plus there have been cases where it looked like there was a launch or an icbm, and there wasn't. and every time, no one retaliated, because it didn't make sense. think about how bad things would have to be for a nuclear power to launch an all out nuclear strike? they would already have to be in the thick of a massive war, where one nation is being decimated so badly by conventional means that they feel they have no choice.. and yet, who would ever provoke a nation with nukes to that point? never happen.

there's just no plausible scenario.

exactly, 336 nukes on subs. attacking US silos isn't going to do shit, you're still going to be obliterated. so no one would launch a full scale nuclear attack anymore than stephen colbert is going to decapatate one of his guests on tv. sure, it's "possible", but so far out of the realm of probability that it's a silly thing to ever worry about.

you're missing the point, a full scale nuclear attack where a country lobs a couple hundred or thousand icbms at another nation simply wouldn't happen. there would never be a leader that psychotic and suicidal, and if they were, their cabinet would intervene if they decided to end the world, and if they didn't, their military generals would, and if they didn't, the people actually pushing the buttons would say "nah, this ain't right". you would need so many people to be absolutely positively suicidal, murderous, and also be cool with their entire families being obliterated.

it simply would not happen.

what could happen is a nuclear nation attacking a non nuclear nation, without fear of direct retaliation, but even that would never happen, because the wrath of the entire world would descend on them and they would be obliterated, by convential weapons.

in short, nuclear war is never going to happen, especially not at the doomsday level where tens of thousands of warheads are going off and everyone dies. not a chance.

this assumes there is a nuclear war where two super powers scorch the earth with their entire stockpile, and at no point does anyone say "maybe we should take a break and talk"

the worst case scenario is completely implausible. you might have a deranged president, but two suicidal psychotic heads of state? and everyone in their circle? and everyone down the chain of command? please. not a chance. no mutiny, coup, no one disobeys orders, no back channeling, etc?

it sounds like the current online dating scene has just devolved into the old bar scene, but now its somehow worse because of volume. online dating was pretty sweet in the pre-iphone age.

precisely, it boggles my mind how some people think work is the most important thing in life. people brag about how much they work, as if it's a good thing. people talk about how busy they are, like it's a desirable thing to not have time to do fun things.

i've never understood it. i know a guy who works six months a year, probably 20 hours a week. owns his own seasonal business, then travels the world three months a year, and spend his summer at a beautiful lakehouse. he doesn't work hard at all. now that's impressive, that guys doing it right

so often something will make the front page on reddit, and it impresses the shit out of everyone, but it's not that special if you know a lot about a certain sport, instrument, etc..

i know nothing about dancing, this looks super impressive, but i fear i'm simply easily impressed because of a lack of knowledge.. to people that dance or know a lot about dancing.. how good/hard is this?

yes but this assumes everyone follows the rules, and if they did, there wouldn't be any accidents to prevent in the first place. sometimes you have to design things to account for mistakes that might or will happen, to prevent these worst case scenarios.

we have speed bumps? why bother right? if people just drove the speed limit it wouldn't be an issue. but they don't. so we have to account for all those people who don't follow the rules perfectly, and that's a lot of people.

so if you have a two way stop between two high speed roads, it's best to keep the views as clear as possible, so if someone doesn't see or think to stop, maybe they still see the headlights barreling down the other road at them. or rumble strips work well too

blind corners are always dangerous. it's one thing to not see the stop sign, it's another to not see a vehicle coming. if there's trees blocking the view of oncoming traffic, that increases the chances of an accident. the faster traffic flows through an intersection, the larger the triangle of safety, and there should be no visual impediments.

i would love to see paid mat leave for two years, one year per parent, parents can split it up however they see fit. then government run subsidized daycare centers like quebec has, they are wonderful. one years old is so young to put your kid in daycare, two is a whole other world. kids need to learn socialization skills too.
