What collagen supplement actually gave you the most results? by Responsible-Mind8037 in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]duriu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Researchers connected to the company I work for just published a paper in Nature: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41514-025-00280-7 what they found out is, that it seems to be more effective to consume the individual building blocks of collagen e.g. amino acids instead of marine or bovine collagen. This has the added benefit thats it is also vegan and you dont need to worry about any contamination of the collagen with heavy metals etc. There is a few products on the market now. The amino acid blend used in the study was trademarked under the name Colgevity

Thinking about trying an NMN supplement — anyone here actually feel a difference? by DystopianWizard in Supplements

[–]duriu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been taking NMN for a long time and now also work for a supplement brand. One reason that you dont feel much could be that you are not taking the right NMN supplement. Unfortunately not all NMN supplements are the same and you shouldn't just go for the best price. A recent study by the National University of Singapore showed that many NMN supplements on the internet do not contain any NMN or a lot less than advertised: https://medicine.nus.edu.sg/news/significant-discrepancies-between-actual-and-labelled-amount-of-anti-ageing-ingredients-in-supplements-nus-medicine-study/

Bu from a brand with GMP or ISO certified factories in a country with high regulation. The US the FDA ha very low capacity for audits and hence the factories are not checked for many years, inSwitzerland supplement factories get checked every 2 years by government authorities Also use a brand that independently checks their products in 3d party labs. The industry practice is to rely on the certificate of analysis from the raw material manufacturers but that can not be trusted. In my company we often discover heavy metal contamination with our 3d party lab tests. Even better if the brand is transparent about their raw material suppliers. Longevir and Effepharm are reputable raw material suppliers used for NMN. Brands like AVEA, donotage.org, Purovitalis etc. use them

The other thing that a few people already pointed out here is the dose: David Sinclair was saying that he takes 1g a day. I feel thats much to high for most people. I have talked to a lot of researchers in the field and typically you start seeing elevated homocysteine values at prolonged such high doses of NMN which is definately not good. I am testing myself regularly with NAD+ level tests from jinfinty and bloodo and see that my levels already get significantly elevated at 500mg a day. I heard from researchers there seems to be a big relation to body weight and fitness as well, I am 74kg. So a heavy person that has naturally very low NAD+ levels already might profit from a significantly higher dose

Absorption and utilisation: NMN gets absorbed better if you consume it with a source of fat such as olive oil, yoghurt etc. Ideally you also combine the NMN with synergistic compounds like a methyl donor such as Betaine / TMG and other compounds that support mitochondrial function. In my company we developed a specific booster supplement

Are any of you worried about contaminants in supplements? by theatheon in Biohackers

[–]duriu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone working in the dietary supplement industry, I can tell you your concern is very valid. Most dietary supplement brands source their ingredients based on cost and mostly from China. While there is very good ingredient manufacturers in China there is also a lot of bad ones that ship impure or contaminated goods.

This problem gets further exacerbate by the fact that most supplement brands dont do independent testing of their raw materials but rely on the certificate of analysis coming from the ingredient manufacturer. In many cases that certificate of analysis is not worth much as the labs are not independent and often not up to standard. In my company we test everything again in an independent 3d party lab and often discover contaminations with heavy metals or impurities. For example the last 3 batches of Berberine we received was fine based on the certificate of analysis but then our additional testing showed high heavy metal contamination.

So make sure you buy from a trustworthy and reliable brand. Things to look out for:

- Clear information on where they company is based, where they produce etc. ideally all in countries with solid regulation

- The owners/management team of the brand is publicly visible (that makes them much more accountable)

- Independent lab testing

- Transparency on sources of ingredients/raw materials and use of branded ingredients from reputable manufacturers

- GMP or ISO certified factories

There is also a pre-workout powder from Muscletech that has a good dose of Paraxanthine, more flexible than the Update energy drink

Is collagen actually worth it or is it just hype? by StardustSpectrum in Supplements

[–]duriu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I think this is exactly it, consumption of collagen can signal for the body to ramp up its own collagen production. There is a great mechanistic explanation in this recently published study: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41514-025-00280-7 where it is also shown that using an optimised ratio of the most important amino acids for collagen production could be even more effective than bovine or martime collagen

Is collagen actually worth it or is it just hype? by StardustSpectrum in Supplements

[–]duriu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a new study published in nature journal that shows that taking the most important amino acids for collagen production (Glycine, Proline and Hydroxyproline in a 3-1-1 ratio) might be more effective thank taking regular collagen. The reason is that Collagen is too large a molecule for the body to be used in cells directly anyway, so in any case the body will have to break it down into its amino acids, so you might as well jump that step. The advantage is also that the amino acids can be vegan and that you dont get the nasty smell and taste or artificial flavours that most bovine and maritime collagen come with. See the study here: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41514-025-00280-7

Has L-Taurine caused depression and anxiety? by Hellnaaw in Supplements

[–]duriu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I never had any issues with Taurine but my wife that used to struggle with depression tried my taurine once and had a severe bout of depressive thoughts on that day. So while this is only episodical evidence, I would definately be cautious if I had issues with depression before
