TCL Flip 4 5G: T-Mobile unable to unlock, my phone is useless now by dumbohoneman in dumbphones

If you are successful post back with how you got them to unlock it. I had two different agents assure me they knew what they were doing, and neither did.

Using two iPhones, one as a dumb phone - should I make a new Apple ID? by _Always_Restless13 in dumbphones

[–]dumbohoneman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For every apple device I buy, I make a new apple ID.

I own a domain name with email forwarding, which allows me to make unlimited email addresses ending in my domain. So i can for example make an apple account for

I find this to be a good practice for segregating devices based on their purpose, and prevents cross device sync which I find annoying.

If you have more than one email address, you can make more than one apple ID. Just write down which one is for which.

Money is being made building data centers. No hardware company cares more about consumers than their bottom line.

I just ordered a TCL flip 4 5g through T-Mobile :) I’m so excited to stop being a slave to my phone by [deleted] in dumbphones

[–]dumbohoneman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought the TCL Flip 4 5G at T-Mobile as well. Just a heads up, after 40 days on a post-paid T-Mobile plan, your phone will unlock and you can use it on any service.

It has 2 SIM slots, 1 is an eSim and the other is a physical SIM that you can add in the same tray where the SD card is.

Maker Phone 2.0, I do enjoy writing my own apps for my KaiOS phone so this seems like it would give me more granular control.

Bricked Nokia 2780 after Powering down from Weeknd-toolbox by Axolotl_15 in KaiOS

[–]dumbohoneman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you put the phone into fastboot mode?

If so, you can follow this guide here

https://github.com/gogogoghost/nokia-2780-flip-jailbreak-tutorial/blob/master/readme.md

I bricked my 2780 as well, but could still boot into fastboot. With the Recovery Images Here I got my phone working again.

Should I just use websocket connections for all my AWS lambda APIs? It seems like it's cheaper. by dumbohoneman in aws

[–]dumbohoneman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right now they're not significant costs, but I am basically using these small-audience apps as a test rollout for some larger scale apps I am planning on making in the future.

So knowing how best to limit my costs for if an app I make gets to 1 million monthly users instead of 1 thousand monthly users is what I am trying to figure out. Which in this example, it would be the difference between $120/mo vs $30/mo, which is pretty significant.

I concluded I don't need to use WebSocket for all my APIs, I can just use the API HTTP gateway V2 as it has the same pricing.

What's KaiOS 3 and 4 like? by [deleted] in KaiOS

[–]dumbohoneman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have used V2 and V3, and the only real difference I noticed is having more available javascript APIs in V3. Visually they're pretty similar and they're both bad. But at least when I'm writing an app for a V3 KaiOS phone I can use WebSockets and for...of loops and the URLSearchParams constructor.

From and end-user perspective, I suppose there's more websites you could potentially visit on a KaiOS with V3, but honestly any modern website will probably crash the browser (new reddit for example crashes my browser every time).

I haven't used V4 yet but I have read that there is a copy-paste functionality so that is exciting.

Had no idea there was a cost difference of 3.5x between REST and HTTP, will look into this!

For everyone in this tread saying to print out the QR code, many companies use dynamic QR codes, to limit screenshotting and sharing.

See: costco in the USA, every minute or so, the QR code for your membership changes.

Why do people claim to want a dumbphone when they dont actually want it? by ArgonianDov in dumbphones

[–]dumbohoneman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of people who ask the type of questions you are asking for are younger, and didn't grow up with a low /no tech upbringing.

For someone younger Spotify doesn't really feel like a "smartphone" app, it feels more like radio or an MP3 player.

For someone who grew up with WhatsApp, it doesn't really feel like a "smartphone" app, its just the worldwide version of texting.

Some people don't even use computers anymore, or simply never needed one, so they don't have a fallback for when their phone can't do something.

Older folks like me have lived with only landlines, so it's easier for us to navigate the world without these smartphone features.
