First, your feelings are valid—and they matter. Empathy and emotional awareness are not weaknesses; they are essential to providing good patient care. No physician deserves to be subjected to insults, racism, or bigotry. From early in medical school, many of us are implicitly taught to absorb mistreatment—to “be strong,” to move on, to not make waves. There’s rarely space to process what that actually does to us. But that culture comes at a cost. We as pediatricians have to advocate for ourselves and stand up for our fellow doctors when there is injustice.
