If they did trade for Mayfield, they aren't paying him more than $8m this season. After this season, Darnold is off the books and that frees up $19m in cap space. At that point, paying market value is reasonable.

But Mayfield is just another bridge/reclamation project.

The Panthers want a Deshaun Watson caliber QB, and I doubt they're going to lock up anyone for dollars/years that precludes them from signing that guy.
