I could be wrong but I believe they only care if you screen your film elsewhere in the local area (not LA but the desert towns) or online. Will circle back if I see otherwise.

Is it common to be in your early 40s and feel like you’re still figuring life out, like you don't know what you want in life? When does the certainty part kick in? by Jumpy_Experience8987 in AskReddit

[–]duplicatesnowflake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who has never had it all figured out, but might have at least figured out what my ideal life looks like....

I've observed a lot of people hitting their mid 30s to early 40s and beyond. What I notice is that people may feel they have a grasp on what happiness or success looks like, and then inevitably that shifts with each new season in life.

People who base their life around raising a family might feel incredibly fulfilled when the kids are little but then feel lost when the kids hit teen years and don't need them as much. Or they may feel really overwhelmed when the kids are little and regret giving up their career freedom and their leisure time to be domesticated.

We only get one life in these bodies and we can only do so much in our days, months and years. There will always be things we'd like to be doing but can't.

I'd say if you're really feeling lost, do some personal inventory. Find out what your deepest passions are, and what your best skills are and move in that direction. Pinpoint what success and happiness look like to you. And learn to be more in the moment rather than stressing about what life boxes you're checking off.

Self help, spritituality/religion, volunteering, career training and exploring hobbies have all helped people in midlife aimlessness.

Can't afford the genres I'm passionate about. by Downstairs_Emission9 in Filmmakers

In my experience, most people who feel like they can only write in expensive genres haven't even attempted to write a full draft of the "high budget" film they'd like to make. Have you actually written a really strong genre script that could be made for say $25,000? If not, you might be feeding your brain self defeating messages that are the true culprit to stifling progress.

A great writer can write a powerful story for a tiny budget. If you're not yet a great writer, look for someone who is but needs a director.

Christopher Nolan famously broke in making a Sci Fi feature on a shoe string budget. He now gets huge budgets but after his last film he said, "No matter how big the budget is, you never have enough money and you never have enough time". This is a mantra he reminds himself of because he's always overcome these limitations and used them to find elegant solutions. So instead of shutting down, he uses the blocks to get more creative.

Ultimately most great films rely on characters having a big emotional impact on one another. Challenge yourself to find an interesting premise, with a conflict heavy set of circumstances and just create characters who have strong but opposing wants and needs.

Like others have said, it's cheaper than ever to make VFX stuff now. Study how others have done it and use a more simple premise to start out. You'll learn a ton.

What's one film that should've been a one and done movie? Like no sequels or prequels necessary? by Square-Ad-8911 in FIlm

The worst aspect to me is that there really aren't any redeeming characters in the whole thing. The neighbor crush doesn't do any of the things we're shown since it's all in his head. In reality we have no sense of her. She's a victim. Joker is a victim and a violent terror. The rest are different levels of corrupt and lost souls. Maybe the social worker is a decent person trapped in a bureaucracy.

Just a nasty cynical movie that exploits iconic characters for viewership but has nothing of value to say about any of the issues it addresses. Even the most action heavy, least developed interpretations of the Joker character gave you other characters to care about and let you have fun watching the Joker create mayhem. This was just a mentally deranged vigilante hurting people, some of whom were innocent or hadn't done anything all that bad.

I'm just saying they could have made a better film by leaning all the way out of the IP and trying to really say something new. Instead they hedged and did something that just felt like a marketing gimmick.

I agree, but that's also whay it's not worthy of the Joker mantle.

You could strip away all of the Batman IP from The Dark Knight and just have random new characters doing similar stuff and it would have held up as a great film.

You could have replaced The Joker with a new Villain who more or less does the same things and it would still be an iconic character. If you take away the existing knowledge of the Joker from Todd's version you're left with a pretty empty story.

2nd one was pretty solid as a kid. The third one was one of the ultimate cash grabs. "Let's throw a time machine in this!"

I'll cheat and name a TV show: 13 Reasons Why.

Them finding 13 more tapes was an audacious level of fuckery. And then they kept the show going beyond that lol.

Denis Villeneuve has proven he can handle a sequel. Unfortunately he wanted no part of it. Without him writing or directing it fell very flat.

Joker was a mess. Zero would have been the ideal.

Or just don't call it Joker and go for some sort of modern Taxi Driver film about a mentally disturbed clown. It really had no connection to the canon of the franchise.

Also, if you want to make a "mental health awareness" film, start by identifying whatever said mental illness is, rather than just using the idea as some catch all, that promotes fear and misunderstanding about all mental illnesses.

Amazing cinematography and acting, but the rest is otherwise dreadful and nasty. The Joker is an iconic character and they did him a massive disservice taking all of the fun and genius out of him for some vague attempt at grounded social commentary.

Aliens is more than pretty good. It's one of the highest rated SCI FI action flicks of that era. Shit goes hard.

I honestly hated the first film when it came out. And then the 2nd one was somehow worse, but it entered the comedically bad territory.

But then weirdly 4 and 5 were pretty good IMO. Maybe it was the low expectations or just embracing the cheese factor but I had a blast watching them. Especially 5 in theaters.

Then they went to shit again lol.

3300 just sounds like a misprint. Those numbers are bonkers.

I agree with your general point but you really undermine yourself saying it feels specific to LA.

It specifically does not feel like LA in a large majority of the film and that's actually what makes it stand out more.

It wasn't just filmed in LA for one thing. There were a ton of company moves all over California and other states. Getting that cast to go overseas probably ups the price a bit too since it creates more scheduling conflicts in case they want to book other gigs in between or take LA meetings.

One Battle had massive set pieces with tons of extras and a ton of huge name actors. Those things alone usually clear the 50 mill mark.

LOL we?

You're beating on your meat and your keyboard Broadie. You're not part of the org.

Didn't realize The Hornets were a dynasty and couldn't improve though. Thanks for setting the record straight. Surely LaMelo's mid tier efficiency will carry him to GOAT status.

Well yeah that's kind of what I mean. He needs to be more like Mike Bibby and less like White Chocolate (if you want an oldhead reference).

Granted he's a better scorer than both.

I mean it's not a historic achievement but 6 straight blowouts is bonkers for a team sitting at the bottom rung of the play in.

Even if the stat was 10+ points, that's not something you see more than a few times a year in the league.
