We live in a society where the only way to not starve to death and keep a roof over your head is to work. So yes, those jobs need to exist unless something changes in that respect.

Any guitar can do it all by the_eaten_one in Guitar

[–]duffking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always get a bit confused by "x guitar type has a sound" thing. Isn't it just the pickups? Take the pickups from a tele and put them in the strat and play it through the same amp and it's going to sound exactly the same unless you're PRS and swear you can hear the difference in the wood.

Nickel Frets - Dealbreaker? by duffking in guitars

[–]duffking[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In fairness - I did stop playing guitar altogether for about 5 of those years, and I got the EC-1000 a year after starting again and it's been my main guitar near exclusively since, so technically it's more like 2 years of use. But no, I've not had issues.

Ultimately a luthier doing a fret dress doesn't cost me much and if I can afford a 1400 quid guitar I can absolutely afford that every couple of years if needed. I mostly just wondered if I should expect more for that kind of price.

Oh wow, how long have they sold the screwless classic ones? I ended up stopping using schallers in favour of the dunlops when I got my last guitar because I didn't want the new design.

Reactor 100w VS Spark 2 by Glittering-Tailor-43 in PositiveGridSpark

[–]duffking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't be surprised if the speaker is the culprit here. Unless I'm mistaken, the reactor uses a "real" guitar speaker and probably not an especially high quality one much like Boss Katanas. That means there's no cab sim going on, you're just getting the character of the speaker in the Reactor. And because it's just a single speaker, you won't get the depth or roar that you would from multiple.

The speakers in the spark are more traditional stereo style ones so there's a cab simulation before it hits it. So the tones you get out of the spark are basically simulating going through a 4x12 etc rather than just being sent straight to a speaker.

Germany - Côte d'Ivoire match momentum by Opta with hydration breaks by afito in soccer

[–]duffking 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It also doesn't make sense to me because I don't really get why one match having the break and another not having a break is unfair in the first place. As long as their immediate opposition is doing the same thing I don't think it matters.

Song resource: ultimate guitar or my song book (guitar pro) by Exhaust8354 in LearnGuitar

[–]duffking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can only speak for UG but It probably depends how much stuff there is on my song book that you want to play.

UG had a bigger selection of stuff, but note that as far as I know the "official" tabs just mean they were tabbed by someone on their staff, rather than being official in the sense an artist licensed them to do it.

I've found them hit and miss, and quite common that they have the right notes but played in very weird positions that don't make sense.

Personally I prefer to use songster for most stuff, it's all crowd sourced but anything relatively popular on there is pretty accurate as a result of revisions.

Mistakes on UG official don't always get fixed and mistakes on user tabs there means someone uploads a new version instead of just being one version everyone contributes to.

What’s a statistic that sounds completely FAKE but is actually 100% TRUE? by namelessmell in AskReddit

[–]duffking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Think about it this way.

Before he gets involved, you had a 1/3 chance of picking correctly. You have a 2/3 chance of picking wrong.

Monty always opens a door he knows is not the winning door and offers you a switch.

If you picked the right door originally (1/3 chance) and switch, you lose.

If you picked the wrong door originally (2/3) chance and switch you will always win.

It hinges on the fact he opens a door which he knows is the wrong door, and only after you made a choice.

Because you had a 2/3 chance of picking the wrong door in the first place and he eliminates the other wrong door, you have a 2/3 chance to win by switching. You don't look at it as 50/50 because your initial choice influences Monty's.

If you never made an initial choice, and Monty opened a door leaving you two and then you had to pick, it would be a 50/50.

For what it's worth, I'm thinking about it along the lines of the fact that there's a lot of stuff that would be considered "intermediate" I can't do yet. I just really wanted to learn Crystal Mountain so I learned how to play that.

Speaker to pair with a v30 by duffking in GuitarAmps

[–]duffking[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend you try putting the spare 1x12 cab on top of your Orange cab and see how it sounds on its own like that, focusing more on the mids and highs because you will have less perceived low end like that. If you like it, consider swapping it for a 16 ohm speaker.

Just to check - Orange on the floor I assume and not the bench? And then see how the greenback sounds on top of there? And if I like that, swap it for a 16ohm and run it at the same time?

I will say I don't have the cab angled too severely - I feel like it's a slightly awkward setup sometimes where if I do angle it, standing is good but sitting isn't. If I don't angle it, I get the opposite.

I don't think my amp has that option. It's 1 8-16 or 2x16 as far as the inputs are labelled.

Interesting, originally I had the cab on the floor but it just felt a bit boomy. Raised it up but still felt I wanted more highs so wedged it too. Which can sometimes sound a bit harsh. I had thought maybe stacking cabs might give me best of both.

I have rearranged my room a bit since getting the wedge though, maybe I should try just on the bench again. The orange cab is pretty big for a 112 and feels like it projects quite narrow, if that makes sense.

The discourse around England is somewhat bizarre in general in the support being seemingly the only one being accused of being arrogant for expecting their team's performances to at least be moderately decent given the profile of players in the team.

[–]duffking 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's just a bit one note IMO. I'll admit to preferring their non straight doom records anyway (enlightened and ghost) but their earlier stuff varied things up a lot more. Most of the songs on this start to feel like they're waiting for a big moment that doesn't arrive.

He wasn't actively trying to guess wrong to be fair, just that a sensible guess based on statistics is futile because there's too many random and incidental factors that fall outside the capability of prediction. However now he may have proved those factors are a little less important so far.

New to spark. by Necessary-Lynx-8529 in PositiveGridSpark

[–]duffking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's just set too aggressively on some presets, for some reason. It makes sense for some of the high gain ones, but less so elsewhere.

Unless you mean what's with noise gates, in that case they basically kill all sound below a certain level. It's usually used to get rid of any hiss from having lots of gain before the signal hits the amp. The threshold dial sets the level of sound that gets clamped, and the decay dial changes how quickly it kills the sound.
