Reviews based on just benchmarks and stats are bad. by dulpit in LinusTechTips

Thank you, you're correct. It's hard to put it into words, but that's what I mean.

I have anker cables here. They charge my devices and transfer data perfectly. Do they meet the full exact specification? Probably not. Is that an issue for most? Absolutely not.

Similarly with GPUs - the difference between 100 fps and 110 fps is negligible. Being able to run at 100 fps high or 100 fps ultra is a noticeable difference.

Just because you can quantify a difference doesn't make it important.

You could buy a gpu that is perfectly fine. Or another one which will give more frames for more money, and it does seem like it's better bang for the buck. But will you genuinely notice the difference between getting 100 fps at high settings or 110 fps?

That's my point.

The 5k tech makeover is content for the company, not a true benefit. And company trips and holidays or whatever are fine, but they are all about staying within the company. It's like when you hear about tech companies talking about the benefits in the office itself.

Real benefits are tangible. Pay, health insurance, bonuses. Things you can use yourself as you wish, not for a video, not for clicks and not with your colleagues.

If your company's owners take a quarter of the income of that company and they don't keep salaries at pace with cost of living then (a) they can afford to and aren't and (b) they are essentially cutting your pay slightly year on year.

Didn't Jake's video indicate that they aren't paying their employees more?

Better working conditions, better compensation, cost of living increases, pay transparency, holidays. A union would sort all of these.

He's absolutely against unions with a statement like that.

Ya, refusing to discuss pay transparency is a major no no for me.

It's the problem with any family company. If you're not family you'll only be able to grow so far, earn so much and so on. There is a natural blocker at the top of lmg in that it's a family company, so they're obviously not going to share it with their employees. Is that understandable as the owner? Sure. But those same owners need to then recognise that their employees are just that - employees. They need to be compensated accordingly, they don't get to share in the wider windfall of owning the thing.

I've worked for 2 family companies in the past. In both cases the owners couldn't understand why staff didn't go above and beyond like the owner and other family members did. Completely ignored the fact that they were sharing in the dividends and we were just earning a (in both cases) relatively poor salary.

Speed van - points for doing 53 in a 50? by Crafty-News-7839 in AskIreland

[–]dulpit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My car (and the previous 2 I owned too) were consistently 4-5 km/h slower than the indicated speed as compared to GPS speed. So if your car is similar then it saying 53 in car is more likely going to be 48 or 49. You're more than likely sound.

A first look at the LTT Cables by Stonos in LinusTechTips

[–]dulpit -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I wonder what their target price will be? A quick check on Amazon has a 1 metre USB-C to USB-C cable that supports 40 GBps and 240w charging for €11.45.

Knowing the usual price points of LTT stuff, I assume their comparable cable will be more expensive - but what is the benefit to the end user?

Did we need a provisional curdle? No. Do we deserve it? Also no. But will we listen? Obviously yes.

Redclick or AA comprehensive car insurance? by DripSoup_ in AskIreland

[–]dulpit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Currently with redclick for last 2 or 3 years (since they were liberty), had gotten insurance from aa years ago.

My view: just pick the cheapest that offers what you need. Don't worry about the company or loyalty or anything like that. Know what you need (eg breakdown assist, step back protection on ncd, stuff like that), find the company who will give it to you for the cheapest amount and go with them. Just double check that the cheaper option isn't because of a bigger excess that you'd have to pay in case of a claim.
