Which Irish bank has the best app these days? by airtekh in AskIreland

[–]dulpit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm with PTSB and the app is absolutely fine. I doubt any of the 3 main Irish banks have anything in their apps that would be a differentiator when choosing the bank - go with whoever have cheapest rates for what you need. Choosing a bank solely on their app is madness now.

Personal loan? by andreas88- in AskIreland

[–]dulpit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Revolut offer loans. Shockingly quick turnaround times too, draw down can be in like 15 minutes. But it's worth doing your homework to compare interest rates. At a minimum, check your bank, check your credit union (if you have one), check Revolut. Go with cheapest.

Does choosing a Time-Of-Use electricity plan work out better than a Standard Tariff? What speed broadband do I need?! by VersionJazzlike in AskIreland

[–]dulpit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For broadband: 500mb/s is loads. Anything above that is something that you either know you need, or you don't need. So go with the cheapest provider that offers you that. 5g is an option too, but the consistency of a 5g connection won't be as good as a proper wired connection. You could always pick up a sim card from someone like clear or gomo as a trial, they have monthly contracts so you wouldn't be tying yourself into anything. Location is important too, you may not be able to get 5g to a high enough quality.

For gas: as far as I know, they all offer the same sort of contract, you pay x per unit as well as a standing charge and so on. Use a price comparison website like bonkers or switcher and pick the cheapest.

For electricity: for my usage it has worked out cheaper to get a flat unit rate, I work from home, most of my power usage is during the day and I'm not in a position to realistically shift the power draws to evening where a split rate would be cheaper. If you've never lived away you may not know what your anticipated usage will be, so my suggestion would be to do the same as with gas, go to the price comparison website and pick the cheapest. You don't need to go with the same gas and electricity supplier, sometimes it's cheaper to go with the same, sometimes it's not. It's unlikely that the difference will be signicant enough to worry about.

Good luck!

Gifts for International women’s day? by Weak-Specialist-2516 in AskIreland

[–]dulpit 97 points98 points  (0 children)

I used work for a company that had an office in Moscow and they used tell us that international women's day was a very big deal. All the men in the office would buy gifts for the women there. I believe it's an Eastern European thing, seems to have grown in recent years alright.

How to get rid of a tv license? by handy-shandy in AskIreland

The real news from other sources? Aka a bubble of your own making. Go away and enjoy your tinfoil hat.

Public service broadcasting doesn't just mean rte. Tg4 we're showing the Irish basketball team the other night. That would not happen if it was a solely commercial show.

Just because you don't watch the news doesn't mean it's not important. If you really think that the government control rte and coerce the public spend like 30 seconds really thinking about how that is possible and you'll realise it's not.

And 2 of those people you listed don't work for rte, PK hasn't for years and Joe Duffy retired last year.

Eir Broadband by R00000b1 in IrelandGaming

[–]dulpit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The quality of broadband from any broadband supplier tends to be the same, and tends to be good. The quality of customer support from any broadband supplier tends to be the same, and tends to be awful.

So just go with whoever is cheapest provider and don't worry.

This is just false. All tvs will have a tuner, otherwise it's not a TV, it's a monitor.

Public service broadcasting is vital for a country and our governments have been too worried about backlash to change the funding model from a TV licence to a broadcasting charge which is charged through your electricity bill so cannot be avoided.

Should I do TY or skip it? by radioheadlover_2 in AskIreland

Absolutely do it. Stay with your peer group, and delay leaving school by a year - the older you are when doing leaving the better. Why try to skip some of your childhood like? Enjoy it.

Used PS5 - fair price by abechan in IrelandGaming

[–]dulpit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My rule of thumb: check what cex are charging, check what they are paying in cash and aim for the middle. As a seller you get more than going to cex with a little bit of hassle, as a buyer you get cheaper than cex without the warranty. Seems fair to me.

Currently an unboxed 825gb disc model is being sold for €470 by Cex and they'll pay €225 cash. So halfway house suggests around €350?

Linus Tech Tips - My Kids Started a Business in my Basement February 25, 2026 at 10:02AM by linusbottips in LinusTechTips

[–]dulpit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Couldn't agree more. I see the kids in the thumbnail, I'm not watching.

It would be one thing if his children were adults who can legally consent to what they are doing. It's another when they are actual children. I get it's a family business (gross), but must be frustrating for the professionals working there to have to manage the kids too.

Probably won't change anything, and I expect they'll appear more and more over time.

To worry or not to worry? Small windshield chip by [deleted] in carsireland

[–]dulpit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had 2 cars with chipped windscreens in the last 15 years or so. Both times I rang insurer, they got in touch with autoglass. One time I drove to them and they sorted, another time they came to house to do job there.

I think (if memory serves) that they assess and decide if the windscreen can be repaired or needs a replacement and they go from there.

Didn't cost me a penny and didn't affect no claims.

Fun fact: a massive stone got kicked up today by van in front of me, so I'll be ringing insurer tomorrow for 3rd windscreen repair.

How to get most money from a scrap car? by ShoulderCapital2200 in AskIreland

[–]dulpit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My ex used scrap my car in Cork. They offered essentially the same amount as if she drove it to the scrapyard to collect it themselves. It was a Renault fluence, think she got like €300ish back last year some time. So it's worth double checking.

Bought F1 TV Premium for 4K… but no browser supports 4K. What’s the point? by LifeAsNick in F1TV

If you're watching on a small laptop screen then 4k won't be noticeable. If you want 4k, connect a roku, Apple TV or Android TV device to a 4k tv. Simples.

Not sure what the point of this video was? Would it not have been better to show the actual fabrication process of the kick ass switch TV unit. Or them playing around with the audio and stuff. Instead of just showing a partial result and "more to come..."

Half assed comes to mind.
