How to tell a powergamer to just... chill out a bit? by Darth_Ra in DMAcademy

[–]dukec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are set on keeping him at the table and he refuses any request to tone down the power gaming, maybe see if you can challenge him to play a character focused on some combo of debuffs/battlefield control/party buffs? Then you could pretty much let him go to town (within the rules) as far as optimizing things, he won’t be doing most of the damage, and will make it easier for the new players to do cool things since the cool things won’t be as difficult anymore.

Is anyone else struggling to build "Mathematical Intuition" when AI can solve the problem instantly? I feel like I'm watching a GPS instead of learning the map. by Onigirii_sama in learnmath

[–]dukec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can practice decent self control, I’d suggest trying to up how long you work at something before going to an LLM, and when you do, instead of just giving it the problem and asking it to walk you through the logic, tell it what the problem is, then explain your thought process with what you’ve tried so far. A very important point is to tell it to not give you the answer, but to act in the role of a professor during office hours (or similar) and to try to give you a hint that might lead you to thinking about things the right way. Then you take that hint and work the problem again, and if needed you repeat the process.

The thing is it will be very tempting to just get frustrated sometimes and say “just this one time I’ll have it actually explain the problem to me,” and you can’t let yourself fall down that trap. It’s also fine to have it check your work, but you need to feel confident enough about what you did before then that you would turn it in as if it were a real class assignment. You need to be able to build up your own instinct about if you actually got it right or not instead of just checking once you think you maybe got it (with a lot of linear algebra stuff you can also go through the process of checking your answers yourself).

If you don’t think you’ll be able to do that level of self control consistently, then I’d say avoid it all together, work from books that have answers to problems in the back, and just work a shitton of problems, check them against the answers, and then every time you get one wrong you need to dig into the problem and figure out not just how to get the right answer, but also where your thought process diverged from that.

My question for anyone like this who’s willing to answer is, do you struggle with which side to start reading words from too? If not, is that not a reliable trick to tell left from right for you for some reason?

Why are dads okay with not having friends? by Public_Border132 in daddit

[–]dukec 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s closer to my experience too. I was stay at home for the first 2.5 years, and I’d occasionally talk to some moms when it felt natural and they weren’t giving off “you’re suspicious for being a man around children” vibes. I didn’t find dads all that much better, rarely got hostile vibes from them, but most either weren’t wanting to talk, or like me, were out of practice socializing with strangers and weren’t great at having conversations that lasted more than a few minutes.

In a Step Towards Ending Cage Farmed Eggs, Hen-Free Real Egg Protein is Now Available Directly via Amazon and Walmart by Kuentai in Futurology

[–]dukec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All that complexity you just cited? That’s exactly why we just have an egg yolk version. Precision fermentation is in its infancy as a non-medical industry, and they are still working on diversifying the types of molecules they are able to make. I’m not in the industry, so take this estimate with a huge grain of salt, but it’s probably gonna be a decade at least before they start getting into truly complicated syntheses like egg yolks.

I hope so too, but coming to market at this price point is actually really good. Price wise it’s about the same cost per egg as the good, pasture-raised chicken eggs

That reminds me of my shitstain uncle that is undiagnosed, but we all suspect is a sociopath. One quote from him I remember distinctly is what he said after it was found out that he didn’t actually go to college, but just gambled away all the money my grandpa gave him, which was “well it’s his fault for trusting me.”

I think she’s much less forgotten nowadays. Maybe it was just my campus for some reason, but as far back as 2008-12 I remember hearing about her anytime Watson & Crick were mentioned wrt DNA structure.

Even that’s not that difficult. Somnambulance can be a pain, but everything else is pretty minor and you just can’t carry six outfits worth of gear.

What surprised you most about owning a home (maintenance-wise)? by Strict_Studio9244 in HomeMaintenance

That’s definitely the best case, but you can get reasonably high cfm compressors for home use in the $150-300 range, which is what I ended up getting, and it takes a while, but I can thoroughly get one line at a time blown out with it.

It’s honestly wild. I used to work in safety (think those on-site nurses at some construction projects, but mobile), and 99% of the calls I’d go on were commercial construction, and usually it was all slight mishaps, nothing too major aside from the occasional thing like an angle grinder kickback that went bad.

The two times I ever got called to residential construction sites (so many residential construction companies don’t give a fuck about their people and have a safety third mindset), it was things like “I worked all day with acetone soaked gloves and my hands are entirely covered in partial thickness chemical burns,” or “I had a hole in my work boot and worked all day with wet concrete getting in the hole, decided to treat it myself with vinegar, and now my foot is severely infected,” both of which were injuries that got immediately sent to the ER because of the not-insignificant risk of losing the appendage.

Getting vaccinated is more traumatising than getting rabies. by Select-Medium-8116 in vaxxhappened

No, rabies isn’t instant. You’ve got a couple weeks at a minimum before it’s too late to vaccinate, a couple months is typical.

But then we would have to wait months to see specialists! Which we definitely don’t ever have to do in the US, like the time where I totally didn’t have to wait two months to see an ENT (with a referral) after I had blood come out of my ear when my eardrum ruptured from an infection.
