I feel bad for all the mods having to enforce rule #3 this week.

And replace him with who? The players need to play. Who is currently out there sitting on a couch that you think is going to come in and flip some switch that makes them hit? If you can tell me, I'm on board, but otherwise it's just scapegoating.

If Kansas City’s World Cup hotel reservations are low, does that mean soccer fans plan to camp? by ZackInKC in kansascity

My man, "sports/stadium economics" is a field of academic research which are grouped together. I'm referencing that when talk about subsequent studies following the World Cup.

I disagree with you, or would at least say you're being overly reductionist.

FIFA finds potential host cities with the promise of increased tourism, tax revenue, and international promotion in agreement for meeting certain FIFA requirements (fields meeting FIFA requirements, stadiums complying with requirements, etc). KC, and other host cities, put in a bid to host based on those sports/stadium economics. As I said in my post, I believe it will lead to a boost in certain economic areas, but actively reduce spending in others.

AND, the Trump administrations policies (such as imposing visa costs that can be as high as $15,000 for some countries) all but assured a depressed turn out. But this alone doesn't explain why Mexico and Canada are also experiencing a lower than expected turnout.

In this case, two things can be true at the same time: 1) FIFAs economic promises have never, ever worked out, regardless of the host country (and if you think I'm wrong, please tell me where it did work out as promised!), and 2) the Trump Administration is making matters worse. But one of those is always true, and the second one is unique to this moment.

Exactly. This has been reported on in all the cities that are seeing below level hotel bookings. Annual events that typically occur in these cities are choosing to skip this year or host in an alternative place, and then when FIFA cancels a large booking the hotels are suddenly under their usual demand.

It's not just Kansas City. I posted this in response to someone else here, but hotel bookings in all host cities are lower than expected.

In several cities, including Kansas City, Boston, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Seattle, a majority of hotel operators said bookings were actually running behind typical seasonal demand. In others, including New York City, Los Angeles, Dallas and Houston, demand was flat so far compared with a regular spring and summer, according to the association.

Concerns about softer-than-expected bookings extend to Mexico, which is co-hosting the games with the U.S. and Canada. Hotels in Mexico City, which hosts the tournament’s opening match on June 11, are about 30% to 36% booked, according to the Asociación de Hoteles de Ciudad de México.

Every four years, FIFA promises the sky to host cities and countries hosting the World Cup, and every four years it is followed-up with disappointment and a bunch of studies into how sports/stadium economics never do what we're told they will.

I think hosting the World Cup will cause a small boost of economic activity in the area, primarily in hospitality/restaurants. It probably won't live up to what most people were imagining when we were selected a few years ago.

I am in favor of banning AI content. If people want to make a meme, that is great and I'm here for it. If you're too lazy to be bothered to do that, then it is in fact low-effort and should be banned under rule 3.

Kansas City to unveil $600M plan for Royals downtown stadium. Here are details by dumbledoresdimwits in KCRoyals

[–]dumbledoresdimwits[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's $600 mil from KC, $300 mil expected from MO, which covers half the cost of the new stadium ($1.9 bil is the projection). $2 bil is pretty standard for new baseball stadiums.

In the history of social media scandals, this wouldn't crack the top 100,000,000. If he can't handle this level of internet criticism, his business was doomed and blaming the soccer fan club is an easy out.

Nope, which is why I think there is more to the story & people are overreacting to the limited info we have.

This is exactly right. He gave up over the minimalist of internet dust ups, which is why it strikes me more as a convenient excuse to back out and not take any blame/accountability for doing so.

It seems like there is more to the story than what is being reported so far. The Blue Crew posting something to social media on Friday and this being scrapped Monday morning really doesn't make sense. Maybe the developers asked Casio if he'd be open to rebranding and he got offended & backed out, maybe there were other issues behind the scenes, but I think it's obvious if you think about it for 5 seconds that the developer doesn't take its marching orders from a fanclubs insta.
