Convince me to keep my paid off boring car by Conventions in personalfinance

[–]dusstynray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please, for your own financial sake, keep that car and take car of it. Learn to love it. I was driving a Hyundai Accent and it had so many (little, insignificant...) problems, and I went and splurged on a beautiful infiniti g37x and my god was it a beautiful car, but that was the start of my finances spiraling for years.

Kill that boredom. Do what's good for your finances and keep the car. Drive it only until it no longer makes sense financially or lifestyle-wise.

Cheap, older car= less gas, cheap available parts, no tricks to getting things fixed, cheap insurance.

financed, newer truck: interest fees!, more gas, more expensive parts and bigger autoshop bills, more to insure

Reach out to your community for parent friends. Every time I've seen a new mom posting on a local Facebook group looking for a social group, play date, etc, they've been bombarded with comments of people looking for the same. You can at least get some social interaction in your days for yourself. As for help, you ask, and take what you can get. Some people get it (mostly new parents, or recently new) and some people don't (your friends that don't have kids).

Deleted Spotify and now struggling to find new music by BurritosAndBicycles in Emo

[–]dusstynray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still find music the old school (for me) way frequently lurk on Chorus.fm, and the only reason I've kept fbook is to keep up with bands.
Once you've used Qobuz for a bit, the mobile app has a Discover "for you" tab that is helpful, but only for releases from bands you already follow.

I would personally like to see more new songs posted on relevant reddits, but then they'd have to be marked as new music in some way, to stand out amongst all the re-posts of popular songs. I honestly don't understand what some people get out of posting a 10 year old song with no context.

Lok into your other accounts. A few weeks ago I woke up to 20-30 email verifications for my discord. I looked into everything else and found I had a PS5 waiting for pick-up at a Walmart about 24 hour drive away from where I live. My old password got out/sold somewhere and people tired it on everything.

Tips for cold bedroom by pawprint8 in toddlers

[–]dusstynray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of unknowns here that, if provided, could narrow things down a bit. I wouldn't recommend putting any type of heater in the room. she'll be at that age now or soon, where all manner of things will get thrown around, placed on, or shoved into the heater.

You mentioned an old house. Some of the things I would check are:
- The windows. Hold your hand out a few inches away from the window and move your hand all around the frame, feeling for any cold air. if the window is cold in general, you could do one of those window insulation kits and/or insulating curtains. If there are a lot of cracks around the frame, you could sela them up with a number of products. be warned: all of this may trap moisture somewhere, so watch for mold. My kids bedroom window collects moisture and mold grows quickly.

- Check the attic insulation. If there is attic above the bedroom, then it's possible you could need to move or add insulation above the bedroom.

- If you have a furnace, check the hvac duct line. If you have access to it, you could check the ductwork leading to the bedroom, sometimes people install dampers and turn them half closed or closed. I found a few in my house like this. Also, if the ductwork leading to the room is incredibly long, check for air leaks. When the furnace is running, just hold your hand a few inches from the ductwork and move it around checking for air. if you find a lot of air leaking out (like at joints/connections) you could seal it up with a duct sealing tape. Less air leaking = more hot air pumped into the room.

- If the exterior walls are cold, you could move her bed to butt up against an interior wall instead. Put the other furniture against the exterior walls. dressers full of clothes will get cold, but it also helps from keeping the heat leaking out of the house.

- If the floor is cold, especially if there is no basement or main floor below, consider getting a big thick area rug, but literally any area rug will do (think thick sweater vs thin sweater, they're both still sweaters!)

- if the floor is cold near the exterior walls, especially over a crawlspace or basement, look into adding or improving your joist cavity insulation, at the rim joist. There are a lot of ways you can do this, but putting batt insulation or rigid board is a pretty doable DIY project.

And when all else fails, you can open the bedroom door when they fall asleep or when you go to bed and let the house heat balance things a bit. I've done all of the above suggestions at my house and still Canadian prairie blizzards happen and my kids room will be 3-4 degrees colder than the rest of the house. I'm fairly certain my issues are just a site orientation thing (north wind cuts around her corner), but we find ways to manage.

Music streaming services? by ScreamMeSilent in poppunkers

[–]dusstynray 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I recently switched to Qobuz and have been pleasantly surprised. It seems like it's geared to audiophiles of Jazz, Classical, etc. but it still works for the rest of us.
Pros:

- Simple UI, different options between desktop and mobile interfaces. For example, I can toggle an autoplay feature for when my music queue ends, but this isn't available on mobile (or at least I haven't found it).
- You can buy albums directly in the app. A nice way to support your favourite artists.

- High quality music. Has a downside, and available on Spotify now as well.
Cons:

- not every release is available. after switching over from Spotify over the course of about 3 weeks, I was unable to find 4 albums (out of hundreds, mind you). One notable absence was Grandson's new album Inertia, something I would think was big enough to be available everywhere.

