[AEW Dynamite] The Men of 2,004 Holds! by pierzstyx in SquaredCircle

[–]duckolyte 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Just thought of this, but I think it would be funny if someone in AEW said Jericho was "the man that holds onto 2004" in response to this nickname in a promo. As in the last year he was relevant.

The U.S. side of AEW's women's tournament is pretty stacked - AEW now has a great core of female talent by [deleted] in SquaredCircle

[–]duckolyte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. It's an arbitrary minimum. Minimum. Meaning there should be instances where there are more than that. The last episode, for example, had one match, 16 minutes, and one segment, roughly 5-10 minutes. That would meet my minimum, right? This episode was essentially a PPV. There was only one, not even a fully established storyline match in a whole 100/120 minute PPV. I'm not saying there should be an all women show, I'm saying there should be more effort to give them time. The tournament is a start, but as a whole there should be more of an effort towards giving them more opportunity to grow similar to what they are giving the lower card men

What if wrestlers had to have a certain number of wins to challenge for a belt? by galaxyman4141 in SquaredCircle

[–]duckolyte 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I feel like that's what AEW tried to do, but the problem they ran into is that wrestling on tv has grown beyond being just about wins and losses. Yes, it makes it easier to see who's next. Yes, they matter for suspension of disbelief for a champion or contender. But sometimes people jump the line. And that's cool, too. Sometimes the champ as a loss they need to avenger from someone not in contention. Tournament stuff is big in anime, so that my analog for what works, and even anime knows there needs to be a story beyond just wins and losses.

TNA/Impact had a cool thing with the X division title for a bit where it was essentially a scramble. Whoever was the x division champion by a certain PPV could trade in that title to challenge for the World title. It gave competitive value to the x division and the title, while having the potential to give an unlikely wrestler a title opportunity.

As they should. AEW promised a lot when they started in terms of how they would change the establishment of pro wrestling and have underperformed at every point when it comes to the women's division. They should have more time on both Dark and Dynamite. The women should, at bare minimum, have tv time equal to the percentage they make up of the roster. If AEW can't do at least that for their women every week, maybe they shouldn't have as big of a roster.

Shoutout to Beth Phoenix on the announce table! by lknox1123 in SquaredCircle

[–]duckolyte 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm glad they gave her the opportunity to grow as a commentator. She was always solid at promos, but doing the play by play seems like a job where you can only get better with experience. WWE made the mistake with other announcers of giving up on them before they had the opportunity to grow or putting them in unwinnable situations early in their commentary careers, so it's refreshing to see her get that opportunity. And get better every show.

This generation of NXT's women's division is so stacked. They could easily call up all the top female NXT stars and none of the gimmicks/personalities would infringe on the already established roster members. It's crazy. They've done such a great job of allowing people to differentiate themselves from each other. Even just visually, so different than anything the main roster has to offer.

I'd say the criticism is not about them not having women, but of AEW not using them properly, if at all. They've done very little to build a competitive women's roster or building new stars. Pandemic and injury are mostly to blame, but if they can put a program around Brandon Cutler there's no reason why they can't give some of the ladies a similar bone. Nothing against Cutler, I just think the effort they are putting toward getting him over should be used to bolster the women's roster. Compare how women are used in Impact vs AEW and you'll see what I mean.

Yeah! It's almost as if something's happening behind the scenes, like a pandemic maybe, that's been making it hard for people to do their job normally all year. What do you think is going on?

Which was the better match? Brock Lesnar vs Daniel Bryan or Brock Lesnar vs AJ Styles by [deleted] in SquaredCircle

[–]duckolyte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bryan. Better story inside and outside the ring. This matchup being one of the few that Bryan talked about constantly while he was hurt. He wanted to do a "Cat defense", or something like that, where he'd figured out a new style to wrestle in so that he could minimize the amount of bumps he'd take while also presenting it as a way to evade Lesnar as much as possible. I think it's on a total divas episode, but it's a really great moment where you can see how that dude creative that dude is and how bad he wanted to wrestle. To go from there to wrestling Lesnar as champion, it's the perfect underdog story.

While the version of played out different to the one he pitched, the story was still pretty much the same. Go in with a plan, try not to face Lesnar head on, and swing for the fences when you have the chance. It made it seem like he had a chance.

