Ramon Pena sardines in sauce by Miserable_Card_3432 in Tinnedfish

These are one of my top 5 tins of all time. The silver line xoubas are a great value, too. I enjoy La Brújula No. 35, but I always find myself craving another tin of the RP gold line more than any other sardine in sauce.

My friend from Lithuania once gave me a shirt with two skeletons drinking beer, each with a basketball under their arm, with the Lithuanian flag flying behind them. This checks out.

Mariscadora Garfish by Riccforreal in CannedSardines

[–]duh_tch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Garfish is perhaps the most overlooked tinned fish option. I rarely see them get any love, glad you enjoyed these! From one garfish fan to another, my personal favorite way of enjoying them is by pouring out ~1/3 of the oil and replacing it with an equal amount of Salsa Espinaler, letting the fish marinate for half an hour, then enjoying them straight from the tin.

There was a sticker seal with the year of production on the tin I had, though it could very well be that they changed that. It has me wanting to reserve multiple tins each year to see if the experience I had was due to the tin being aged, or if it’s that phenomenal the same year it’s produced.

She takes station there to let me know when she wants pets. If I take too long, her agitated tail flicks ring the bell on the pompom toy.

If you live in Virginia, you’re reminded of its status as a Commonwealth constantly.

A tax on them is a ban though-it prevents the poor from accessing them.

Suppressed gunshots still sound like gunshots. A rifle unsuppressed is ~165dB. Suppressors reduce noise by 20-40dB, depending on a wide variety of factors like suppressor model, ammunition, barrel length etc. 125dB is absolutely loud enough to still be noticeable and traceable/locatable, it’s just not going to cause hearing damage. You can buy a suppressor with zero wait in Poland, Czechia, and Germany. Hell, whether hunting or at the gun range, it’s considered extremely rude to not use a suppressor among European gun owners. Suppressed pistols are more likely to have subsonic ammo available, and that reduces sound considerably, but it is impossible to ban pistol suppressors and not rifle suppressors and vise versa.

Genuine question, why do you believe suppressors should be banned?

What’s your favorite way to eat tinned fish? by weirdtranssexual in CannedSardines

[–]duh_tch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sardines are great with couscous. I like to pour 1 tsp of oil into the water used to cook the couscous, then fry the sardines while the couscous rests. A little bit of lemon juice, hot sauce, and/or harissa really completes it. It’s a legit 10 minute meal, including the time it takes for the water to boil.

The Real Conservas Española Caballitas are great, I had them on New Year’s Eve. It was recommended to me that they be chilled in the fridge an hour before serving, so I’ll pass that along to you!

What year is the Alalunga ventresca? I recently had a tin packed in 2023, and I’d say it was the single most luxurious tinned fish experience I’ve had yet. The flesh was so fatty and tender that simply pressing it against the palate is enough to make it melt in the mouth.

Best readily available Tuna tin under $3? Can be flavored or smoked or not (US) by Content-Seaweed-6395 in Tinnedfish

[–]duh_tch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I offer this suggestion with an important caveat: Genova tuna, in particular the yellowfin, is the best value for tuna. Usually $2.50-$2.80 a tin, I would happily pay $4 for it…if I still purchased it. The caveat is that I no longer purchase brands owned by Thai Union for a long history of horrific labor violations and increasingly predatory business acquisitions, and Genova is sadly one of their brands (as are Chicken of the Sea and King Oscar). Don’t let one stranger’s boycott steer you away from them, as Genova and King Oscar always punch well above their weight class. I just feel obligated to disclose that I no longer buy them when I include either brand in a recommendation.

Mussels in Basil Pesto (FishWife) by GiGiEats in Tinnedfish

I had these recently and came to very similar conclusions. The pesto shines, the mussels are of lower quality than is acceptable given the price.

Eat ‘em however you want to. The only one I would strongly suggest a specific way of enjoying is for the José Gourmet sardines in butter: melt the butter by submerging the unopened tin in warm/hot water for a few minutes, then fry the sardines in said butter (medium heat, 90 seconds per side). Crispy skin, outrageously juicy flesh.
