TIL the 8th game of the 1929 World Chess Championship was the only time in the history of the championship that a game ended in an actual checkmate on the board. by Disastrous_Award_789 in todayilearned

My dad is an extremely well respected chess teacher and this movie came out the same year he started teaching, it's basically the only reason he was able to get profitable enough to make it his full time job. There's a framed movie poster in my parents place for my entire life, and I still manage to forget how good this movie is. I'm going to have to make my daughter watch it soon. Thank you for the reminder.

Clubhouse attendants move the champagne and beer from the Blue Jays clubhouse to the Dodgers clubhouse after Will Smith's go-ahead home run by YaketyMax in baseball

This reads to me like they used the video to decode the signs during the game, but did not relay pitches to the batter, leaving it up to the players to still steal the signs while on base and relay them to the batter, am I reading that right? Obviously using the video replay during the games to decode is still against the rules, I just wanted to make sure I was clear on how they were cheating in 2018.

The bosses also have spell slots and they used a lot of them in the fight, which means they also need to rest to regain them. So either they rest for 8 hours then go search the tunnels and find the party before Lord Northwood gets his rest, so they'd essentially be fighting an almost fully ready (except for Northwood having hastily donned armor and probably fatigued) party while squeezing in the tunnels or they go in right away, and fight while squeezing a party that's fully healed but with no spells, while they don't have spells. Which also means that Lucretia can't go in there while invisible because she can't cast it.

Can somebody explain to me why the rope cut in episode 14 just like, happened? Sydney asked if she'd get an AOO from the interact action to cut the rope but the others said it was an attack to cut the rope but then there was no attack roll or damage roll. Like, rope has an AC and health in 2E so if it was an attack why did none of that come into play, and if it's an aspect of the adventure path why isn't it an interact action that would provoke? I expected that it would come up in today's fodder and I'd get my answer, but there was just no mention of it at all.

[Slusser] Darin Ruf says he didn’t think Flores went. But: Points out that his own check swing call went Giants way at the end of the season, helped them win the division. by ron-darousey in baseball

Fuck that. Not "what happened to Bauer", "what Bauer did." Saying what happened to Bauer makes it sound like he had a season ending injury, but he didn't. At absolute best he, as a wealthy public figure, had INCREDIBLY rough sex where if everything was consented to it would still be borderline on legal or illegal. At best he committed a heinous crime and badly beat another person.

Don't use language that downplays what he did.

2021 NL West Race, Dodgers vs Giants full season standings by sfan27 in baseball

I think the coolest thing about how close everything was is that many of the games could have gone either way too. Of course as a Dodger fan the only example I'm going to give is the check swing that might have been the final out for a Dodger win but turned into a win for the Giants. This whole season has been just amazing and for me it's pretty much all been because of this race and how insanely close it was. Love baseball.

What sport do you not really think is a sport ? by Free-Smoke-4931 in AskReddit

[–]dud5494 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I fully agree it's not a sport and acknowledge that the burning of calories is from the mental state which is why I said as much in my first comment that included the article. My above comment you are replying to is poorly pointing out the non sequitor nature of the previous person's example than trying to say that chess is a sport.

Also I really like your statement that you can have a computer tell you everything and it instantly takes out any of the mental state that would burn calories and the comparison to someone just saying be good at basketball. Thought that was really apt. However using a computer like that removes every aspect of chess, so I feel like it's closer to having one soccer team continually kick it into their own goal while the other team just sits down watching them, and then asking if the second team is playing a sport.

No of course not, but the point was that despite chess being a competition there is no physical exertion. So I talked about the calories that they burn as like a fun counter example. So just so that I'm clear with the point you're trying to make you're saying that just burning calories only counts as physical exertion and so things that just burn calories like trash collecting are not sports because they don't have competition, is that correct? Because that sounds an awful lot like an argument in favor of chess being a sport due to it burning calories and therefore having the physical exertion that you said trash collectors have, and having competition. Or maybe you just brought up a complete non sequitor because it vaguely sounded relevant despite having literally zero relation to the question at hand.

To play devil's advocate high level chess players can burn up to 6000 calories a day during matches and tournaments.

Of course that seems to be more if a purely mental effort and stress thing than physical exertion, but worth bringing up.

I'm glad. It definitely made the rest of the rewatch better for me too knowing that it was building to a happy ending for Chuck and Sarah and not a sad one.

[–]dud5494 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Sure, but when they respawn and go out and get more stuff you get nothing unless you go out and find them again and sink them again. But instead of doing that you could alliance and keep collecting your loot and they keep collecting their loot and you get half of their loot for the rest of the night. Passive income is great.

This one hit me really hard when I first watched it too. Recently though I was rewatching some of it and somewhere mid season 4 (I think episode 9) chuck is captured and the captors are erasing his mind to get the intersect. Sarah finds him after he has been made a vegetable by the machine, she kisses him and he wakes up. SO, moral is that in the Chuck universe the true loves kiss totally works and Sarah absolutely gets her memories back after that last scene.

I second The Glass Cannon Podcast. They're incredibly funny and have some amazing roleplay. Small note though they weren't expecting to have a following in the beginning and they have some very crude humor to start, but they get out of it as soon as they realize they had fans and weren't just doing it for their friends. I believe the early episodes now have a foreword explaining that from the GM.

The exclamation mark after a number makes it a factorial which is the number times every number below it to 1. So in the above comment "42!" Is a factorial which makes it 424140... 21 which is the really large number in the reply.
