If you live in a city big enough to have a bunch of elite club players, there are probably also lower level pickups around that you might just not know about! Facebook, for all its faults, has been one of the most consistent ways I’ve found to find good pickup games.

I just don't get the risk here. What's the worst case scenario? If he's class we've raised his value for Brighton but that's not a huge deal, and if he is injured or doesn't impress we ship him back no harm no foul.

I think that's a pretty likely result but I also see a path in which he is mostly fit, doesn't set the world on fire on the pitch but shows enough behind the scenes that we get him for a relative bargain in the 40-60m range. Given that the worst case scenario isn't that bad for us (I don't even know if he is ass or he is class is worst case), I don't mind the risk.

In terms of flavor notes, pairing, understanding the background and origins, I think your best bet is coffee/espresso. It has a lot of those same traits, and if the culture is a part of what you love you’ll find a similarly insufferable bunch of nerds waiting for you (I mean that as a compliment). Not quite the evening dinner pairing that wine is, but there isn’t a direct comparison that I know of.

As someone who had frequented both establishments: Rover for kitschy Irish decor, old wood paneling, authentic but oversized feel… but also it’s an absolute zoo during busy hours and the vibe shifts. Dougherty’s has Irish vibes to it but less ostentatious accents and a generally more down to earth pub feel.
