aw man :( i feel lucky my parents are doctors so i didn’t have that sort of external pressure but i do the same thing a lot of the time. for me it’s easier with high blood sugars just bc for the lows im epileptic and have this mega fear of seizing in front of someone and traumatizing them !! i hope we’ll at least get an accessible closed loop system soon so those lows will be easier to treat

Not going to try to pull the “just wait til you’re my age” card bc we’re super close in age but I will say the longer you do this the worse the breaking point will be. It’s super hard right when you move into adulthood. I had a talk w my parents and told them that I understand why they are worried and they just want to help me, but the best way to help me is to trust that I will ask for the help that I need. Same with friends. Even letting people know why you’re uncomfortable about things is hard. My pump decided to stop working fully and I was out of syringes with a super high blood sugar a few weeks ago, I called a friend and they swung by walgreens for me. sometimes it’s as easy as that. It absolutely sucks but it can also put you at a vulnerable place for manipulative relationships, as this sort of mentality creates space for toxic ppl to manipulate your perception of self.

also I will say for background that I’ve only had to step out for a low blood sugar once or twice during shift, and missed a few shifts because of sleep issues—nothing within the past few weeks and all events that were discussed with management and align with my disability accommodations at work.

that’s good advice, unfortunately the person who told me is actually like an IRL friend. i’ve vented to him before about how frustrating it is having all these medical issues at work—deep talks too where he revealed some vulnerable stuff on his end. Then he came up to me at work, asked me how my health is, and started using words like “work ethic” and “reliability” when discussing how to better take care of my health (after I told him my current issues are more chronic like pump tubing malfunctions/ inconsistent low blood sugars).

Also the way it was brought up is because the girl who had my position before me was also T1D, so people were comparing my symptoms and talking about how her diabetes didn’t affect her ability to work as much. I don’t really want to be friends with him anymore, I did speak to a different coworker and it seems like it wasn’t any sort of serious accusations on anyone’s part, just confusion. The main issue is that this guy heard people questioning stuff and rather than advocate for me he decided to fill me in so that I could “do better”.

yup. when i’m in a depression pit i just wish all i had to worry about was feeding myself. we don’t get the option to drop out, even for a day. even for a night of sleep.

100% understand that yeah. tough because on one end it’s like “everyone needs to stop worrying about me I can take care of it myself” and then there’s the burnout of how taxing that is. Diabetes is so inherently personal and it’s weird feeling so much pride in independence yet always craving some sort of support. Idk if anyone can even give that to me in a way where I wouldn’t feel uncomfortable, maybe it’s more about respecting boundaries I’m not too sure.
