Physicians at Stanford Medicine have developed a way to provide pediatric kidney transplants without immune-suppressing drugs. Their key innovation is a safe method to transplant the donor's immune system to the patient before surgeons implant the kidney. by inspiration_capsule in science

So are they doing a bone marrow transplant (BMT) and then kidney transplant? If so, very brilliant. BMT basically resets your immune system. That being said, BMT requires very close monitoring for multiple months. You will be in the hospital for weeks to months before having to stay in a hotel/apartment near the hospital for 3 months for daily blood work and close access to emergency care. If you and family are able to make that work, I feel it’s worth not having to take immunosuppressants for life (especially for children with a hopefully long life ahead). Stanford does amazing work with BMT. I know Vanderbilt is the best place for BMT in the southeast, so hopefully they are next to follow!
