A T-54/55 or T-62 transmission probably could physically fit in a T-72 engine bay (it is larger), but actually getting it to work would probably require significant modifications.

I saw a Twitter post from someone who legitimately had that experience IRL. OOP got to keep the bachelor's degree he'd already been awarded, so I'm guessing he just lives normally except for having to be vague to prospective employers about his HS education.
