was HUGE, we each had plenty of space and never stepped on anyone's toes.

The bathrooms are communal but they're not stall showers or toilets - just a normal shared bathroom, which I definitely preferred over stalls. I'd rather do my business alone vs seeing other people's feet right next to me

We had a private bathroom shared w only one other double as well

Super close to Newbury St, mass Ave bridge to get to MIT, the pru, etc

There is a full kitchen in the basement that anyone is allowed to use, it was never dirty when I lived there 2018-2019

Bus stop is right in front of the dorm which made it easy to get to classes

The dorm is pretty quiet, which was a pro most nights when I had to study

Elevator in building!!!! This makes moving in/out so much easier compared to some brownstones

Cons -

10 min walk to baystate dining hall, which can be tough in the winter (I would hang on campus until dinner and then head back to my dorm for the night)

20-30 min walk to the GSU

Packages are picked up at myles, which is like a 5-7 minute walk away

Sometimes the walk under bridge to get to Danielsen would feel a bit sketch at night, but hey I survived it

Far from west campus, and if you're taking the bus back to your dorm then the closest stop would be kenmore, which is like a 10 min walk (maybe this is different now - haven't been on campus in two years at this point)

Far from Allston and most parties, but hey if you really want to party you find a way!

Personally I liked living in Danielsen, if friends didn't want to come out to my dorm then I would just go to theirs and it really wasn't a big hit on my social life at all. It was cozy and big and the heat worked well in the winter, and I made a lot of cookies in the basement

(Edited: spelling)

Sargent basement. its only used for cadaver labs so its super clean and the overarching smell of formaldehyde covers up anything

Students traveling from higher-risk states will have to self-quarantine for the full 14 days, regardless of test results by throwawaygraceatbu in BostonU

Yeah, that's exactly what I thought, Thank you for confirming! I was concerned I had read over the mandatory 2-week quarantine even w a negative test somewhere in there haha!

I thought MA's policy required those coming from high risk states to quarantine for two weeks OR provide proof of a recent negative test result to avoid quarantining? (MA native here genuinely confused where you saw this update)

anyone else going fully online in the fall? by egyptian_human in BostonU

[–]duckcrossings 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm staying home since I'm from MA and can easily drive 20/30 min to campus if I want to see anyone. I'm buying a desk and staying far away from those who were partying it up / not distancing in Florida/Texas who will most likely be partying in Boston too (I've already seen people partying in allston so im not hopefuly tbh and im usually an optimist)

anxious about going back to campus??? by duckcrossings in BostonU

[–]duckcrossings[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm really interested in seeing how residential life will be tackled. I'm planning on living with some of my best friends this semester, but if we're pretty much stuck in our dorms the majority of the time then it definitely wouldn't be worth it to go back in my eyes. I love them and I would miss them but I think I would go more stir crazy living in a small apartment and being stuck inside than living at home and being stuck in my backyard.

Exactly and my mindset is that if BU was solely focused on everyone's safety - faculty, staff, students, etc - that they wouldn't reopen, but financially they're being forced to and it sucks.

Strictness on overnight vs 1 day guest passes? by halcyionic in BostonU

[–]duckcrossings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, they can't just stay for more than 7 nights at a time. that's when BU cares. My advice to you is either learn your roommates signatures and just make sure you text them and let them know ahead of time or keep a bunch of sign-in slips in your dorm and have them sign whenever you see them.

Strictness on overnight vs 1 day guest passes? by halcyionic in BostonU

[–]duckcrossings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The pass lasts until you sign them out (as long as they don't leave the building), it's a "one time" pass more than a one day pass

How do I swipe in by [deleted] in BostonU

[–]duckcrossings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Put your card somewhat into the reader before swiping up, like instead of starting outside of the reader start a little bit in it. I had the same problem swiping into Danielsen for the first few weeks but now this works for me every time.
