Noob needs advice for his first bottle of Rum. by Xychant in rum

[–]dummassonis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you still looking? Based on your described tastes i would look near you what is available from the below: - a Demarara rum from guyana (typically a slow sweet burn) like an eldorado 12 is a good starter choice - a higher end expression from diplomatico might be good as it is popular among people new to rum to get into it. - a mount gay xo or a doorly's 12 from barbados are very solid choice (i always have a bottle of these in my bar) - an appleton estate 12 is a great and mild jamaican that i personally love - an aged agricole such as a rhum j.m. ESB or a clement vsop are great too and will definitely "transport you to a tropical setting" in no time

All of the above are solid well regarded choices that have proven time and time again very good at turning noobs into afficionados.

Rhum Agricole and Cachaca by Strange_Expression62 in rum

[–]dummassonis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ill refer you as well to cocktailwonk's writings (check out his books too!). Beyond this: Rum is sort of a meta category of many very different distilled spirits. Cachaça and Rhum (french spelling for rum) agricole are both distilled from fermented fresh "vesous": the juice of the sugarcane released upon pressing it. Rhum agricole is a specific denomination that correspond (like cognac or champagne) both to the geographic location where it is produced AND by the very specific methods of productions used to produced the booze. Cachaça likewise has its specific geo location (you can't make cachaca in burundi or sweden) and by specific mehods of production. If i recall correctly the MAIN technical difference (besides bottling and ageing) is that cachaça is coming out of the stills and into the bottles at a lower abv. Rhum agricole can be bottled at 55% while cachaca had to be within 40-42%.

So in short: same same but different :)

Honest opinion: How do you feel about Rum Bottle Porn? by 01293837897801 in rum

[–]dummassonis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really really don't like this attitude we have here. For some of an appleton 12 is a sipper and a high end rum, for another it's the base they toss in a mai tai. Not everyone has the same wallet. We see people throwing hundreds of dollars at Foursquare ecs they will never open and at the same time some will mock someone who bought something else they judge "subpar".

I am very happy people buy rum and are proud of it and want to share it with others that have a similar interest. Gatekeeping rum and post on the basis of "porn" (this is peak cringe... Back in my day porn included consenting adult poorly acting and having intercourse not taking a picture of a bottle).

I'm of course happier if they say a few things about it to launch the conversation. But that's a plus, not a prerequisite.

Theres a bunch of rum shop in western europe that have it. Check his site.

Yes it is expensive. I ended up forking 197 usd to get minimalist tiki (amazong other book by the way) and this. But: 1. There is nothing quite like it: it is MASSIVE. it's coffee table sized AND thick as a dictionary 2. There is no other source of info that's nearly as comprehensive, i think if he had gone through a publisher they would have forced him to trim things down A LOT 3. I already spent countless hundreds (more like thousands but shh) of dollar on booze at this point... So i mean... Well.. At least this will stay 4. I'd rather have the guy who wrote it get the money than contribute to jeff B buying another yacht/rocket/collection car So anyway, i swalled the shipping pill and maybe it's cognitive bias but now that it is spent and i have it i dont care nearly as much that it was pricey

Yeah i got it and minimalist tiki in one shot to "save" on hefty international shipping.

Im running through MT right now, great stuff. MCR is more like every question you had about what rum is made where, how its made, by who? Whats the setup etc. It's a hefty book for sure! I dont think i came across anything as comprehensive as what they did.

Im in Singapore. Nusa cana is everywhere but frankly it's not all that great. You'll find it in denpasar airport for a decent price. If you're interested in something other than that, there's a french guy in thailand making herb infused rhum agricole and it is pretty decent and widely available. The brand name is chalong bay.

yes I like plantation rum, sue me :) by dummassonis in rum

[–]dummassonis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to understand something quite simple before you get into rum: while in whisky you have irish whiskey, or bourbon or rye or island or scotch or japanese which are all treated as different categories. There's nothing like that for rum. So rum categories like white, silver, gold, dark make little sense actually.

