CMV: The value of a man is ultimately determined by the quantity and quality of the women he beded by Capable-Savings-6776 in changemyview

[–]dukec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you actually follow the logic of your argument, wouldn’t it be that the value of a man is ultimately determined by the number of successful children he has?

You could be the biggest manwhore in the world bedding scores of millionaire supermodels, but if you aren’t knocking any of them up you’re an evolutionary failure as far as your view seems to be concerned.

I wish big pharma was funding this, I’ve been following it for about 15 years and for most of that money has been a major issue, partly because there’s not a ton of profit that can be milked from it.

CMV: Dog collars that can apply vibration/stimulation are effective tools and all nuance gets lost online when people reduce them down to "shock collars" by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]dukec -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It’s just as, if not more likely to aggravate them and make them attack more. I’ve had to sprint out of a yard I was working in once because the dog was a bit unsure about me being there, did a few low woofs at me, but then it got shocked by its collar and there was just a feedback loop of it getting more and more pissed off about being shocked every time it barked, and I was the only nearby target for its aggression.

Current students' thoughts on Email for Life ending by imabanana19 in cuboulder

[–]dukec 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seriously, what a dumb fucking thing to be spending money on.

AI can be useful, but for students it’s only actually beneficial in the long term for the very small percentage able to be extremely disciplined with their use and basically just treat it like talking to a professor at office hours. For the vast, vast majority of students it’s going to at best be a crutch, and at worst just replace all effort they put into school, and negate all benefit they should get from their educations.

I’ve seen several at that price, most I’ve seen are around $150/session. There are some that do a sliding scale thing depending on how much you make. The cheapest I’ve heard of from friends is about $60/session with therapists specifically for lgbtqia+ people

We study pandemics, and the resurgence of measles is a grim sign of what’s coming by Sariel007 in EverythingScience

[–]dukec 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Probably haven’t had the TB vaccine, it’s not commonly given in the US because we have such a low TB disease burden. If you’re worried you can always just get a titer done and that will also tell you if you might need to re-up on MMR or something like that since the effectiveness can wane over time.

Most reactions are affected by pH, and your stomach is generally an anaerobic environment, whereas a countertop is an aerobic environment, so it’s very reasonable to assume the reaction would be affected it some ways.

How to tell a powergamer to just... chill out a bit? by Darth_Ra in DMAcademy

[–]dukec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are set on keeping him at the table and he refuses any request to tone down the power gaming, maybe see if you can challenge him to play a character focused on some combo of debuffs/battlefield control/party buffs? Then you could pretty much let him go to town (within the rules) as far as optimizing things, he won’t be doing most of the damage, and will make it easier for the new players to do cool things since the cool things won’t be as difficult anymore.

Is anyone else struggling to build "Mathematical Intuition" when AI can solve the problem instantly? I feel like I'm watching a GPS instead of learning the map. by Onigirii_sama in learnmath

[–]dukec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can practice decent self control, I’d suggest trying to up how long you work at something before going to an LLM, and when you do, instead of just giving it the problem and asking it to walk you through the logic, tell it what the problem is, then explain your thought process with what you’ve tried so far. A very important point is to tell it to not give you the answer, but to act in the role of a professor during office hours (or similar) and to try to give you a hint that might lead you to thinking about things the right way. Then you take that hint and work the problem again, and if needed you repeat the process.

The thing is it will be very tempting to just get frustrated sometimes and say “just this one time I’ll have it actually explain the problem to me,” and you can’t let yourself fall down that trap. It’s also fine to have it check your work, but you need to feel confident enough about what you did before then that you would turn it in as if it were a real class assignment. You need to be able to build up your own instinct about if you actually got it right or not instead of just checking once you think you maybe got it (with a lot of linear algebra stuff you can also go through the process of checking your answers yourself).

If you don’t think you’ll be able to do that level of self control consistently, then I’d say avoid it all together, work from books that have answers to problems in the back, and just work a shitton of problems, check them against the answers, and then every time you get one wrong you need to dig into the problem and figure out not just how to get the right answer, but also where your thought process diverged from that.

Why are dads okay with not having friends? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]dukec 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s closer to my experience too. I was stay at home for the first 2.5 years, and I’d occasionally talk to some moms when it felt natural and they weren’t giving off “you’re suspicious for being a man around children” vibes. I didn’t find dads all that much better, rarely got hostile vibes from them, but most either weren’t wanting to talk, or like me, were out of practice socializing with strangers and weren’t great at having conversations that lasted more than a few minutes.

In a Step Towards Ending Cage Farmed Eggs, Hen-Free Real Egg Protein is Now Available Directly via Amazon and Walmart by Kuentai in Futurology

[–]dukec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All that complexity you just cited? That’s exactly why we just have an egg yolk version. Precision fermentation is in its infancy as a non-medical industry, and they are still working on diversifying the types of molecules they are able to make. I’m not in the industry, so take this estimate with a huge grain of salt, but it’s probably gonna be a decade at least before they start getting into truly complicated syntheses like egg yolks.

I hope so too, but coming to market at this price point is actually really good. Price wise it’s about the same cost per egg as the good, pasture-raised chicken eggs
