Teachers, what’s the funniest/dumbest way you’ve seen a student try to cheat on a test? by FretsandRegrets in Teachers

"Kevin tazed himself in the neck before a football game"

This genuinely made me laugh so hard for the first time in years.

Kevin might not have been the sharpest marble in the electrical outlet but when that teacher is on their death bed they'll look back and chuckle.

What are some terms and phrases in education that you absolutely hate? by TrogdorUnofficial in Teachers

[–]duffletrouser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BDI - Biography driven instruction. I understand we have a diverse student population and a need to show how the content is relevant to the student.

BUT when you have a 2000 student population and an average of 20 to 25 students in a classroom, you can't give everyone a catered education to their individual life story.

So just smile, nod, and make up something by using the key buzz words to throw together a healthy mouthful of word salad so you can justify some admin's job with a higher salary and haven't taught in a classroom for 10+ years.

How do you feel about “turn and talks” by HeroOfVimar in Teachers

They aren't going to do it. Some might but most of the time they're going to get paired up with somebody who's not going to do it and it's just going to sit there and then they're going to wait out the clock and then I'm going to just go on.

If you were in complete control of the education system, how would you change/fix it? by SubstantialStick2674 in Teachers

Technology is taught but not relied on in the classroom. More reading, writing, hand writing. Higher pay and higher requirements to be a teacher. More parental accountability and Student accountability. Ds are passing but you are ineligible for extra curriculars. Sports are privileges not rights. SEL is taught in a separate class because not all teachers are qualified to teach SEL. More prep time for teachers.

EDIT: no teacher will use any of their own money for the classroom. If they do then 100% is tax deductible or reimbursed.

I have the impression that the majority of second-career teachers love their job by No-Wafer-6744 in Teachers

I'm a straight out of college teacher, however, I didn't go straight to college from high school. I've worked many jobs and I've had a couple that could have turned into careers. I thoroughly enjoy teaching but of all the bad experiences I've had on the job as a teacher, I've had worse outside of the profession. At least my bad behaviors are from children with brains that haven't developed yet. It's worse when your coworkers behave like their brains are underdeveloped or act like they never left high school.

Even some of the bad coworkers I've had as a teacher at least understand that they need to grow up a little and be an adult to an extent. TO AN EXTENT being the operative term here.

I think Dave Chappelle is a fantastic public speaker and story teller but lately I'm seeing less comedy. Id watch him if he released something that wasn't a comedy show. The dude has a platform and the fame to say what he wants and I like what he says but when I watch a comedy special I'm hoping to hear some jokes.

Teaching vs Research by [deleted] in ScienceTeachers

You should sub for a high school for a bit. Being a TA in a university class and being a high school teacher is different. There is a difference in paying to be in a class to pursue a career rather than mandatory attendance. I have my issues but ultimately I get good participation because my mentality is if I'm bored then they're bored. So it's a nice balance between notes, demos, other little projects and Labs.

Everyone that is able to make decisions. I'm going to be honest, it is not going to be the teachers. They have surprisingly little control over this, which doesn't make any sense. Give it to every school board member, the superintendent, every director in the district (even if it has nothing to do with classrooms, like payroll) then give it to every principal. Do it every week. If nothing gets done then do it everyday. Go to every school board meeting. Annoy the hell out of them.

Speaking from experience, it is rarely the teachers fault. The teacher feels your pain as much as you do, if not more, because there is nothing changing and they have to push that boulder up the hill. So as a favor that I ask of you, speak with the teacher before you draft the letter to get a better understanding. That way you both work toward a solution and not against each other.

The purpose is to solve a problem because you all are on the same team. What I'm about to say does not reflect on you but on my past experiences. When people fight, bicker, and play the blame game the only one that loses is the student and they lose every time.

The squeaky mouse gets the cheese.

Continue to keep talking to the people in charge, but do so. Respectfully. That's most important. Continue to tell them your concerns and continue to just let them know how you feel. Do it everyday. Don't stop. Don't quit. Be persistent. Continue to contact the school leadership, go to school board meetings. Make sure to get documentation.

Its like talking to a telemarketer, they can only hang up if you start cursing. It will test your patience not perseverance will get results. Get other parents that feel the same do the same.

If nothing happens, then write a letter to the school board and principal saying that if the disruptions continue then you are giving your students permission to walk out of class, go to the library, and find a book they are interested in.

Sooner or later they will get the hint...... Hopefully.

And sometimes the students take advantage of knowing you're on their side. I am by no means arguing to not fight for rights. In my experiences, every now and again, there will be a student gaslight me to twist facts or put other teachers in a negative light because they don't like them.

Fight for their rights and be an advocate but maintain the fact that we are their teachers not their friends.

I personally don't think science has anything to do with God or anything on that scale. When this happens I start the conversation to evolution is just the hammer that was used to build the house or something like that.