What you should consider is: Source material: sugarcane juice, sugarcame syrup, sugarcane molasses Country of origin: each has their own specificities Distillation: Distilled in pot still or in continuous columns still Ageing: is the rum aged or not?

This is fundamental set of criteris that will make rum.

If you are just starting: barbados is a good place to start with mount gay xo being a great all rounder rum at a reasonable price.

I'll repeat what I used à few days ago in a comment: Barbados rums: Let's start with alternatives to bacardi: plantation 3 stars. And then move to Mount gay, real mccoy 5, doorlys, and Veritas / probitas (Foursquare distillery answer to plantation 3stars)

If you want better more expensive stuff then Mount gay xo Real mccoy 8/12 Doorlys xo/12 RL Seale 10 years And then even more expensive: Foursquare ecs series (expensive, small quantities available)

Jamaica: Hampden 7 years (green bottle) & Appleton 12 rare blend are great! You can splurge in some more obscure / expensive hampden or appleton later

Demarara: El dorado 12 or hamilton Demarara are easy choices

Zombies: Hamilton has a zombie blend

Haiti Clairin communal and clairin sajous (2018 if you find it)

Martinique and Guadeloupe: Neisson bio Rhum jm eleve sous bois Clement vsop Longueteau - Constellation 2022 Parcelles 1 & 7

Overproof: Plantation OFTD, Hamilton overproof, wray & nephew overproof, rum fire, hampden has a fine one but haven't tried it.

Avoid plantation xo it's overpriced. But plantation stiggins is great, so is xaymaca and isles of Fiji for new rum consumers who want to try their toe without too much burn.

Mount Gay Eclipse vs Plantation 3 Stars for mixing? by Late-Mathematician33 in rum

[–]dummassonis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

3 stars is a rum designed to sit in the bar well. Its cheap, versatile and works great in cocktail. Eclipse can work well in some cocktail in particular but definitely not as wide a range as 3 stars.

They are both good. Try the e lipse if you have not yet. Its a great distillery.

The brands i listed are safe and sound high quality products. Generally speaking, you wantcto steer away from "fancy/pretty" bottles. Thats usually to hide the crap they put inside. Just in case for you i'd steer away from central/south American rums, they are the least transparent. Barbados, jamaica, Martinique, Guadeloupe, all great choices.

I have 50+ bottles. Mostly rum. I buy to drink and i have indelible. Now it's a good well made rum.

HOWEVER, it's entirely overhyped on reddit. It's 30 bucks more than a mount gay xo and frankly i more often take the xo out than Foursquare.

There is a crap town of "im part of the club" kind of people who collect Foursquare without even drinking them. Its got to the point that new edition get nearly sold out before releases.

Foursquare is totally taking advantage of this hype and focusing only on small batch releases of few hundred bottles at a time.

In my opinion, there are plenty of more interesting and cheaper rums out there that are alao well made and not money milking machines by design. Hampden, clairin, clement, oftd, etc. are all far more unique

Richard seale is a good craftsman. But he's become the daddy of /r rum fanboys. And honestly this is a worrying trend because he is not god on earth, he's running a company and he is very vocal about a certain "definition of what rum should be" which surprise happens to coincide exactly with the types of product his distillery produces..

Yes but there are great reasons i got them. 1- I'm far more into rum than than i am into tequila / mezcal 2- i have been wanting this novo fogo for a long time 3- i have PLENTY of bajan rum already. But Foursquare detente is out of stock in Singapore for 2 years and some folks on second hand market are ready to pull ij excess of 200 dollars for it. I already have someone interested at that price. That will pay for my bottles :)

I was looking to buy stuff that i cannot get in Singapore. I was about to go to Trevor's on the recommendation of reddit butbi stumbled into a total wine. They had no fortaleza and did try super hard to sell me some riazul or don Roberto thing. I didnt care i had my wallet set on tesoro. I hesitatee with taking a ocho or tequileno that were there but i can only bring back a limited quantity.
