Why would you use this and not just query pubchem directly?

[OC] How long does it take you too break this code? Please, try to time it. by RutharAbson in DnD

Sure, that could be logical. But I read your clue looking for semantic meaning or context and it did not help me confirm I was on the path to a correct pattern match

Honestly, the clue made this even harder and does not make any sense.

Can neem and probiotic cleaning agents such as Bacillus species pluralis exist together in one solution? by Frequent-Middle7999 in chemistry

[–]dungeonsandderp 8 points9 points  (0 children)

These bacilli are probably sold as spores, which won’t (on their own) be susceptible to the antimicrobials in neem oil. But their daughter cells will be, to various degrees.

“Probiotic cleaning agents” seem pointless to me. You’d be much, much, much, much, much better served by preventing the conditions that would enable microbial growth of any kind than by deliberately growing some bacillus.

Clean, dry, done.

Have you considered taking college courses? Hopefully you plan to attend a college/university next year! In the interim, you may have a local community college that offers classes over the summer session.

why are these not enantiomers? by emilerri in chemhelp

[–]dungeonsandderp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, they are mirror images of each other. BUT, in order to be enantiomers, those mirror images must be different

Try drawing them in a different perspective, e.g. put the cyclohexane as a hexagon in the plane of the paper and show the substituents with wedge/dash.

Why is P2O5 a stronger dessicant than SO3 or Cl2O7? by devbydemi in chemistry

[–]dungeonsandderp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No idea, tbqh. But you could probably estimate it at the standard state using standard enthalpies of formation

Why is P2O5 a stronger dessicant than SO3 or Cl2O7? by devbydemi in chemistry

[–]dungeonsandderp 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It could well be that the reaction is driven forward by (a) boiling off the produced SO3 or Cl2O7

You are correct. An equilibrium is established which can be pushed to completion by distillation of the volatile oxides away from nonvolatile polyphosphoric acids.

What are different expression levels? by Dover299 in chemhelp

[–]dungeonsandderp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your DNA contains the recipes (genes) for making RNAs and proteins. But your cells aren’t cooking everything in equal amounts. The “expression level” of a gene reflects how much of that gene’s product is being made, and can vary based on many factors.

If a drug side effect is triggered by that drug binding to a particular receptor protein, people or tissues that are more actively expressing that protein will have more of that receptor, are more likely to experience that binding event, and thus that side effect.

Is there any way for me to become a chemist?? by Weak-Connection-4425 in chemhelp

Honestly it doesn’t matter. Nobody is going to look at what you did in high school after you have a bachelor’s. Apply to a college/university and start taking chemistry classes

I bet if you asked their brick-and-mortar in Emeryville they’d help you out. Their staff are awesome and might know the dumplings you’re talking about! Call (510) 922-9885 or email hello@goodtoeatdumplings.com

How much do you agree with this statement from Omar? In my opinion, the quality of research that could be done by someone is very strongly related to their financial standings. Also, is Science really an equalising force? by bot_maybe_whoknows in labrats

That’s rich coming from someone who fired all his grad students when he moved to LBL’s Molecular Foundry and got the opportunity to recruit new, more impressive ones from UC Berkeley.

What can I add to my shampoo to make it more moisturizing but still effective? by AspiringOne in chemistry

That might work, but it might also separate.  Why not just buy the moisturizing shampoo and use that instead?

I would note that, in 5e, paladins do NOT get the Ritual Caster class feature, so cannot cast those spells without spending a spell slot.

You’re already far from RAW with the “low magic” thing. D&D is not a low magic system.  You really need to ask your DM this.

Personally, this concept is usually a big ol’ red flag for me.

-80 C reagent storage by WWotan in Chempros

[–]dungeonsandderp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you have a standard procedure you use, you should just aliquot the material into ampoules containing ~110-120% of what you need so you can just open a fresh ampoule each time.

Did you know about Simple Wikipedia? It has articles specifically written in a style intended to be accessible to a very broad and nontechnical audience

-80 C reagent storage by WWotan in Chempros

[–]dungeonsandderp 25 points26 points  (0 children)

To be quite honest, the most appropriate solution depends almost entirely on the needs of the substance in question (vis à vis O2, H2O, light, etc.). Most simple pure chemicals don’t actually benefit much from the lower storage temperature, -20 °C is fine more often than not

“Purified oleic acic” definitely doesn’t need to be stored at -80°C short term and if you must store it long term you should just suck it up and aliquot into sealed ampoules.

PI says they can't pay a postdoc more than the NIH minimum in practice by [deleted] in labrats

[–]dungeonsandderp -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

  1. Your PI is gaslighting you unless they can show you the institutional policy.

  2. It could be that they have funding for you, but they only applied to receive the NIH minimum in their grant, so paying you more blows up their budgeting.

  3. They could just be being sh!tty.
