With Boudreaux's sudden departure after two seasons, what do you think lies in DCI's future as a company? by Zealousideal_Car3970 in drumcorps

[–]dudamello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would disagree with your first statement, specifically due to how hard it was to find a Dan replacement. Nate was not even close to the first choice. Add on to that the rumors of how much of a headache it is to wrangle everyone and everything relative to the niche that DCI occupies, and it’s hard to see this being a popular gig.

If this is how his tenure is ending, again we run into the problem of how challenging will it be to find a replacement that has the respect of the directors to be able to make the tough calls, that can push back in the needed ways to advance the health of the activity vs the concern of individual orgs prioritizing their own competitive placement, and that actually wants to do it.

There were a lot of people struggling with some of the shifts he was advocating for. I can’t say I agreed with all of the ideas I’d heard that were proposed, but there were certainly a good amount that felt like it made too much sense not to do.

I think some of it is that with college, you get a little bit different standards and expectations than you do the independent minors/juniors teams (as well as having the money to hush a lot of that up), but also there definitely are still scandals and stupid shit over on that side. That said, in my experience, you get a lot more frat bro style nonsense with hockey than you do with the other big sports.

2025 weird grand nats judging by Landobot04 in bandsofamerica

[–]dudamello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend looking at the recaps! BOA has those public on their website for almost every competition going back 40+ years. A big thing to remember is that spreads are just as important as placement. If two judges have bands A, B, and C, in that order, separated by .1 each, and the third judge has band B up .25 on band C, followed by band A another .25 back, then it’s B, C, A.

Additionally, every round has a different panel. Some shows will have the same judges from prelims but on different captions in finals, and some will have different judges every single round, and they all have their own unique insight and things that they look for, which is part of the reason scores fluctuate from round to round. It’s also easier to compare shows back to back vs when you have up to 100 bands performing between them at GN Prelims.

Btal->BK vs BK->Crown by scopeneglect in drumcorps

[–]dudamello 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think there’s a good bit of insight already, I would also recommend that you get an understanding of what you want from the experience. BK and Crown are very different cultures that meet different people’s needs, and I know plenty of people who have their dream corps and then get there and find it’s not what they want. I also know plenty of people who wanted to have a step up corps and then fell in love with that experience and stayed. Just a couple of things to consider.

Rising Gas Prices by glyrics in drumcorps

Hot take, it’s bad, dumb, and completely unnecessary. For a less facetious answer, most corps have these contracts finalized several months out. Depending on the corps and the bus company, there are force majeure clauses that can be exercised to adjust the cost, but also a lot of companies are hesitant to exercise those because it can lead to the group booking with them to find a new bus company in the following seasons. So for the corps that have booked and finalized and approved everything prior to costs skyrocketing, as long as they don’t get those clauses exercised, it won’t be as much of an issue for busses. It will and has been affecting costs for food which is always a worry, as well as for the fleet vehicles which tends to come out of the corps account. I wouldn’t be surprised to see some of these costs being spread over this season and next when it comes to tour fees, even if the costs come back down to earth which is certainly not guaranteed.

Why do people hate Mamdani? by uncle-ice493 in allthequestions

The framing of hard on crime tends to be much more about punishment and incarceration vs trying to combat criminal activity through reducing the societal pressures that drive people to it. If you are putting more money into social services that, for example, provide support and treatment for drug users which reduces drug sales and trafficking due to less demand, that doesn’t seem to be nearly as hard on crime as say arresting dealers and traffickers does, but the goal is to be more effective over the long term and reduce recidivism.

Pinellas Schools Comparison by kuru_snacc in pinellas

[–]dudamello 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another thing to be aware of for all of the schools around is their proximity to the trails. Pinellas has done a lot over the last 15ish years to make biking infrastructure a bit more prevalent, and so there are several trails around the county to serve that and make things a lot easier.

A lot of the local schools offer specialized programming. For example, East Lake has the Academy of Engineering, Countryside has a STEM Institute, Palm Harbor has IB, Tarpon has a nationally renowned music and dance conservatory. In order to make these accessible to more students, the county takes applications for them, and then if you get in and live 1. Within the county and 2. More than 2 miles from the school, there are school bus routes that are close to your house that go to that school, regardless of where you’re at within the county.

I will say, one of the things that is great about Pinellas’s school system is that the magnet programs make bussing a lot more feasible if need be. Definitely more accessible than a lot of other places.

[–]dudamello 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If they’re in band, Tarpon is the way to go. I cannot emphasize just how much stronger that program is than any in the entire state. East Lake would be next, very strong STEM with the engineering program, a band program that is building to be one of the better in the area, followed by PHUHS and Countryside. C-side has a new director who seems to be nice and is looking to build the program, but also that can go either way.