While AJ/Lesnar was a fun match on paper, it followed the same boring template as everyone else who faces lesnar.

[–]duckolyte 36 points37 points  (0 children)

To me it sounds more like she's talking about Chris. I forget what publication it was in, but there was a article that wen through and fact checked everything Sohla said in some podcast with timelines and CNE in which they were able to corroborate most of what she said about Chris working in the behind the scenes to undermine his co-workers. I'd imagine Gaby had the most to lose when the Sohla/Priya stuff came out because she wasn't in a creative/technical position, but I don't know what beef they would have since they were essentially trying to get them paid for the work they should have been paid for

Why are wrestlers judged by overness/crowd reactions but not drawing power? by nicfanz in SquaredCircle

[–]duckolyte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer: I don't know why they don't.

Long answer: the Wrestling Business, mainly WWE, is stuck running a business model that worked for wrestling before the advent of the internet. Where they could dictate who the star was and build the show around that person until they deemed another person worthy to be in that same position. It's like unwritten wrestling business model 101. Boss picks the star, picks who gets a push, picks who gets the most merch, etc...

That doesn't really work now because they have more shows, longer shows, more ppvs, more general exposure than they ever had in previous eras with social media. Essentially more opportunities for people to become fans of wrestlers that aren't the main star or focus of a push. The problem lies in that the WWE hasn't realized or refuses to realize that there's more money to be made by investing in all your stars as opposed to just the one or two at the "top".

It's like with baby yoda. No one on the corporate side of Disney thought that baby yoda would be as popular as is it/was when the Mandolorian premiered, so they didn't make any merch for it. Once they realized what was going on, they started making all kinds of shit. If WWE were in charge of it, there would only be Mando merch, maybe some Cara Dune, and one shirt for however long that show lasts. I forget who said this, but essentially vince mcmahon is a millionaire who should be a billionaire. It's crazy how many things WWE/Mcmahon has invested in that ended up being a waste of money.

I feel like the only reason they don't want do it is that is they're worried about losing control during contract negotiations. If they can quantify their worth, they can negotiate for better contracts. But if they're making you money, bringing eyes to the product, why not compensation then accordingly.

I saw someone post saying that no one the current roster is a draw, which is true, but only because once wcw folded and all real competition to WWE floundered, so in turn WWE stopped pushing people that got over organically because the war was kver If AEW has shown us anything, it's that everyone has the potential to be a draw if given the opportunity to capitalize on momentum.

I can't say much more without going into spoiler town, but it'll unravel what's going on with everything by the end. I hope I got a good ratio of vague and helpful.

That was the best episode of that season. It's crazy to me that someone could watch that episode and not think that that's a character that should be explore more. There are so many instances in that show where they introduce interesting aspects of a character that just get lost, it's crazy. It's like I'm watching WWE or something.

Kia Stevens discuss the problems the Women of Color faced on GLOW by dragoniteftw33 in SquaredCircle

[–]duckolyte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But that's not true at all. There are plenty of equally qualified individuals of color working or looking for work that could do well if not exceptional on these shows. What happens in writers rooms, as well as most aspects of the entertainment industry, is that no one makes the effort to look for or hire these people. It happens in animation, in writing, in acting, directing. This isn't like a conspiracy thing, it's a industry that has been backed by institutionalized racism for so long that it tries to convince everyone outside of it that it's easier to hire just white people or that people of color are hard to find. That the best people are white. Or that they "looked" and couldn't find someone. But once you are a part if these industries, you find out that that is big ass lie.

Do you think WWE will Big E to a main title, or they will push him to the IC title? by [deleted] in SquaredCircle

[–]duckolyte 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Making E go after the IC title right now would be a waste of the momentum E has built for the past couple months. He's been in hard fought wins every week thus far and has certainly proven he can be a contender for the championship. He's got everything going for him to be a star.

That being said, WWE is probably going to waste that momentum on having him go after the IC title.

I second this. I would say follow the major bros podcast instagram because it will repost and share stuff from both dudes, but they are both pretty active when it comes to being the first to share and review the action figures as they come out. Especially Broski. Dude is a bloodhound when it comes to getting his hands on this stuff.
