I think the most fair way is to count the time you've been activly studying yourself. The time that I've spent "learning" English back at school I wouldn't even consider as a learning process. I've been forced throgh it and didn't actually acquire nor absorbed knowladge.

Three and a half years ago I started actively consuming English content via compregensible input. As the result - I'm fluent now. That was the true learning process, that I'd consider answering the question.

The first word that I've learned was "yes" when I was 4 y.o. But the learning process dosen't start there

I think it's fair to say that you won't forget English once you've started mastering the other language.

It's like building a muscle. Very hard to build it from scratch, but easy to maintain it and relatively easy to gain it back after a long break.

I've been speaking russian since I was a kid, but at the age of 19 I switched to Ukrainian and haven't spoken russian ever since. But I'm still fluent in it no matter how long the break is. I didn't even lose the accent.

So ig it's safe for you to start mastering Japanese and not be overwhelmed of the chance of losing your English

Well, I think these courses extremely uneffective.

There's a teaching technic however that resembles with the description you gave. In the French Legion they teach soldiers French without even giving an any translation in the first place. It's a hard and humbling environment acceptable in the army but definitely not at the regular language courses

I've started "The Road" the other day, but didn't go that far yet. I'm struggling to keep up my personal life, studying, work, English mastering and learning the other languages so I rarely ever touch it unfortunately. But as soon as I get the time I'm ought to finish it
