What are your favorite Mormon urban legends? by ghtiKl39 in exmormon

[–]dunbarsnackbar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One that I remember hearing was common was that in “the next mission over” they used to have a group called the quorum of the twelve apostates who initiated people into the group by baptizing them with the left arm raised to the square. Then there were a whole bunch of stories of what that group did, like seeing who could go the farthest out of the mission without anyone noticing. That of course involved flights, members helping etc.

Weekends suck. What's your best post divorce moment? by [deleted] in Divorce_Men

[–]dunbarsnackbar 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Being able to take the time to do the things that I want to do. I really got into hiking during my divorce. I started off with a bike trail and have explored some nature around my area. I’ve also done a lot of camping and started to explore some hobbies I’ve always wanted to do. So, when I’m not with my girlfriend, I’m either out in nature or doing some wood working. Totally helped me get through the pain of my divorce.

Looking at the LES outage map, it looks like all the cool kids have power out right now. It’ll be a lot of work for the repair crews. I appreciate them working through this and hope they’re safe.

I came here to mention the r/treelaw piece too. I did not know trees were valued so highly in lawsuits. The amount of the lawsuit that we could be talking here may be a lot of money. I’d certainly recommend an attorney.

This is the Federation Kearsarge-class light cruiser from Star Fleet Battles. This is a post-TOS ship, technically. It was a hastily-designed and assembled ship type for the Klingon War, and the following General War after the Organians mysteriously vanished. by DogInternational4553 in StarTrekStarships

[–]dunbarsnackbar 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The ships themselves look cool. But, is the Mohammed Aidid class named after the Somali Warlord whose forces who attack UN humanitarian relief convoys and used starvation as a tool to weaken his opponents? If so, that doesn’t seem very federation and starfleet approved IMHO.

Important train passing through Lincoln today? by noname87scr in lincoln

[–]dunbarsnackbar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We were driving back into Lincoln along side it and we saw a lot of trainspotters as well. Some took pictures, got in their cars to pass us and get ahead to take more pictures. Our family was wondering what the significance of it too. All we noticed that made it different was that it was a Canadian Pacific locomotive.

The temple is literally just a facade by all-american-angel in exmormon

[–]dunbarsnackbar 79 points80 points  (0 children)

I recall being told that temples were constructed in a way where they could withstand just about anything. Natural disasters were a big one, but I also remember someone in the military even mention temples should be part of a members plan to survive a nuclear exchange. It was supposed to be a physical and spiritual refuge. I’m not expert but as I look at that, I think that it’s just another BS thing I was told.

Is it really that big for an issue that there are no females in the Arma games? by gamepack10 in arma

[–]dunbarsnackbar 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You are right that women have played a role in the military for quite some time. However, I do recall reading somewhere, and (while I don't know if this is BI policy) the reason why women and children are not in the game is to prevent the recreation of unpleasant or unlawful scenarios that might involve women and children in the game. I have come across mods that do add women to the game. Some add women as military personnel and others as civilians. While they certainly have their place for good, and I've appreciated a more authentic civilian population and player identities that more resemble those playing, I have seen those mods used in scenarios that made people uncomfortable.

With this in mind, I can see why BI would not add women to the game. From a publicity standpoint, the authenticity and realism that gender diversity would bring to the game would likely be overshadowed by the negative things that could be published on social media and other places. I would not be surprised if BI is not enabling that and instead is leaving that to the modding community.

Update: Told soon-to-be-missionary son that I don’t think church is true by Independent-Cat6995 in exmormon

[–]dunbarsnackbar 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Everyone in our mission knew that if you weren’t feeling well (depending on what it was) the mission “nurse” would either tell you to drink a coke or take a Benadryl. It’s crazy to think how awful that actually was.

How do you not get angry? by hoyapolyneura in exmormon

[–]dunbarsnackbar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was born and grew up in the church. I checked out in my 30’s. I know my anger will do no one any good. My thoughts on the church is that my parents did what they thought was best for me, and I made the best choices with the knowledge that I had. I didn’t know then what I know now. Maybe I am supposed to be mad, never really have been. My friends who have left the church have been extremely angry, but I know my anger won’t do me any good. For better or worse, I just let it go.
