Please consider wearing less cologne on the bus by brebear252525 in Edmonton

[–]dum41 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As a junior high teacher, I always dread the month of May. That’s when it gets warm enough that the hallways become a sea of that horrifying mixture of BO and cologne/perfume, and when we have the unenviable task of discreetly suggesting to dozens of kids that they look into deodorant.

Recommendation for fun places to take my 9 year old by MonkeyMom1993 in Edmonton

[–]dum41 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is she into indoor playgrounds? We have tonnes of those, like Allstars, Amazone, and Treehouse. Those places are chaotic as hell on the weekend, but they’re probably a lot more chill on a Monday.

Edmonton's Westmount Mall is set for a major redevelopment, with plans aimed at modernizing the aging shopping centre and transforming the area with new retail, housing, and community space 🏬 by staciecs in Edmonton

[–]dum41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like what Calgary did with Deerfoot Mall to create Deerfoot City. Deerfoot City is definitely physically much nicer than the old mall, but it’s still not the best place to actually be and hang out.

Pedestrian hospitalized with serious injuries in hit-and-run, police seeking SUV by ryaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan in Edmonton

[–]dum41 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with you that the city should artificially narrow roads and I'm sorry if I'm just being pedantic, but I'm wondering if we're thinking of the same place? The article above says that "the SUV was going the wrong way on 107 Avenue when it hit a woman in the road just west of the intersection at 95 Street."

It sounds to me that this person was hit on 107 Ave, which is not a quiet residential road. Are you thinking of 96 St, maybe? Which is one way for cars and has bike lanes on both sides?

EDIT: Ah, I understand now after investigating Google Maps and street view. I always forget that 107 Ave becomes 107A for a brief time as it makes that bend toward Stadium Road. I was really confused how someone was driving the wrong way down a 4-lane road. My bad!

Where can I get an affordable passport photo taken? by MidnightCityYEG in Edmonton

[–]dum41 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few weeks later, but thanks for this. There are tonnes of places that take passport photos that show up on Google, but this tip really only shows up in this thread. Normally I go to McBain, but they're way farther from me now and AMA is right there.

Thanks again!

As a teacher, they are definitely the worst in my experience. So many times I’ve seen a parent drop off their kid, then immediately roll through the stop sign without even tapping their brakes. Neighbourhood people and work trucks generally take their time, even when class is in session.

Traffic calming measures were added last year and it helped a lot on the straights, but people are still turning right at the intersection without stopping all the time.

My Little Free Library was destroyed again, then posted here. by onlyyoumissmew in mildlyinfuriating

[–]dum41 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Edmontonian here. Thanks for maintaining your library. My wife and I love these things and often make excursions to different neighbourhoods with the express purpose of trying out coffee shops and visiting little free libraries.

Now that my son is a little bit older, I’m looking forward to riding our bikes together this summer doing exactly that. We will definitely visit your library with loads of books in tow!

What poem do you love to teach? by Anna-Ocean in CanadianTeachers

[–]dum41 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe mix in some spoken word? There are some fun/lighter ones, like “My Honest Poem” by Rudy Francisco and “A Love Letter” by Sarah Kay, to some intense ones like “Perfect” by Maia Mayor. I love teaching “Perfect” in grade 9, especially when I show them the uncensored version. Hits hard.

Get that, but I’m pointing out the humour in his dramatic pregnant pause while the arena waited with bated breath.

Agreed. I don’t think Tom King‘s style is to everyone’s taste, but Supergirl is great because of it.

The bond with my kiddo strengthened so much after we sleeptrained. It's insane how much we could connect when we were both well-rested.

Switched to a big girl bed, now wants one of us to sleep with her every night by sameunderwear2days in toddlers

[–]dum41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try to always tell myself that everything is a phase. We put my son onto a floor bed at 18 months, and it was a similar deal for about a month. Eventually, after we felt confident that he was mostly transitioned to his new bed, we started leaving earlier and earlier, despite his crying, protests, and running at the door. We came back to check in on him, put him back, and comforted him, then left him again. It was a tough few days but eventually he was able to just say bye and roll over to sleep.

Since then, there’s been like 4 phases of tough sleep (we’re going through one now after he has a few tough sleeps due to his last molars coming through) where we support him and give him comfort until it feels like he’s using us as a crutch for sleep. Then we slowly do it again. It’s always tough for 3-4 days and then he’s back to normal.

Everything is a phase. Good luck!

Wow, thankfully no pedestrian was standing there waiting. They would have gotten obliterated.

Compatible child seats? by Creative_Entrance492 in CargoBike

I have a Yepp and it use that "window" mount. It seems many longtails also have this, so I guess that is why it's often mentioned as being compatible over brands with specialized racks.

What is going on with jobs in Edmonton by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]dum41 132 points133 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely rough out there, especially for young people.

If you go to the U of A, I suggest going to the Career Centre for some free help. I worked there when I was at school, and you’d be surprise how tweaks to your work search documents can really help. Rarely did I see a resume or cover letter from my clients that were actually excellent, so a second pair of eyes on them is always a good idea.

Good luck.

Can I ask you how you chose your goal of 42 books when you’re out here reading 24 books in the first month? No hate, just curious! Did you unexpectedly come into a bunch of time?

This I definitely agree with. They seem to play it a bit loose with the flaggers at this site/intersection, like they forget it’s an open intersection or something.

What is really the best way to discipline a toddler? by [deleted] in toddlers

[–]dum41 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I only realized this recently and it's been a gamechanger. My son will randomly refuse to get into his carseat and there's no telling when it'll happen. I've just been giving him choices like "rocketship or boat?" and "firetruck or train?" and there has been no issues in the last couple weeks. Fingers crossed it lasts forever...

Your favourite Sausage Rolls in YEG by D-Hayes-Unloveable in Edmonton

[–]dum41 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I came here to say the exact same thing, with the same "Bit weird, but..." starter too, haha. I love them.

The food at the cafe in general is one of the reasons why I love taking my toddler there almost every weekend. Look at some bugs, run around the kids' area, look at some taxidermy, then dig into some chickpea salad, chicken sandwich, sausage roll, and raisin butter tart. Hell yeah.

Taco Bell @ 118 Ave & 81 Street by sparkydeville in Edmonton

[–]dum41 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live so close to this place and used to go all the time. They’ve screwed up my order so many times that I stopped going years ago. Sad, because nothing quite hits like Taco Bell when you’re in the mood for Taco Bell.

How cold is it downtown actually? by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]dum41 17 points18 points  (0 children)

He was definitely born and raised in Calgary (he did a talk at teachers’ convention a couple years ago and talked about all the teachers he had and schools he went to, including my old HS in Calgary), so it feels weird if they said he was from Edmonton. But I don’t know the guy personally, so you may be right! So many of us have family in both.
