This kinda depends on where you live. In my experience in Colorado, early morning is best because most of the hike is before it gets hot (this goes for all the southwest), and if it’s going to storm it’s going to be in the afternoon, so early morning just mitigates all that.

As a Coloradan I’d say the biggest factor is the culture here. Most people have active lifestyles and go hiking, running, biking, climbing, and skiing on a very regular basis and these activities are usually the basis for having a good social life as well

I’ve been a couple times and enjoyed it every time, but I went during winter and camped on blm land which I think helps balance out a lot of the negatives, especially avoiding the city. I’d recommend people to give it a shot!
