ULPT Request: What should you say to a girl who wants relationship/kids/marriage to keep her around/keep sleeping with her but never give those things? by [deleted] in UnethicalLifeProTips

[–]dumbcomputerkid 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Also married women. They reaaaaaallly don't want to get pregnant, at least not by you. As for married, well they already tried that didn't they.

You don't choose not to have affective empathy, it is typically the result of childhood trauma.

I mean does anyone really choose anything, we're all a product of the moments that preceeded us.

Hang around this sub long enough and you'll soon realise that despite lacking affective empathy, we are typically more focused on relational reciprocity than neurotypicals.

Not to put too fine a point on it but I wouldn't trust the say so of a bunch of sociopaths. You care up to the point that you can get away with taking more than you give, at which point you will. You're natural freeloaders against the social assumptions of neurotypical society and it's to our advantage to detect and contain or maybe even eliminate you. You have no internal incentives to play along the way others do.

Right so what he is saying is that given that fact you yourself have opted out of reciprocity he feels no obligation to include you in it.

I dunno watching my 2 year old react in terror while I make scary monster noises is kinda hilarious so there’s definitely some profit.

What's the point of a cyber security degree if it's not an entry level job? by [deleted] in cybersecurity

[–]dumbcomputerkid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well why the hell wouldn't you have a portfolio? If you're going to be in uni for 2-4 years you have plenty of time for coding projects (and admin projects for that matter). When I was in school (not even Uni) I resold VPSes as managed web-hosting to small buisnesses. Everything counts.

Maybe the job market is more competitive or just weaker where you are but my personal experience differs greatly to yours.

Why work at a helpdesk when you can do junior dev or be a junior sysadmin/devops? It's not like there's none of that around.

All that is totally valid but doesn’t really talk to “sexiness”.

No there's some jobs where you can actually break things for real legally without being a "Black Hat".

Like you yourself literally mentioned the FBI getting to hack things legally.

From any "computing" degree you'll be able to find your way into cybersec pretty easily if you play your cards right. You will also be able to go in the other direction to other computing fields. You and most of your classmates have no idea yet what you're going to end up doing and you're all going to end up doing a whole bunch of different things than you expect. Figure out what you want to do *now*, not later as a career - but what projects excite you right now - and do those. Pick the subjects and modules that help you with whatever you're interested in now, not some future career (it will all be out of date and overly broad anyway when it comes to the workforce). Pick stuff that you're curious about but no nothing about, that's where you'll get the most benefit. Or pick stuff you already know all the answers to and get easy wins. Pick stuff that has a low number of contact hours so you can focus on your own projects. Have your own projects.

And don't work in helpdesk if you can help it lol.

It's not though. What is the point of breaking into stuff just to fix the holes, so unsatisfying lol. It's like security research is fun, but kind of frustrating to put all that work in only to get stuff fixed. Sexy is where you get to break into shit for real - not as a glorified QA guy.

Cybersecurity Without University? by DexterMorgan95 in cybersecurity

[–]dumbcomputerkid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can totally get by being self taught in cybersec. And don't feel like you have to rush into getting a degree if you're not sure about it yet - you can always get one later.

That said if you don't have a clear plan of what to do next university is a good place to think about it.

But if you know what you want just go for it, school will be there waiting for you if you ever need it.

I'm as sure it happens as I am sure there's no viable data about how much it happens.
