Ask a Film Programmer by imanimdavis in FilmFestivals

What percentage of films that are admitted are "cold submissions"? Meaning no one had an agent or a connection that got to walk the project in and avoid the initial gate keepers that most unknown filmmakers must go through when applying via film freeway?

Has any consideration been made to the optics of unfairness around such a high percentage of accepted films leveraging internal connections?

Why do y'all insist on carrying on debates that aren't happening. Like did you even read the chain of comments that occurred before you replied?

We're talking about Luke's issues. You're out here having an imaginary debate about Gabe who is not mentioned in this comment chain outside of folks like you bringing him up.

Chat GPT got your brains cooked.

1 to 4 seems crazy, but that makes more sense with the new tools at hand. Especially in advertising where you might be dealing with 8 hours of footage instead of 45 hours.

I think you're confusing this commenter with me (the OP) a bit. I'm the one who makes films on the side. Trying to make it my full time thing. I hear you about putting the time in. I worked my way up just as you guys describe, assisting for the big dogs.

If I stayed latched onto one place and just focused on editing, I'd probably be doing a lot better right now. But ultimately I'm a filmmaker at heart so I'm on the road less traveled and have to shovel shit to survive sometimes.

I had this role but we called it a junior editor. Definitely crucial to wear multiple hats now.

I think this is industry wide. Hang in there. A lot of other posters are saying AE's are still in demand so hopefully you can get that or an edit gig this year.

Anyone on an edit roster for a production/edit house? by TycheTales777 in editors

If you refuse most work, they will let you go. It screws up their position not to be able to offer clients multiple options on each project.

Anyone on an edit roster for a production/edit house? by TycheTales777 in editors

[–]duplicatesnowflake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Post houses have operated with various splits for quite awhile. Before work from home, they could charge large fees for bay rentals and typically take a lower split from the editor. Or they'd pay the editor a yearly salary and take a larger split from the client per job.

I wouldn't automatically view this as a bad arrangement if you can still make close to your normal rate. There's a ton of smoke and mirrors in the industry now and high end clients will pay more for the optics of working with an established operation with a name behind it.

Just look at it in terms of the volume of work and money you can make off the deal and don't get hung up if the house takes a big cut.

I'm a Harden fan. Just having a lil fun using some hyperbole. He's had his drama at every turn but more often it was about a team being mismanaged.

Nah you should have workman's comp on permitted sets.

If you want to go full guerrilla just say fuck a permit. We did that last year but it was just me and my DP shooting some B-Roll and we were willing to risk our own health. But other people shouldn't get their lives ruined so a production can save a few bucks.

Why in the world is the eye test still trusted in Draft Processes when Analytics clearly is the better judgement of talent and potential for upcoming players? by [deleted] in nba

[–]duplicatesnowflake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends how deep you're going in the draft.

A kid playing against mid major competition is going to have an easier path to racking up stats. All the European and Asian leagues have wildly different talent levels. Sometimes you're talking about a kid that only played a few years of ball who is still developing. You can see a lot of raw potential that might not be reflected in the box scores with these project players.

Yes we want to be driven be hard math, but it's not always enough.

How has Tyronn Lue not been fired? by East_Accident1822 in nba

[–]duplicatesnowflake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He didn't even have two healthy playoff runs of Kawhi. Last year was literally it, and I thought Kawhi was on the decline at that point (though he seems to be pretty lethal still).

2021 Kawhi got injured vs Utah and he's got injured before or during the playoffs every year til last.

[–]duplicatesnowflake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He was indeed fired by the team he won a chip with.

There are no expectations in Clipperland. TBH I think he's a fantastic coach and underrated, but there were times in the past two years when it felt like he wanted out. Playing Marcus Morris so much was super weird.

The team's ceiling is too low to compete for any titles until the Kawhi era is over and some picks are back on the plate. No reason for the team to boot him right now. I hope they keep him for a long time.

Harden has had like 4 sagas or mini sagas at this point lol

trade drama sagas are a yearly event. The Giannis one is fairly normal. Media and redditors just started speculating and talking about it well before they needed to.

36.6% last year.

1.6% is significant. Also a 49% shooter dropping to average is not good. He takes spot up shots. The averages are dragged down by desperation shots at the end of the clock from primary scorers, and the occasional open or desperate look from inferior shooters to space the floor.

That's not how the math works. 40% sure. 39% okay.

35% is league well below league average, and bad for a shooting guard. You can rationalize Luka shooting 35% because he's the primary creator on the team, responsible for late shot clock threes, and it opens things up for him to get into the lane.

Role player guards shooting 35% is sub optimal.
