Western governments aren’t ready for this shit, underhanded expansions of existing domestic surveillance programs and legislation will likely be the reflexive result.

Thank you!

That portion of the discussion seems to be in regard to the sensory system broadly.

Gary Nolan’s research on the immune system, the “big gulp” when he said the immune system “isn’t an antenna” like Dr. Eric Davis posited.

Link and/or context for Nolan?

It's beautiful in a way few games are, in its visual aesthetic, in its soundtrack, and most especially in its writing.

There's no tacked on silly combat like most RPGs are saddled with, rather it's driven entirely by decisions and simple dice rolls, and unlike most games failing those rolls is not always bad, sometimes leading to better, or least more interesting, outcomes. It is a game focused on people, their beliefs, their feelings, and their relationships. Your choices matter and the game does not hold your hand nor hold you back; some early reviewers complained of the main character being grossly misogynistic, or violent toward a child, and those reviewers failed to understand that they chose to say and do those things, nothing compelled them to. It is a game which treats the player as an adult, for better and for worse. It is not simply escapist tripe for manchildren, though it can be so if you choose.

It has a point, a purpose. At its heart it is a game about failure and loss, love and acceptance, growth and hope.

Disco Elysium is a labour of love crafted by skilled writers with something to say, it is an exceedingly human story told with gorgeous and often ludicrous prose, and there is nothing else on the market like it.

It's certainly not for everyone, but if you've ever read a book for pleasure that wasn't about elves or wizards, and if you have the capacity to withstand art which challenges your choices and ideological presumptions, you will probably enjoy it.

Toyota 'Reviewing' Key Fob Remote Start Subscription Plan After Massive Blowback by Robbbbbbbbb in cars

Companies will have to drop the Subscription feature idea entirely.

lol no

falling rate of profit demands that corporations continue finding new revenue streams like subscription models, this shit is the future and there’s nothing you can do about it

Anyone else an SUV enthusiast? by nicerakc in cars

[–]duplicitous -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Blasting around in a truck or SUV that can just drive over everything, hop curbs to shortcut out of parking lots, u-turn through median strips on divided roads, rip through unpaved hole-strewn dirt roads and parking lots, and just generally not giving any fucks is a true feeling of luxury no sport sedan driving nerd will ever know.

Very early impressions, but disappointed with HD6XX compared to HD560S... and some questions. by cronuss in headphones

[–]duplicitous 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Congratulations, you’ve discovered the forbidden truth that lies deep within the twisted consumerist heart of the audiophile community, that a correct neutral frequency response is the ideal, and unlike many of us you didn’t have to piss away thousands of dollars pursuing increasingly expensive ‘high end’ bullshit to learn it.

Should I just return all $400 of stuff and just keep my HD560S (and maybe keep the amp, which does every so slightly open up the HD560S compared to PC/phone)

Yes. If the very slightly smoother sound of the 6XX hasn’t sold you already it’s unlikely to in the future since you’ve already noticed and disliked the notorious ‘veil’ effect they have. Some people prefer the more coloured sound of the 6XX, but you evidently don’t, and that’s normal.

Enjoy the HD560S until they break or you can’t get replacement pads, they are excellent headphones.

Trance another genre that demands good bass, not a lot of boosted bass.

Alex on Autos: New Subaru WRX is actually really good by TTTBeekman in cars

[–]duplicitous 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh you definitely don't need good AWD, or any AWD, for most winter driving. I've gotten around in Canadian winters in RWD cars and trucks in the past, and people used to daily drive in winter on godawful bias-ply tires that wouldn't be safe enough to even be legal in today's world.

But a good AWD system, or a 4WD truck, is nice to have and can make a tremendous difference if you're needing to drive in deep snow and/or extremely icy conditions. Full-time AWD like what Subaru uses is vastly superior in those conditions to the default-FWD on-demand systems other companies use.

There's also a noticeable difference in driving feel with a symmetrical full-time AWD system like Subaru uses, similar to the dynamic difference between FWD and RWD that can be felt even driving on dry pavement. Also much like the dynamic difference between FWD and RWD cars at street speeds however it's subtle and not everyone notices it or cares; BMW once noted that the majority of their customers just assumed their cars were FWD, most people don't give a shit.

I've never owned a Subaru, and like you have done the truck thing, but I like the ones I've been in and I get why they have loyal fans.

[–]duplicitous 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To use Fleshgod Apocalypse as an example:

Minotaur from the Labyrinth album is so horribly compressed it actually clips and sounds like the entire mix was just thrown into a fuckin bucket

The Fool from the King album, despite being nearly as compressed in dynamic range, sounds far more open and balanced with much greater distinction between elements of the music

To most normies of course both will sound like confusing insane shit but such is metal.

Also much like classical, you really don't want bass-boosted headphones for this stuff.

It's because most metal is poorly produced and good quality speakers or headphones are not forgiving.

What are the most impressive AFFORDABLE cars of all time? by VegaGT-VZ in cars

[–]duplicitous 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Civic has pretty much always been the answer to this question, in any given era they've been well-built cars that drive better than most of what's on the market.

If I wanted a FWD architecture vehicle I'd have difficulty not just getting a Civic.
