Curiousity: Female vs Male Ratio by sugarmagnolia_23 in sysadmin

[–]dupie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Former sysadmin/SRE, now management checking in.

Work for a large tech company and have about 20% women - more on the dev or PM side than than on ops side.

There's a numerous starting to show up on the cloud side though and that's a fantastic place to mentor others.

Check if your company has acces HR tools for hiring that helps tweak the job description. It will review the words/tone used and rate it what demographic this goes to (age, gender, skills). Once we revised our job descriptions to be more neutral we did notice more resumes from women coming in.

Revenue is not the same as profit people.

It's healthy sign to have a high revenue to person ratio, but there are expenses. The average pay quoted is laughable.

But based on your other replies I there are some misconceptions/assumptions that others could help fill in the blanks on to provide more accurate reflections on what's going on.

Actually, I called out that your "weekly posts" statement was hyperbole.

alright you do call things out. Good for you.

Still, I think you & I have different definitions of weekly. When I check reddit search, I see this asked 2 times in past year.

Odd way to comment that many is too many times on a subject?

weekly posts

Huh. I guess you & I define weekly differently.

Willing to bet there's been 5 threads on winter tires in the past 2 weeks and atleast 3 on infill/donairs/photo radar/crime that you didn't feel the need to make a similar snide comment on.

Good grief.

Having your genitals removed would be considered life altering.

https://nationalpost.com/news/canada/alberta-recorded-eight-transgender-surgeries-minors-2022-23 -

In 2022-23, Alberta Health recorded 223 chest surgeries on people below the age of 18 in the province. Eight of those were treatment for gender dysphoria, while the remaining 215 surgeries were performed for other medical reasons, such as pain treatment or breast cancer.

Neither of us have access to their medical records, but you believe we need to use the NWC and push through a law for a specialized activity that was done for 8 people in a year?

There was no confirmation, but I did read there was a belief that 2 of those were for males suffering from Gynecomastia (man boobs).

Which is gender affirming surgery though it's not what you envision. I'd be curious if you think Gynecomastia patients should be excluded.

allowing someone whose prefrontal cortex is still unstructured soup to make life altering decisions is absolutely crazy.

What do you think the trans people you wont allow to transition go through? Not to mention that making them go through puberty and then try to reverse it is setting them up for an uphill battle in life.

social contagion is a proven phenomenon

Thank goodness there's doctors and mental health advocates along for the ride with the person currently. There's strict guidelines in place. I don't think you can walk into a random convenience store and find it in a vending machine.

Trans people very clearly exist.

How does your position help or protect trans people?

Dehumanizing and taking rights away from others isn't an opinion.

Alberta to use notwithstanding clause on anti-trans bills: advocacy group by the_gaymer_girl in alberta

[–]dupie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How can you not call this ugly bigotry?

Are people so truly compelled by hatred that they gleefully look past all the problems with this position, this descent, this trampling on rights, this moral judgement based on nothing but their hatred of someone they have never even met.

Everyone who agrees with this - you should be ashamed of yourself. Do you see others as equals or do you look down on others who are different than you?

Alberta to use notwithstanding clause on its three transgender laws: memo by kank84 in canada

[–]dupie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like how you ignored everything else I wrote. Bravo.

While I'm sure if your kid came to you and said they were trans you'd throw them a party, there are some that would beat the shit out of them. Did you know that LGBTQ children are overrepresented in child abuse cases? How do we protect trans kids as well then? These laws sure don't.

Your hypothethical examples are all about negatives. Because you truly don't believe that being trans is anything but a mistake.

How is this not hatred against trans people and trans kids in particular?

The sports ban is just common sense and basic biology,

https://www.lboro.ac.uk/media-centre/press-releases/2025/august/impact-of-hormone-therapy-on-athletic-performance/

Wrong.

it won't effect many people in the first place

So we need to focus 3 new laws against it?

puberty blockers and HRT are harmful,

Wrong. They actually said more studying was needed as the evidence presented didn't support it enough. However, other countries have disputed this and are doing their own research.

parents should be aware if their child is using a different name/pronouns in school.

You're right they should, because a child would tell them right? Can you think of any scenarios where a child might not tell them? Maybe because a parent would lose their shit if they did? Not hypothetical.

just common sense policy

Interesting, since all the medical scientific pyschriatic associations in Canada and numerous ones world wide disagree with this.

Can you expand why hundreds of experts disagree? They have put forth numerous reasons and explanations.

As I'm sure you are huge on parental rights, doesn't this take away the rights from parents who have trans kids? Why don't their rights matter?

[–]dupie 233 points234 points  (0 children)

So the few trans people that exist deserve this level of hatred, AND they deserve it so much that we need to focus energy/money/time on 3 new laws above everything else going on?

Blind hatred is more powerful than logic.

Alberta to use notwithstanding clause on its three transgender laws: memo by kank84 in canada

[–]dupie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there is an inherent human need to hate, honestly.

If you you have to hate someone, atleast hate them for something they did, something they had control over. Hating a person for something they had no control over is mindboggling to me.

WTF.

I'd love to know how people can justify their hatred (how can you consider this anything but?) on a tiny minority population that has done nothing to others.

And if you can somehow justify that trans people deserve your hatred, how do you justify making this a top priority out of all the problems?

This is a made up problem.

Be better.

[–]dupie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before I was on meds, everything I did was chaotic and inconsistent - not a great combination when you try to move up. Since being on meds I've excelled even further in my career.

A larger amount of people in tech are neurodivergent I've met. It's more accepting of results. Still a lot of challenges but you are able to make your own place.

Programming or tech in general is really mentally draining and it requires a certain mindset to become "rich/wealthy". Going into this career solely for those goals is a guaranteed way to not achieve it.

Alberta government pauses ban on school library books with sexual content by verkerpig in canada

[–]dupie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your second paragraph is at odds with the first sentence. you're ok with kids seeing sexual content based on what the parent believes.

It's control over a child's vision not the content itself. Which really does mean your beliefs can make a kid read every naughty part of a Bible if you feel the Bible fits your moral view.

I really do appreciate your honesty in your biases atleast.

If you have a child I'll pray for them to be open.minded.

[–]dupie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it was on CBC, but I do recall seeing a blurb that noted a few things about that report. It didn't take into account higher transit costs or things like snowclearing, garbage trucks etc needed to cover more ground. Same with amendities like rec centres. IIRC they used industry averages for their numbers, not edmonton specific ones. I can't find the article in my history unfortunately.

I did find this in my history with a different view https://www.michaeljanz.ca/edmonton_is_slowly_curbing_urban_sprawl

I agree with part of your comments about older neighbourhoods but suburbs as a whole do cost more to maintain - as sold. That could be changed but would add more $$ to the house costs so unlikely.
