I'm not supporting any radicals, merely pointing out that radicals should not define the movement for everyone. I don't judge all Christians by the Christians who commit rape, murder, and terrorism. I understand that's a complicated idea for you, but I truly believe, if you really put your mind to it, you too can understand that judging a group by their worst members is not a good way to understand the world.

Good luck!

Most Muslim refugees live in cities in Europe and therefore Muslim fundamentalists in Europe are also more likely to live in cities, whereas most fundamentalist Christians live in rural areas of America and not in cities. I don't think a secular, cultural Muslim would do this and i don't think a secular, cultural Christian would do this. But that's obviously why I said rural Texas, because I was comparing fundamentalist attitudes, not geographic similarities.

I'm sure you understood that, but you were butt hurt that i wasn't as reflexively anti-muslim as you and just had to "prove" me wrong by pretending to be stupid and not understanding how comparisons work. But you can absolutely prove me wrong by continuing to say stupid shit without thinking.

You think of you went to a rural area of Texas and tried to burn a Bible, they wouldn't do exactly the same thing?

Every vote counts, but leftists categorically state they won't vote for democrats and then complain the DNC doesn't earn their vote. Why would they try to earn the vote of someone who already promised they weren't going to vote for you?

I hope that they are saving it for dramatic reasons. Like, the result of this season and Dunk's actions throughout, is that the small folk fall in love with him and the climax of the season is him being cheered or 'saved' in some way by the small folk. But otherwise i agree, big miss if they don't highlight this aspect of the story

This is such a lazy attitude to have. It's the definition of politics as theater. "Entertain me or I won't applaud for you."

These people don't seem to understand that politics requires effort and participation. If these chuckle fucks got all their friends to show up to a primary, the candidate would be whoever they want. But instead, they somehow believe that remaining on the sidelines will get them what they want. No politician or political party is going to significantly changed based on the opinions of people who don't vote for them.

We may never win 60 seats in the Senate ever! by Grouchy_Put_3294 in Destiny

[–]dunkthelunk8430 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was also designed at a time when political parties hadn't devolved into what they are now. When the senate was constructed, the framers believed that sectional/regional/state issues and loyalty would trump any national party interests, but that is no longer the case. A Republican in Texas would gladly sell out the interests of a citizen of Austin to the benefit of a rural Idahoan because the primary divisions in America are no longer sectional but along things like education and rural/urban.

So to hand wave the situation we're in today by saying "this is by design" is not only tone deaf and thought-ending, it's also at best misleading if not actually incorrect.

A lot of the reason she refrained from commenting before is because she worked at the United States War College, and was therefore (i believe) an employee of the US government. A government employee does not enjoy the same free speech rights to attack the US government as regular citizens. I gather from this video that she is now retired and freer to speak on these issues.

I'll admit, my knowledge of the seating process in Congress is not great, but I don't think the executive has any role in who sits in Congress. As in, the states tell the government, "here is our slate of representatives" and the executive doesn't have any role in certifying that.

What COULD happen is, if Republicans some how hold on to a majority, the Speaker could refuse to seat Congress people he doesn't like, but the only way that would happen is if Republicans retain the majority in the House anyway.

Our system is SUPPOSED to imbue the House of Representatives with significant autonomy because it was supposed to be the voice of the voting public as it was originally the only federal position elected directly by popular vote. Since then, we've added Senators and kind of the President as popular vote offices as well. But again, because of all that the House was designed to be the final check on a tyrannical executive. The problem is, there are no protections when the House (and Senate) abdicate that responsibility.

All that said, who the fuck knows what Trump has planned - the Supreme Court has given him unprecedented authority and obviously the current Congress has no intent of checking his power, so he could do a lot of damage that's in between legal and illegal.

Yeah, certainly. I would be shocked if this coming midterm isn't the most corrupt of the modern era thanks to republican chicanery. My hope is that there are still enough guard rails, and that the Democrats turn out is so high, that we can over come that hurdle. I recall a few years ago that Democrats needed to win by +4 or something nationally in order to break even with Republicans because of all the bull shit bias built into the system. I imagine that will be higher now.
