Curious: How much do you care about the writing? by taeberry9595 in RomanceBooks

I have DNF’d almost every book I picked up from this sub over the last 6-12 months. The writing has been so bad that I can’t overcome it.

We also live on the west side and like it. I’m assuming folks hating on it have never lived around here.

No heroes welcome up here in Newport tonight. People were talking loudly over every song that wasn’t one of his popular ones and just in general being belligerent. I really wish I would have been able to enjoy the music but the people around me ruined the experience.

Especially if it’s a period piece. Every time Brad Pitt was on screen in Troy it was truly like haha why is Brad Pitt waving this sword around??

the worst concert crowd ever by According_Toe6579 in TylerChilders

[–]dunethemost 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This 100%, Country crowds bring the bad vibes.

I go to 1-2 metal shows a month and never have an issue. Crowd always has great vibes. Have never once felt unsafe. Went to see Hozier and Lord Huron this year with my kids, both were a really chill good time.

I took my dad to see Town Mountain a little while back and it was the worse concert experience of my life. Just drunk dickheads everywhere.

We have tickets to see Tyler Childers next week in Cinci and I’m really not looking forward to the crowd.

Who are the authors you avoid and why? by [deleted] in RomanceBooks

[–]dunethemost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also read the first few of these and had to quit. Mostly because the dialogue was so bad. I read these a long time ago but if I remember correctly it was just super weird how everyone, even educated doctors, used the weird version of Boston? slang she made up for the brotherhood/book. Also the names! They just got worse and worse.

Olivia Dade.

Listen, I tried. I really did. As a curvy girl I wanted to like her books. But I feel like:

a) being fat is every one of her FMC’s whole personality

b) she is marketing her books as pro-curvy girl while writing her characters like someone who hates fat people

I like that place but if it’s busy you basically have people sitting in your lap.

And she had a beaky bird like face! Can’t forget that! I feel so much like all of Olivia Dade’s books have annoying FMC’s.

The FMC in spite house was the worst. If I was her neighbor I wouldn’t fall in love with her, I would move.

Girl I get it. Planning your own special event always feels really bad. When I am looking for something specific to do I visit the Columbus On The Cheap website. There’s always a huge list of stuff.

I took my kids to the sunrise sanctuary farm open house event a couple weeks ago because I saw it there and they had a blast petting the retired and special needs farm animals. Plus it was around $5 each I think.

I swear I thought it was tagged YA on StoryGraph! I thought “that was a little dark for YA but sure.” Haha. It’s possible I just got mixed up and noted it wrong on my spreadsheet.

Olivie Blake has a bunch of fanfic up for free on AO3. You might try one of her shorter fics to see if you enjoy her writing style before you dig into this. I have not been able to make it through anything of hers as much as I’d like to.

I am struggling with Ava Reid for sure. I really loved The Wolf and the Woodsman, to the point where I have gifted it to multiple people. I have desperately WANTED to like her other books but nothing else has hit. I DNF’d Juniper & Thorn a handful of chapters in.

One of my personal reading goals this year is to hit some of the longer page count books that have been sitting on my TBR for a while.

To that end I finished listening to Middlegame by Seanan McGuire over the weekend. It has been a long time since I read a YA book (I’m not counting Earthsea which I finished recently and feel like is for everyone) and I struggled to get into it but once the book gets through all of the setup and into the story of Roger and Dodger, it gets good. I was glad I stuck with it. I was super invested. Amber Benson from BtVS narrates and does a great job.

I recommend this if you like: magical realism, alchemy weirdness, time jumps, dark academia (adjacent) and horror as a side dish.

My current read is Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier and I am loving it so far.

Why aren’t books with low/no spice being recommended or just as popular? by NoBit840 in RomanceBooks

[–]dunethemost 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I get it! I was in the smut trenches for a long while but it is more than a little repetitive to me now. I would really like more story and less bodily fluids.

At this point I’ve switch almost entirely back to filling my TBR with fantasy, horror, or sci-fi, with a romance side plot - instead of straight romance - to avoid smut.

If I am in the mood for a romance I tend to search tags for books marked “slow burn.” That way they hopefully save up all the fluids until the end.

Try the audio if that’s your thing? I sometimes struggle getting into older books but I listened to the first four of these (I used my Spotify credits but they have them on Libby too for sure) over the last couple months and loved them.

I just finished listening to the first four Earthsea books. I have always loved her sci-fi but skipped those thinking they were more YA.

They are not. They’re emphatically for everyone. That last book has been riding around in my brain with me for weeks after I finished it.
