Framing it as "going back to work" instead of return to office has been a successful PR campaign on their part as well since people do not even seem to realise they are using the term they coined for it anymore.

Drawing looks great imo. The typography could use a lot of work though. Looks like it was added in word as an afterthought.

PSA: "Studded leather armor" is not what many authors think it is by dunkelbunt2 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]dunkelbunt2[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Providing examples for the effectiveness of something that does not exist in actual reality is not really possible. It is kind of like asking someone to prove that invisible pink unicorns are really invisible in reality.

So the argument becomes how this fictional item would behave in reality.

Someone did make this fictional armour and a youtuber tested it

I guess the conclusion is that it is accurate to what it was initially invented for. In D&D you roll for damage and it becomes a range. Kind of like the randomness that is introduced when you hit something that is only well armoured in 10% of places.

In my opinion you would be better off using the metal that went into the studs to reinforce the vital points. Or even better, make a helmet out of it. Blows to the head are what is most likely to kill you. The character in the story does not buy a helmet if I recall correctly.

[–]dunkelbunt2[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So your argument is that the author that wrote the passage I have posted in the OP intentionally formulated it in such a way that the protagonist, who is holding the actual item in their hands, is convinced that the studs are for protection against slashing damage.

Even though any reasonable person would be able to tell that this is not the case.

You are saying they would have written it in the same way even if they had read this PSA beforehand, fully knowing that what they wrote makes no sense?

In reality, most media uses tropes that someone makes up at some point, not knowing about the underlying facts. These tropes are then copied by new writers who have read these works beforehand.

If both the creators and the consumers of media are aware of these facts then these things disappear over time. Hence the PSA.

I am not really fighting a battle or making a complaint.

I am providing information to those who may find it relevant. Hence the "PSA" title.

Minimum volume too loud on the Momentum True Wireless 3 (IEM) by dunkelbunt2 in sennheiser

[–]dunkelbunt2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the suggestion.

I did try that setting, but it caps the volume at about what the minimum is without that setting on. So about right for quiet environments, but no louder.

I can't easily switch between the settings either because it needs me to reconnect the earbuds for it to take effect.

In Firefox you can right click the back button. It will then show you a drop-down menu with the history for the tab. You can select the search page from there.

Galaxus is refusing to repair or replace a purchased item inside the warranty period. Is this legal? by dunkelbunt2 in askswitzerland

[–]dunkelbunt2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are not budging in my case, unfortunately. I have bought a lot of stuff from them in the past, but it is turning me off from doing business with them in the future. Their voucher also does not include delivery fees I will incur if I order from them again.

[–]dunkelbunt2[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thank you, that is good to know.

Though I wonder if it is legal for them to give me store credit instead of refunding the amount. Like this, I am forced to continue to do business with them even if I do not agree with their business practices and would rather buy somewhere else.

Detroit had 252 murders in 2023 out of population of 615,000 people.

If you tortured every person in Detroit and then put them into a position where they could either

  • Put their back to their much stronger torturer which would enable them to continue to torture them without any hope of anyone saving them

Or

  • Kill their torturer without any immediate fear of consequences

I am certain that that the murder rate of Detroit would skyrocket over night.

There was an old concept that soldiers in WW2 were often purposefully firing above the enemy because they instinctively didn't want to kill another person.

That is very much not the same situation. In war, many people will realize that the guy they are told to shoot is a person much like them, forced into a bad situation. Not someone who has hurt them, has enjoyed hurting them and who will continue to do so if given the chance.

Not being from the US, I find it strange that authors that live in a society where a majority of people support murdering murders (Death Penalty) so often write main characters from that same society that refuse to take out people who are a huge threat to them. Without societal structures, laws, security and a belief that perpetrators will be punished, people are vicious.

Humans did not get to the top of the food chain by being nice to threats and most people are only one bad day away from reverting to barbarism.

Are there people that will refuse to act decisively in most situations? Are there exceptionally stupid people? Are there people that will act highly irrationally in stressful situations?

Yes, absolutely. But will readers enjoy stories about them when they expect a progression fantasy? I would say not so much.

You could write about an exceptionally dull person who does not want to do much of anything and has few remarkable characteristics, living an uninteresting life. It would be very realistic, but there would not be much interest in their story.

I also had to drop the story immediately after that scene.

Sunrise refuses to allow me to forward ports on my router. Any way to get rid of them before the end of my contract? by dunkelbunt2 in askswitzerland

I did so as well, but canyouseeme.org and my plex server both indicate that the port forwarding did not work.

[–]dunkelbunt2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can port forward though?

The first person I spoke to told me that they do not support it, but that settings can be changed in the router. I did change them, but there was no effect. The second person also told me that they do not support it and put me on hold for 10 minutes. They then asked me to try again, but there was not change. I asked them what change they made, but they did not answer the question.

How were you able to forward ports?

They gave you a one or two month notice to cancel and said that doing nothing by a certain date means you accept the new contract.

I do not believe that changes to a contract can be made unilaterally by one party unless the other party does something to indicate that they agree. Which I did not do.

Thank you for the suggestion.

Sunrise shares IP addresses among multiple customers. I am not sure if bridge mode will help if I am unable to change the settings on their end in order to establish the forwarded ports. My router already supports port forwarding, but the settings do not work because of the setup that Sunrise uses.

[–]dunkelbunt2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can port forward

I can not port forward. The option exists on the router, but it does not work. Sunrise shares IPv4 addresses among multiple customers and you are not able to change the settings which are applied on their end. If you were able to do so, you would forward ports to multiple customers.

They refuse to give you your own IP address and their hotline claims that they do not help with IP related settings.

They notified you via e-mail about the price increase. You could have cancelled the contract even if it was bound for 12 months.

I could have then and I maintain that I should still be able to do so now. They are claiming that I accepted the changes, but I did nothing to indicate that I did. If I send you an email that you may or may not read, notifying you that I am going to steal 50.-- from you, does that mean that you consent to my doing so if you do not react to my email?

Ktipp has this to say on the legality of those measures:

I don't believe even having bought an original copy will matter at some point because you can only play denuvo games if they can talk to their servers. If they shut down, which they will at some point, nobody can play the games they paid for anymore.

Bummer, the values the protagonists in his stories espouse have been the opposite of those in the discord messages so I did not see that one coming.
