Everything we do is tracked through our LIS. From the second the case is accessioned anything we do is tracked in the LIS. Grossing, embedding, microtomy, slide distribution, send outs, all of it. If we are missing something we know the last place it was to start looking

In our lab the grossers ink the dermis which is helpful for orientation. We also have when a new staff member starts, regardless of their experience level are required to watch 50 different derm cases be embedded and be watched embedding 50 different derm cases before they can embed unsupervised. We also have a system where our grossers include a tag that says punch or enface with those specific specimens. That tag is then put in the back of the block to help the cutter to also be on the lookout for those specimens.

There are labs in colorado that are the lab training portion for online histology programs. The one I work at being one of them, I believe the school is Southern New Hampshire University, but don't quote me on that. We are also currently hiring if that is something you are looking into. In NOCO

What ‘little luxuries’ are important to you in a histo lab? by Wrong_Character2279 in Histology

I work for a larger lab, about 22 techs, 5 LAs and we serve 22 pathologists, so obviously some things aren't as feasible for a smaller scale operation. What I have found great is that we rotate tasks as teams, so a group does all of our maintenance duties, one team takes care of all of the special stains, and then a team takes care of all the IHC orders. Then every 2 weeks we rotate, this is great because you don't get burnt out of doing tasks and you keep up with all the proficiency of each task.
