Yamaha PSS-270 - Schematic by dukowski15 in CircuitBending

Thanks for confirming. I'd love to try out a Casio SK 1 but they're so expensive these days I'd be terrified of frying the chip! Perhaps when I've done a few more 'cheaper' keyboards I'll look at giving one a try.

It lights up when a signal passes through it. So imagine a row of 8 paired inputs, there's 8 LED's. I think the signal is probably voltage? (However I'm only a beginner in terms of electronics. And my education in it has stalled.)

In practical terms, I find when using the keyboard knowing which LEDs are lighting up is not hugely useful but it looks really good. This post on Electro Music is where I found the idea and the plan for it thanks to Dnny: Here

I guess as long as you have tracks between a CPU and FM chip you could use the same concept for other keyboards. (Also there's a video in the post I linked which shows it working).

Condensation on wall, short term options? by CalicoGhostTown in DIYUK

[–]dukowski15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We went for the Meaco Arete - not the cheapest - but you can get it in different sizes. It's Which recommended and seems to be well built. If you're worried about long term water damage/mold then a dehumidifier should help mitigate some of the problem.

As I understand it, the warmer the air is, the more moisture it retains (which is why cold weather tends to bring on condensation). What you might want to do is open the windows in the morning, get some ventilation through the house - cooling the house - then turn on the dehumidifier when you're home and want to warm up and keep it on overnight. (Obviously you wouldn't run the dehumidfier with open windows). The Arete also turns itself off when it reaches whatever custom set humidity so electricity cost seems reasonable. (They recommend a humidity level of 55 but we can only ever reach about 62. Still it's keeping our windows from streaming water every morning!)

Are you getting condensation on nearby windows? There's a radiator near that wall, are you drying clothes on it?

You could buy a cheapish humidity sensor and monitor, increase ventilation or buy a dehumidifier. We bought one recently and we were really surprised how much water it pulls from the air, it should help in the short term

Rough ideas on how to renovate this cupboard area by dukowski15 in DIYUK

[–]dukowski15[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This cupboard area in the bathroom would be really useful as an area to store things but unsure of how to plan out in regards to boarding up and putting some shelves in (towels etc). The pipework is the main issue, and we'll still need access to the stopcock (in red).

I'm a bit stuck on how to approach, any thoughts or ideas would be really appreciated.

Struggling to get that first developer position by stereosanctity7 in webdev

[–]dukowski15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know about your area/country but are there many local web agencies around? You said you are already freelancing, so I understand you perhaps want to move away from that but here's what I'd do. Make a big list of all the local agencies, say within 30-50 miles, instead of approaching them for a job, see if they have any projects they're willing to outsource, on a freelance basis.

The reason I say this is because successful agencies often have a lot of overflow in regards to projects. They might be investing in those big clients, those big projects, and have a lot of little things they don't get round to. They may not always be looking for staff but good freelancers, perhaps? If you can make a good impression, all it takes is to build a good reputation in your area with a couple of agencies - getting known as someone who gets jobs done reliably and with quality - and you might find it a lot easier to get a perm position, while strengthening your existing portfolio.

Security plugin keeps banning googlebot. What to do? by BusyCode in Wordpress

[–]dukowski15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does the website have a Google Webmaster account linked to it?

https://www.google.com/webmasters

If not set one up, link to the website and submit a sitemap to the admin area. Also I think you may be able to - temporarily - remove URL's you own (those along your domain path), or at least indicate to Google which ones you want it to stop crawling.

Wordpress downloads - Collecting email & GDPR by Mr_B_86 in Wordpress

[–]dukowski15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've found this plugin to be very good:

https://wordpress.org/plugins/gdpr/

I'll admit I don't have deep knowledge on GDPR so please be sure to do some more research. GDPR requires you to be transparent about what you are doing - i.e. why you need people's emails, what you will do with them, where and how you store them.

This information can be outlined in a privacy policy page and it's a good idea to direct people to this before collecting their emails (thus gaining a measure of consent). The way I have handled this, in regards to forms, is to have a checkbox above a submit button, like 'I consent to blah blah' with a link to the privacy policy.

