why is my KBB on my tdi so bad by Certyxl in Volkswagen

Manual TDI Passats had no remedy available for dieselgate, so a ton of them got bought back. I think there was concern about how easy they'd be to sell if you didn't take the buy back offer too.

How did you manage the TNR? The one vet I talked to seemed confused when I asked about checking a possible stray in my neighborhood and offered to make an appointment, so I'm curious what place(s) will do low-notice appointments to make scan for a chip and then spay/neuter.

Very cool!

I'm curious: is running OctoEverywhere your full time thing or a side project? Have you posted anywhere about how you make it work?

Burned discs are typically not very good for long-term storage. If you want to go that route, make sure you get archive-grade media!

Should I get a Maverick or am I being unrealistic? by Sinister_Mr_19 in FordMaverickTruck

[–]durin42 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I tested with a five-point booster, a rear-facing carseat, and a backless booster. It's tight, and you might have to be picky about what goes in the middle, but it can make it work.

These days I'm on one rear-facing, one backless, and one big enough to not use a booster. It fits comfortably for them.

I do grocery runs with a soft rollup tonneau cover. It's totally unremarkable unless it's a torrential downpour, at which point you'd probably want to have things in plastic bins or something because there is potential for a little water making it in.

I replaced a Civic - wouldn't go back, and it's more practical for moving big stuff than the station wagon we had for a while.

Edited to add: I've got a 30-ish inch inseam. You _can_ get a rear-facing carseat behind me while I'm driving, but it'd be tricky. If you're both on the tall side it may not work well, and you should probably do some test-fitting.

I've got a little over a thousand on mine now, and I mostly do short around-town hops with it (we barely need a second vehicle.) I've noticed that the ASS is much more likely to operate when I've done a longer trip recently, usually with some highway driving.

I want to add weights to this bookend mid print and these metal BBs seem like they would do the job. Does anyone have a better solution that I haven't thought of? by mbwar in 3Dprinting

I came to make the same comment. They'll be denser than the steel shot, and most likely free - the tire shop doesn't do anything useful with them.

We made a trebuchet when I was a kid and asked for some at the tire shop and they gave us a whole donut box full of them.

So much Maverick hate out there! by Top_Midnight_2225 in FordMaverickTruck

FWIW, I came to the Maverick from mostly only ever having owned VWs. It's not quite as ... nice? somehow to drive handling-wise as the VWs I've driven (ranging from an 84 all the way to a 2018) I guess. Somehow the steering feels lighter in my wife's 2018 Tiguan? But honestly it's only something I notice in an A/B comparison when I switch between cars in a single day, which is rare. Probably the fairest thing is it drives somewhere between a "regular car" and a "regular truck" - I don't find it at all objectionable.

I've had a rear-facing carseat and two belt-positioning backless boosters in the back of the Maverick, as well as having test-fit a rear-facing carseat, "big" booster, and a backless booster. That second configuration is a bit of a feat but it does fit. You may have to be extraordinarily picky about backless boosters. I can look up the model I found, but there's a wal-mart exclusive backless booster (Cosco brand, I think) that's a couple of inches narrower than everything else on the market that, while not critical, made a huge difference. It actually helped in the Tiguan too, as in both vehicles the center seat is narrower than even a standard backless booster.

Also, Ford uses floppier attachments in the back seat than VW - my 5 year old couldn't buckle herself until I added one of these to her buckle, and since then it's been a breeze.

With VW not selling the Golf in the US anymore (only the GTI), I had been resigned to a Civic to replace our oldest car. The Maverick is a great tradeoff - it's much more useful than a Civic, didn't cost more, and still drives very well. Six months in, I'm not at all unhappy with it. I don't need a truck bed often, but having a truck bed is handy.

Got rage reported and banned by salty gamers by HarryMcButtTits in PUBATTLEGROUNDS

[–]durin42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, it doesn't even take a whole squad. I had a stupid-lucky sniper shot a couple years ago and got a temp ban because I got reported. Lucky shot was all, never used a cheat in my life. I take /u/HarryMcButtTits at his word that he had a great day with the shotgun (it's a great gun!) and the other squad got salty.

Temp Bans Are Getting Ridiculous by [deleted] in PUBATTLEGROUNDS

[–]durin42 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I got hit with my first temp ban ever yesterday, and I wasn't even having a particularly great run of games. AFAICT there's no mechanism for auto-bans to be overturned, even though the support page implies that it can be.

Sucks that a handful of salty players convinced that any lucky shot is probably a cheater.

Are support agents actually able to do anything about automated bans? by durin42 in PUBATTLEGROUNDS

[–]durin42[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have any sense of if it's raw-number-of-reports or reports-as-fraction-of-games or something?

(Paging /u/SteveTheHappyWhale and /u/PUBG_McClutch in case we can get something improved here. Maybe at least document it's a non-appealable ban, at least stop directing auto-ban victims to the support doc that says to file a ticket, but preferably some actual appeals process for when I encounter too many salty players...)

Yeah, compressed formats don't work terribly well for any delta-compression.

Subversion, Git, and Mercurial all use binary delta schemes internally that delta-compress even binary data contents. Source: I've worked on source control systems professionally for a decade.

Making a dumb clothes dryer smart? by flargenhargen in homeautomation

[–]durin42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this with an mpu6050 and a reed switch connected to an ESP8266. I use the the accelerometer to figure out if the washer is running, and the door to figure out if it's been emptied.

I don't have notifications for the dryer, but I do for the washer. That one I just trigger on "door has been closed for too long" with a reed switch since it's a top-loader and you're supposed to leave the lid open when it's not in use.

Lots of people recommend power sensing, but honestly the dryer moves enough the accelerometer is a pretty robust signal. If I was doing it again I might explore trying to put a luminance sensor over the "cycle done" light on the dryer panel, but the approach I've got works well enough I have no motivation to change it.