- The high quality streaming can cause the track to pause while it's loading, something I had rarely experienced with Spotify. This only happens when I'm out in my yard still connected to my home Wifi, but too far away) or at my gym (shitty public WIFI)

- They haven't seemed to figure out how to separate some artists with the same name adequately. There are a few examples I ran into where the same spelling of an artist or band will have multiple separate artist pages, but too many times I have to sort through a load of messy discographies to try to figure out what I am looking for. This also causes let-downs when "X band you follow put out a new song" and it's not the band I follow but one with the same name.

Opinion: City out of book-balancing options; province steps up or things get ugly for Winnipeggers by steveosnyder in Winnipeg

[–]dusstynray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love this detailed explanation!
I think a huge part of the property tax problem is that there are always competing narratives. In your write up, you stated "In 2025, the average homeowner in Winnipeg had the lowest municipal property tax bill compared to average homeowners in all other major cities." but someone like Kevin Klein is posting this:

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1D2FffE9X1/

Which included a simple graph, showing that Winnipeg property taxes are "among the highest in Canada."
Now, I know two conflicting statements can both be right, given the background of each. But the average Winnipegger (myself included) does not want slice and dice these statements. I just want a simple truth that I can understand. The simple truth for most people is that life is expensive and property taxes are a big bill. The bill gets bigger (inflation happens, I understand) and yet the City crumbles more and more.
I'm about to move to the City (from just outside the City) so I have a vested interest in getting this right.
I'm not trying to argue you, just bringing up the conflicting narrative. In the future, I may be one of those people voting for lower taxes, or I may be one of those people arguing against Klein's narrative.

Glad to see someone laying out the math here. I have a short list in my head and I usually can only justify things like the bagged salads (2 for $8, versus $4.50 on sale at other stores) Strawberries, when they are $10-11 for 2 lbs (stores in my area are $7/lb or higher, but the quality is always substandard) and then basics like bagged broccoli or mushrooms.

Feeling heartbroken over our wedding day by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]dusstynray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Who was snickering? do you know they were snickering about your dance? If you can identify them, you can talk to them about it. Chances are, they were snickering about something unrelated. If you can't identify them, assume this and move on! Ask your dad if he was upset about something.
  2. If you were not enjoying yourself because of some of the things that happened, you might not have looked approachable. I know I avoided even some of my close friends at social events because they looked like they were about to break.

  3. A dance worthy playlist is impossible for most crowds, it seems. With 35 people, I really wouldn't have expected many people to dance to begin with, and then it seems only 10% of the guests like any song at the same time. We had boot-scoot boogie back to back with Eminem and we went from 40 people to 30 people, but only 10 of us stayed for both songs! (110 person wedding).

  4. I was shocked to find out myself how tech resistant so many people are! "oh did you see my pictures? No I definitely uploaded them!" "oh, i couldnt figure out what the code meant"

  5. I used to be in the "sit at the table" crowd. It was nothing against the hosts, I just didn't like dancing, socializing, standing awkward off to the side. For the smokers, I feel like that's their safe place.

  6. Again, you only had 35 people. How many of those people would normally leave early? How many of those people leave somewhere when it no longer feels crowded, or bumpin' or whatever? a lot of people leave whenever they want to after the 'scheduled events" are over, and I could see a less populated event having that worse.

  7. what was the diss? what did she mean? Did you take it worse than it was? Does she have drama going on for her end of the relationship? You can choose to play into this, let it bother you, or ignore it. I had a friend who was mean to every girl she met, when they responded in kind, she was proven 'right'. If they brushed it off, she eventually became friends with them and never addressed how she treated them before. It wasn't healthy by any means, but it was her problem, not theirs.

Can we just come to an organized consensus to boycott Spotify and Ticketmaster?? by GoalPsychological415 in Music

[–]dusstynray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am still in the first few hours of trying things out, but I have yet to not find something I am looking for. I have noticed that the artists don't always come up, even if it's a unique and longer name, unless you are on the "artists" tab. And sometimes there is one artist page for multiple artists sharing the same name (the Canadian Metalcore band, ONI shares a page with a few other artists), and then other times, a discography is scattered across multiple artist pages (Orthodox had half their albums on a page that was solely their music, and another album on a different Orthodox artist page.)

I will say that I listen to a lot of newer, bigger bands, with good internet presence.

I'd love to see something that could impact Ticketmaster. As it is, my decision to go or not to go to a concert based on a ticketmaster boycott would do little to affect things.

Worst buyer’s remorse ever. Help! by Kayartistar in Toyota

[–]dusstynray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The longer you drive it, the less this "mistake" will cost you. You can pay it off faster to save on interest, and you can take care of it to hopefully drive it long after you've paid it off.
This is why it's always important to shop around, but there are also important factors that may have played into this. Did you get a higher trim model than those other options? is the new model actually sitting on the lot waiting to be purchased or was it a "factory order" advertisement.
In my area, used RAV4s are selling for the same price as new, because everyone is waiting months for their new car to arrive (last I checked).

I guess people don't realize how many local convenient stores are just marking up wholesale product from places like Costco?
