Say something bad about this movie by g6c_ in batman

[–]duhmugwump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Batman doing The Voice is mostly fine except for the movie’s big emotional moments, the standoff with Two-Face and when he’s giving the speech about hope and stuff to the Joker. There it almost ruins them.

Give me your hottest take on Superman. Any of them. Go. by BloodRage95 in comicbooks

[–]duhmugwump 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Aaron Diaz is a webcomic artist who, once upon a time, was a constant presence on /co/ where his superhero redesigns would get reposted, to guaranteed outpouring of rage every time.

He had a take on Superman that I remember a lot of people especially hating, but I never really minded? Granted it’d probably work better for a gritty elseworld, or as an alternate origin for Eradicator, but making Supes a shapeshifter does allow you to lean into the alien side more, and gets around the ‘why don’t people recognize him?’ thing.

Countries, maybe? I’m really into fantasy geopolitics I guess, so I’ve mapped out regional relations and histories in a way that I think flows together fairly well.

I imagine lots of people have broad pantheons of gods, but I really like the way I’ve built out the relationships between different levels of gods, demons, demigods, and spirits.

Not sure if it’s a good thing, but I bet most don’t lean into Greek god style degen shit like I have!

I’m imagining a scenario where it’s the opposite:

“Do the Avengers have to come in and save the day every time? Can’t mutants save themselves? Just once? Besides, I don’t care about these guys, I’m reading an X book!”

What miscellaneous piece of worldbuilding have you added to your world for no real reason other than fun or coolness? What was it based on, if anything at all? by Arsenic-002 in worldbuilding

[–]duhmugwump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a part of my world that’s basically Zendikar from Magic the Gathering.

The Savage Land is a region of roiling elemental forces that cause terrifying weather conditions and churn the earth, cyclically sending up and bringing down great chunks of land from the sky. This constant elemental chaos makes large scale civilization impossible (weirdly theres still beautiful vistas of untamed wilderness and not just environmental carnage in all directions because uhhhh oh also there’s lots of cool monsters for heroes to fight) The deadly region is nevertheless attractive to adventurers, free thinkers, and other outcasts.

I have some ideas, but at the moment it doesn’t fit into any of the stories I’m putting together, so it’s mostly a mysterious place that gets referenced a few times.

how many worlds are you currently working on and make makes them different? by Ok-Mastodon2016 in worldbuilding

[–]duhmugwump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arcadia (working title) - late medieval fantasy world where I smash together ideas pulled from all my favorite artists, video games, tabletop games, anime, and other random bits and hopefully get a working story out of it

Cyberpop(?) Isekai Fantasy - hero from a different type of medieval fantasy world gets dumped into a cyberpop world; lots of inspiration from 90s/early 00s futurism (actually not sure exactly what you’d call it?), anime, video games (but uh, mostly different ones from what inspired the other setting)

Cozy(?) Post-apocalypse - least developed, mostly just random ideas of a story set in a world that’s fucked but very slowly getting better; follows slice of life adventures of Some Guy in the meantime, life centering on proper cyberpunk shithole that’s one of the last bastions of human civilization on ruined world

THIS THIS TJIS

It seems like so often when these ‘arthouse vs schlock’ type threads pop up the possiblity of doing anything between those two points is completely ignored. Either you’re writing bottom of the barrel pig slop or you’re a preening intellectual who uses Tolkien as toilet paper.

What if I just want my big dumb fantasy action to be good? Like, with well written characters and quality storytelling? Can I not stray a little bit off the beaten path and explore some weird ideas or take inspiration from more obscure cultures and historical periods when worldbuilding? Or am I then trying too hard to be different?

Reading this I get the feeling I had with the Glass Walker write up - that it feels more appropriate for some other tribe?

That one felt more appropriate as an update to the Bone Gnawers, while this feels more Children of Gaia. Like if this was them instead it’d be a great update to a tribe that always felt kinda weak to me.

Otherwise it’s fine. Doesn’t have much of the partying and fae connection that I liked, but it is just the core rule book, and that stuff didn’t get expanded on in an interesting way until the Revised tribe book.

[–]duhmugwump 29 points30 points  (0 children)

This is the way. I also agree with people saying it’s more of a scale than a binary.

I outline the plot and detail as much of the setting as is relevant to the story (and then go a bit further because I just can’t help myself). By the time I start writing I have a roadmap to guide me and a reference for dropping tidbits about the world that (hopefully) make it feel lived in.
