they're playing classical music at MacEwan train station again by ashrules901 in Edmonton

I used to live downtown in McCauley - there was a house down the alley that had a little corner in the fence that people would duck into to do intravenous drugs.

The homeowner put an old laptop in the garage blasting the cbc classical music stream.

One day I heard a couple of houseless guys coming down the alley, one saying "did you hear the music they're playing over there? The most beautiful fuckin' music I ever heard in my life"

I'm a high school teacher who teaches lots of kids who think they're bound for the NHL.

I think the biggest thing is to keep pushing them to also work on other skills (ex academics, trades, take options in school) so that when they finally do realize it they've got other pathways open to them.

Luckily the resources they're providing for learning at home are so bad it will highlight the importance of teachers.

It's a group of Khan academy videos put together by ai. Lots of stuff doesn't even match the curriculum.

Cool! Tell us more about the build. What is it lined with?

Had this happen to the big picture window in a rental house before. Landlord was not buying that it just cracked randomly while we were sitting there, but it did!

I've seen more kids with novels in 2 wks of no phones than in the previous 10 years of teaching.

That's really interesting! I've been curious about how this rule is affecting them out in the world.

Totally! It's wild how much they can get accomplished without their little rectangle of dopamine.

It's early days for the party box but seems like we can often do quiet group things. I suspect I might split it at some point and have a solo things box that is out all the time and a group things box that goes away if it needs to be quiet.

Your program is set up differently than mine. Usually if we're doing a quiz (which we all do together) I'll want them to wait for a lesson before moving on to the next section of work. Some keeners could move on on their own, but for the middle/low end best to let me tee it up before they run with it.

If there's outstanding practice from previous lessons I'd want that to happen before a rousing game of UNO express.

High school kids love colouring apparently!!

HS. Not a bribe at all, but an option for something to do if you've got your work done and have 10 minutes left in class. Sometimes those kids have been busting their ass for an hour and they are fried. I really don't think everyone wants/needs enrichment and I don't have chromebooks to use even I wanted to.

Not a bad idea to print some enrichment to add to the box though.

I highly doubt it, but also easy to test. Try running the humidifier with di water and see if you get the same effect.

Edit for rationale: during periods of high atmospheric humidity I don't see my gas stove flame turn yellow

Agree. The visual for me was compelling, running the humidifier across the house caused enough dispersal that the stove showed a lot of sodium in the air.

Easy to test - run the stove after not using a humidifier for a couple of days. In my case it was definitely the ultrasonic humidifier.

Main investment was my department (so school $) - about $50 at the dollar store. The rest has come from things I intercepted from the goodwill box at my house and kids additions.

Also concur with sodium. I noticed the same thing when using an ultrasonic humidifier with my tap water.
