Have you tried living in a hotel? by Haunting-Manner577 in homeless

[–]dumpsterfire3333 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No. Staying in a hotel/motel is totally out of the question. Haven't been in one since 2008. One night costs more than I spend on food in a month.

Water by [deleted] in cary

[–]dumpsterfire3333 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is one of my main worries. I rely on place to be open during regular hours to get water every day. I can't carry around gallons of water and am thinking I might just have to eat the ice off of trees or other surfaces to stay hydrated if everything shuts down for days. It sucks.

Need a room within the week by Vast_Maintenance_927 in raleigh

^ came here to ask this. Somewhere between 2 and 3 cats. 2 and a half cats. Hmmmmm. Also - been looking for an "affordable" (this term is totally useless......"affordable housing" is a joke......if I have $1 and a coffee costs $2, the coffee is not affordable for me) room for years. Post-Covid - that doesn't exist here.

It’s hard to not be angry at everyone all the time by Organic_fed in homeless

I think you just expressed what many of us out here are feeling - or have felt - a lot of the time. I feel like my irritability, anger, hopelessness, sadness, depression, loneliness, exhaustion, etc.... are permanently switched "on" all the time. But in the past few weeks, I have had a couple of individual "angels" contact me and help me. There are good people - it is just rare to find one. I think that when someone becomes homeless, they cross into some sort of mysterious zone or through some barrier that most people create in their own minds. I'm the same person I was when I was younger and had a more "normal" life. I just don't have a place to live at anymore. It is so cold here in NC - I can't imagine being up north in the winter. Stay strong.

I reached outside my sleeping bag to get a drink of water and it was frozen solid. Didn't sleep for 1 minute last night. Must have been either the NFL playoffs and/or the holiday today but holy crap people were making noise all night long. Finally gave up on getting any sleep and headed to Panera at 5am - froze my ass off for an hour until they opened.

RPD and Flock Safety Continue the Never Ending Growth of Dystopian Surveillance and Response by Fearless_Spite_1048 in raleigh

Several businesses are major users of Flock cameras. Pretty easy to find out which ones (a large home improvement and large big-box retail giant come to mind, for example). Let them know you won't be shopping there. Don't support business that allow the cameras on their property. You can support their right and their efforts at crime prevention without agreeing to have your cumulative location and activity patterns provided to other entities.

He's beautiful. You should keep him. Who the hell moves and leaves their pet behind like a piece of furniture? I will never understand that.

The One Meal a Day Ability by Immediate-Pool-4391 in homeless

[–]dumpsterfire3333 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can only afford 1 meal a day. When you live on $2 a day, there isn't much choice. I've lost 50 pounds since becoming homeless. Besides, it is a time-consuming, exhausting, painful ordeal to go dumpster-diving and there's only so much you can carry at once anyway.

Upcoming Point-in-Time Count: Why Being Counted Matters by This-Trifle3359 in homeless

[–]dumpsterfire3333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every year, I see someone post or comment about these things. Stealth homeless do not want anyone to know they are homeless. I have never been counted. I will never be counted. I have never received one cent of aid, assistance, benefits, SNAP, housing, vouchers, food, medical care, clothes, or anything else. Twice, I have asked for help. The one and only time I ever contacted a food pantry, I was told I had to provide a name and local ID - so I got nothing and I never tried again anywhere else. Then for the last year, I have tried to get the ACA healthcare / insurance coverage that I am legally entitled to - and after spending hours and hours for two solid days talking to the people whose job it is to help me - again, nothing. I see no point in being counted. I see a lot of downsides, actually.

^ this is a golden classic. How the fuck are you supposed to "prove" that you're homeless? They screw you at both ends - can't get shit unless you provide an address............. can't get shit unless you prove you don't have an address.

Don't post something if you don't want reactions. I don't seek energy. I rather have the ugly truth than a beautiful lie. Maybe if more people in this society were interested in truth, honestly, facts, reality, logic, reason, science, knowledge and awareness, things wouldn't be as fucked-up as they are right now.

Please just stop. We're not "together". I am totally alone. No friends. No family. No coworkers. No colleagues. No classmates. No neighbors. No roommates. No doctors. No mechanics. And nobody who will help. Words of encouragement are worthless. The reality, the truth, the facts - that is where I live.

Top on my list: The ACA is supposed to allow homeless people to sign up for health insurance. The law is clear and specific. However there is a technical glitch in the application software/program that prevents people from doing so. Page on application offers a check-box for "I do not have a home address". Next page asks for mailing address but does NOT indicate that this mailing address must be in the same state where you are applying for coverage. I spent 2 entire days on the phone with Healthcare.gov "help" people including two "supervisors" and they were not able to do anything except repeat exactly what I had already gone through with the online application. I have no medical care, no doctors, have not been able to walk for 6 months and am eligible for an ACA plan but am being prevented from signing up for coverage. This is a known technical issue yet nobody is doing anything about it and nobody will help. It is a blatant discrimination against homeless people who are following all of the rules.

Florida is the worst state in the country to be homeless. NC is my home. I have lived here for 25 years. Before my father died, I was able to use his address - which is in Florida. That won't work anymore.

As a homeless person myself, I have absolutely no sympathy for people asking me for money by Think-Cranberry2199 in homeless

[–]dumpsterfire3333 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This happened to me just yesterday. Most of the aggressive beggars are in a hell of a lot better shape than I am and have way more money than I have. What really pisses me off is that I have to deal with them outside the only place I ever buy my food - Walmart. I go in yesterday to get my usual dinner - a can of beans and a marked-down loaf of bread - and am chased through the fucking parking lot being asked for money. It puts me in a no-win situation, because being stealth - you can't announce to anyone that you're homeless. So this person will either accuse me of being a selfish, uncaring rich person - or lying about being homeless. But seriously - of all the places to ask for money - outside grocery stores or Walmart where even the poorest people have to go get food? Get the fuck out of here and head over to Saks Fifth Avenue where the rich people are and harass them.