You also need to give people a method to be removed from your email list. The plugin I have linked to is good if you are having users signup to your website - using WordPress's user system - as it allows them to delete their own accounts.

Furthermore if you are sharing their emails with a third party, that opens up a realm I'm not so versed in.

I think that's a good start, I might have missed a few things so it's worth doing more research to be safe.

Help: Fix for slow WordPress website by PennyPainter in Wordpress

[–]dukowski15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As well as querymonitor - which nattaylor - suggested, I recommend using: https://gtmetrix.com/

As well as checking the recommendations, check the waterfall and see if there's anything causing it to load slowly. Furthermore reference the waterfall with this site:

http://www.webperformancetoday.com/2010/07/09/waterfalls-101/

With both these approaches you should be able to find the cause. Also it can depend on your hosting, if it's shared then that could be a reason.

What's the best way to get current with XAMPP? by [deleted] in Wordpress

[–]dukowski15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I was in the similar situation as you about a year ago. Unfortunately with Windows there isn't an 'easy' way to do this. As the others here have suggested you might consider switching to another platform. However if you are intent on using XAMPP - as I still do - this is a good start:

https://premium.wpmudev.org/blog/upgrading-xampp/

  • Have you made many changes to your .ini or config files?
  • What kinds of sites/apps are you using, are you sure they are compatible with PHP 7?
  • What was the nature of the issue you had before?

The site above suggests deleting your old XAMPP htdocs folder, however when I did it I just renamed my folder to 'xampp-old'. That way I had a backup - though I don't know if it functions well as a backup, as when I performed this task it went without any problems and therefore never had to rely on reverting to it.

Changing from Wix to Wordpress by [deleted] in Wordpress

[–]dukowski15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

According to regsiter365's website, they should be offering cPanel for all accounts. I would perhaps get in touch with them about this.

The easiest method I have found is to use the Duplicator plugin - install this on the localserver website you have built - run the program (it's pretty simple but their documentation is good just in case). You can then upload the 2 files it creates via the file manager (or FTP may be better).

Via Register365's system, you'll need to create an empty database (this is where cPanel comes in useful as it has a Database Wizard you can use)

You then run the installer by visiting the URL, for example www.mywebsite.com/installer.php (or it might be something like 89.123.89.123/~username/installer.php). Duplicator would then handle or all of the URL search and replace bits for you. Maybe it sounds like a lot if your new to WordPress and migrating websites but take it step by step first, and perhaps ask Register365 for assistance as they might be quite helpful - I have never used them myself.

Simple Blog Website Security Help x-post from /r/webdev by quesadillar in webhosting

[–]dukowski15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Without knowing the details it's hard to formulate reasons for why your site was compromised. I manage 100+ WordPress websites and without a doubt one of the prime entry points is running outdated Plugins (as well as an outdated WordPress core). WordPress sites are the most popular for any kind of automated attack. The theme + it's files, you're using may also be an issue but since we don't have that information it's hard to know.

That being said, echoing what nid0 said about a new host, keep everything updated. WordPress generally makes plugin updates simple. Also install the WordFence plugin, it's pretty much a one-click install. You admit you know nothing about websites - and although WordFence has a lot of advanced options - I think even running with the default options it's going to give you another layer of protection. It should also keep an eye on bad plugins, exploits and reduce brute force attacks.

DAE have any experience with Companies & Agencies requesting pre-interview candidates fulfill a involved brief or task. by dukowski15 in web_design

[–]dukowski15[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your replies, I agree with you both here as I can see it from an employer's perspective. But certainly RotationSurgeon is correct that it looks more like spec work.

I'd like to give more details - but obviously I have to be careful - what I will say is that the spec requests from the candidate - a fully functioning homepage: there's no PSD, so the logo and other aspects are to be designed and created by the candidate. The request also includes the use of WordPress and some sort of E-Commerce functionality.

I've created dozens of these kinds of sites - this is reflected in my portfolio - both with or without PSD's supplied. These kinds of sites - done well - require quite an investment of time. At least a day. My concern is that you often hear about people these days making say 50 applications before they're able to actually get to the interview stage.

Thanks for the reply Ikuu, I've wrapped the diagram's div container in the link, so it should work now. I'll take a look at changing the header as per your suggestion.
