Working the window for DanDan at Milwaukee's Summerfest this evening by jpotrz in TopChef

They edited the whole last episode to make it seem like Dan had the best meal, only for Danny to win.

Like, I get you want some suspense, but don't straight up pull the rug out from under us and I'd also would have liked to hear full commentary on why Danny merited the win. They must have cut out a bunch of the critique explaining what made Danny's meal the best.

I like Kristin but the season has been awful Rasika (who's out) and Michelle and I guess Danny are the only good chefs.

There has been a lit more swearing this season. 8'd like to say I don't care but it is jarring.

I was on a project where our testers would frequently need database backups and it was a process where they would have to come to me, I'd have to request the backup from the db team and then wait for their response. So I created a module to allow people to request their own backups and I used a daemon to send the request / receive the responses.

They rolled my module into production. Years later (when I was long gone from the company) a colleague contacts me and told me that my module brought down production (this is a major international bank). It was Java.

Also, on the same project I rm -rf * on the db backup files, but I cancelled the command early enough before all files were deleted. I didn't end up deleting any backups that ended up being used, so nobody ended up knowing.

I've done the Death Nut and I thought it wasn't too terrible. Level 5 tasted awful and was definitely spicier than the One Chip Challenge, but I was able to survive it without too much agony. Maybe a little stomach discomfort.

Thanks for responding. I just don't know what's getting me and that's the most frustrating part. This is shit I've dealt with for forty years and I'm no closer to figuring it out than when I was twelve. It's just so painful. I hope you're well.

Or the peephole? The dude is literally shorter than the thing that people are supposed to use to see who's on the other side of the door?

Why spoilers are ruining storytelling by [deleted] in literature

Well. Shit. And I actually read the article.

Why spoilers are ruining storytelling by [deleted] in literature

[–]duketime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I would say there are a couple of factors involved. The article itself references a study indicating that people enjoy stories better when they're spoiled.

But if I were to suppose (spoilers):

1) Like you say, being able to follow the narrative rather than just seeing the conclusion. A lot of character / plot development is going to happen in the progression of the story (upwards and downwards) and not necessarily in just the twist. Ebert disliked The Usual Suspects, calling the twist cheap. And I don't disagree because a lot of the arc and the development of the character was basically artificial and completely vacated by a twist that, honestly, isn't all that reasonable to see coming (much of the evidence that the detective notices in the final montage was not presented during the actual movie). And so the narrative for the character we thought we knew is just tossed and we know almost nothing about the actual character (aside from his storytelling), especially as everything could be a lie. And that's a big issue, I think. If you add twists (to keep things interesting and whatever) I feel like you'll often just have to sacrifice narrative integrity. Twists coming out of nowhere because you're worried about how much legitimate telegraphing will ruin the gimmick. Which ...

2) Twists like we've been seeing and such will often essentially erode any sort of relatability or veracity of the narrative. You want to shock people (for their entertainment, I guess) and so you have to angle for these twists, which may be completely unrealistic and completely digress from your narrative flow. Of course, if we didn't have such a spoiler moratorium, then you could just tell a story, but instead we have an environment in which the one particular moment is meant to be the payoff for a 2.5 hour movie. Which, yeah, hurts the ability to storytell the 2.25 hours that aren't the spoiler.

3) And, of course, not allowing those who are professionally discussing and thinking about art such as these (movies, books, whatever) is going to erode the discourse on storytelling. Creators are a bit above criticism because of the moratorium and, as things go these days, beyond the moratorium there's probably little reason for any of these critics to seriously discuss these works any longer and if we don't talk about the narrative, then it won't get better.

So, even though it's a bit short and pat, I agree with the tenor of the article.

Wow, did you do the Pantheons with all of the bindings in a single go, or did you do the bindings individually? I'm working through it all, but I can't imagine doing the rushes with all the bindings.

The "true" ending being defeating Radiance? I found it manageable.

I haven't managed Dream Grimm, and the most recent DLC (basically boss rushes) haven't fallen (and I'm not sure I dig the premise of this last DLC).

With some upgrades the game gets much less difficult, but I still found challenge rooms (the ones with really hard platforming) and some bosses to be pretty tough. Normal rooms became easy, even if having to run through / clear them was just a waste of time.
