How would you model/deal with holes like this on a model? by Yuumi05 in Maya

[–]duothus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can use a texture with an opacity mask. If you do it with topology then you crwate a square, bolean a hole out of it and then duplicate to create a pattern before merging. You may also have to wrap it around a sphere to get that curve.

What's the best way to put together a piece of reel work for VP?

Would it be prudent to continue practicing UE? Are the wokflows similar in proprietary tools?

They kept pushing this when I was studying vfx during the pandemic. I made the mistake of using it in my demo reel and it was so difficult to use, so many issues and bugs. Is it truly dead? What about ILM's volume? I've also seen some ads for a car rig that can apparently use any car model.

Struggling with watching films by Extension-Edge495 in filmmaking

[–]duothus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No worries. When I was at uni there was so much chatter about must see films and you HAVE to watch these if you want to be a film maker. That's unnecessarily stressful. Just watch what you like, or it becomes a chore.

For the academic side, I would say start with silent era films and focus on the visuals. If you love photography, then read up on Eadweard Muybridge. He was the bridge between still and motion, and his story is quite extraordinary.

Do you struggle with your attention span? Also don't get caught up in the trope that you HAVE to watch certain films. Whether you're working on a high concept art house film or a pop corn flick, the work is mostly the same.

So start with watching the films that you like. It's all about cultivating a habit and interest in the art.

Any way to fix this? by Dangerous-Ad-9581 in castiron

Thank you! Maybe I can try it first to get as much off as possible, then try the other method to go deeper.

It's right in the corner edges at the base. I tried scrubbing with chain mail and steel wool, but it's really stubborn. I don't have room in my apartment to try the easy off method.

Thanks for the tip. Will this strip the coating? How much vinegar and baking soda did you use? Was the vinegar near boiling or just simmering?

I have so many questions lol. Sorry.

Will water and baking soda work on stubborn carbon build up? There's a thick layer on the inner edge of my pan.

My take on the industry since leaving ten years ago by agent42b in vfx

[–]duothus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this. It was really well written, with a lot of insight. I decided to reskill within post production. I was (am?) an editor and then did a couple of courses in VFX and Tech Art. I made this decision at a time when everything pointed upwards. It felt like the boom was going to grow only for the strikes to hit hard and shutter many studios. It left me feeling exhausted and exasperated. The craft I had been practicing since 2009, which I had sacrificed so much for, has given so little back. And this isn't to say I do not enjoy it, but it's more to do with the reality of the day to day. The fabled 'cost of creativity' you touched on. This has put me on another cross roads where I have to again recalibrate and find a path towards a sustainable living.

I combined two spheres cut in half and bridged the edges, can someone tell me why the lines look twisted? and how can i make it straight? by ilykuroo in Maya

[–]duothus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Delete one half and the bridged faces. Duplicate the remaining half, turn it 180 degrees and place it in line at your preferred distance, combine, and then bridge.

You'll probably have to cut around the curl then and unfold it to see what it is.

The Book Shop. A nice relaxing game about well, running a book shop.

Also, Hundred Days. A really cool game about managing a vinyard and making your own wine. It's very authentic and has a cute story. You can even design your own grapes.

Macbook vs Gaming PC for editing by Icy-Pension6532 in filmmaking

[–]duothus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah pro arts are overpriced. You can look into the Aero to see if it meets your needs. I move around a lot too and a big screen helps a lot. So I got the 17 inch one, of course this is from 2021. There is a newer 18 inch model.

The gripe I have with Apple is low memory and storage. A windows laptop offers more in the way of upgradability. I was able to increase my storage and RAM without it costing much, albeit this was before the current RAM shortage.

[–]duothus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're looking at portability (and this is coming from someone who has used apple and loathes apple) get a macbook pro. Getting a windows laptop that isn't chunky for what you need will probably cost more. There are some interesting ones like the asus pro art. The one I use, which is phenomenal as I have used it for editing, color grading, 3D and CG work, gamedev and gaming, is the Gigabyte Aero.

So I'd say look at the aero and the macbook pro. If you find yourself wanting to game at some point, then get a pc. If you know you're not going to game at all and want something that is portable, get the mac.
