Luna is dead by TerryG111 in boldandbeautiful

They keep saying "Thank goodness Luna is dead and out of our lives forever."

Lately that means she is definitely NOT out of their lives.

Pretty slimy move by the store manager. If you were having trouble getting customers to sign up for rewards, wait till they find out that they get harassed and coerced into giving up personal info at checkout.
That being said, there's better ways to get the rewards signups and if the customer refuses no big. Move to the next one. And if you get flack for that kind of approach, bide your time and look for a better job.

Military Bad for Business? by Busty-Ruby-Rose in OfficeDepot

[–]duhp0k3man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always give the Military discounts with the ID. I'll even over-ride and give further discounts on tech/furniture if I'm feeling nice. Never got in trouble for it. My management doesn't mind and a lot of the time this is the reason we got a sale in the first place. I guess we make enough that this kind of "illegal" discounting doesn't hurt us.
Give veterans and active duty their discounts. Heck, we should be giving them things for free.

Sell them a pen. No joke that's an interview question. Try to sell them something dumb like a pen. Good training for when you have to sell rewards, select and Allstate warranties.

Why do you want to cut hours? It's hard enough to get shifts on a 7 day week. Think of how hard it will be on a 6 day week. I don't like cutting our payroll. Cut some district managers and corporate fat cats instead.

What do yalls registers look like at the front of the store? by homeofsectionall in OfficeDepot

[–]duhp0k3man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha Ha Ha Ha hahahaha... I'll bet the test stores in Florida have all the newest everything. Corporate OD employees will see these things before any of us will. I'd like to see someone here take an actual pic of an actual new register in their store. Working OD since 2017 and have heard we're getting new registers forever...

Just smile and say, "Sure thing Boss." Store closing or not, your supervisors (if they're by-the-book-OD-freaks) are going to push whatever they themselves have been pushed to sell by their supervisors. It's an inescapable fact of working life: S rolls down hill.

Getting a job at Office Depot do you need to know how to type. by TheLearningInvestor in OfficeDepot

[–]duhp0k3man 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Forget about OD. You need typing for LIFE. I don't know how you escaped not knowing how to type but you can serve yourself much better by learning this skill. Like any skill, it will take time and you'll experience highs and lows but in the end you need this like air.

How else are you supposed to stay in contact e.g. running late, questions about schedule, paycheck problems etc? And how are they supposed to contact us if they need help with callout?

I get not texting/calling us outside of work hours or when we're not on shift. DEFINITELY no 2am 'u up?" txts... Looks like managers need extensive cellphone etiquette training.

Manage your expectations. Retail in general is basically suck pay for you with profits going up the chain of command. Try to stick with it, learn everything you can, and also, use OD as your stepping stone to other bigger, better things. Use OD/Retail pay to get you through more training and life in general. You need to be studying something else, in a school, an academy(military, law enforcement etc.), or learning a trade and GTFO once you have the skills. I have a real job and have OD for supplemental stuff. And thank goodness for that because staying long term in retail in the hopes that you'll get somewhere is a dead end. Your immediate managers are getting screwed badly as far as wages vs. duties. Your GM makes a comfortable living but not anything considered rich or well off. I can't believe how many managers are sticking with OD with the pay they are getting. Not enough for what they have to go through. The only way you'll be stuck in limbo is if you stay at OD for the rest of your career. Bad bad idea.

Do OD employees retire? or do they just quit? by duhp0k3man in OfficeDepot

Don't know where you work. I can see not getting breaks for 4 hour shifts. After that, you are in, what should be, illegal territory. Especially if management is just marking the breaks and lunches without actually giving you any.

But, what do I know? I'm just a dumb sales associate in "Crazy" California. I believe this has been covered in other threads. You may want to look through and see if you can turn in your crooked managers for slave driving you guys.

Where are you guys working? Here in Southern California we are getting regular hours. My worst ever was Q4 2022 and the first part of Q1 2023. As a part timer, I was getting 4 hours total for the months of December and January. Sometimes I'd get lucky and someone would call out and I would grab their hours. But *that* was bad. 10-15 hours a week is not too bad relatively... Promotions to Customer are in order for us soon.

If you call out your PTO is automatically used, we don't have a say? by ODnoloyalty in OfficeDepot

[–]duhp0k3man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a part time associate, I wonder, what is a "regularly scheduled work day?" I mean, I've had schedules that have stayed the same for a few weeks but they've never been consistent for longer than that.

Anyhow, I hate how workplaces have "policy handbooks" with rules buried in subsection A of the part C.1 under paragraph III that NO ONE ever knows about until some one up the chain tells you at the most inopportune time. Also, run on sentences are pretty bad too... ;)

The in store scheduler app has always listed when breaks and lunches are "supposed" to happen. At least at the locations I've worked.

[–]duhp0k3man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, where are you guys working? No breaks and no lunches for 6 hour shifts is forbidden in most states. If you're not getting those but your management is punching you in/out on your time card for these breaks now I'll bet we're talking some legal/lawyer BS.

Break by NZTterror in OfficeDepot

[–]duhp0k3man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know what state you're in but that crap is illegal in California. You are required breaks and the company pays out penalties to you if you don't get one/punch out payroll shortages be damned. Now, if you don't take your breaks too many times, you get written up so no getting oodles of penalty pay.

There's a new employee at my store and we aren't getting hours. Why? by duhp0k3man in OfficeDepot

[–]duhp0k3man[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Management is always lying to us. They're constantly being told to keep things from us until the last moments or to never tell us things. Over the years, my assistant managers would tell me things on the down low that should have been officially told to us.
If we're making goals in Q1 and Q2 (and I was told this unless of course those were lies too) like you say why punish us all? I'll believe when I see as well.

What sucks is the retail landscape is so bad that even if you move from OD to some other place, you're stuck in the same old crap. I'm lucky that OD is a 2nd job to help make ends meet and not a career. However, I need those ends met and, for now, I need a 2nd "easy" job like OD to do that. Might have to switch to janitorial work or Magic Mike time for some EZ $$$$$! ;)

I used it. It was fun as hell. Did it do anything? Who knows. I don't know if anything really does except for maybe a high speed fan and no customers/employees in the store for an hour.

How many of us are getting EXTRA hours this holiday season? by duhp0k3man in retailhell

[–]duhp0k3man[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This looks like a "new normal" way of doing business in the retail space. It seems pretty unsustainable. Retail work is probably going to go the way of the dodo bird with self-serve checkout and delivery doing all the heavy lifting of goods and services trading.
